Have you struggled with knowing how to square a quilt block? Watch my video to learn how easy it is to square that unruly quilt block that's too big for it's britches.
Good information and demonstration. Also if you want a quick way to find the center of the block before you put the square ruler on it, just fold in half twice and lightly pinch the fabric to make a mark at center. Then lay out on the cutting mat to square up - your center will be easy to spot.
This video is just what I needed! Your demo was so simple, concise, and informative. I am a new quilter and wanted to start out with proper techniques!
I have watched a dozen videos on how to square up a block and i have to say that this was the best one by far! Thank you thank you thank you! Now i can quilt with much more confidence.
Finally!!! a perfect explanation on how to square up blocks for me, a newbie quilter. This is gonna make my life so much easier. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I have watched many videos on squaring up a quilt block, mainly the nine patch and found none that made sense to me. This is an awesome video, thank you so much!!
Thank you so much! You used an hourglass block to square up with a large ruler--- exactly what I needed. Your video was the best I've seen. It was very easy to understand your explanation, along with your demo.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm just starting out quilting and couldn't quite visualize squaring up a block to 10" when I don't have a 10" square ruler. Now I feel confident in how to accomplish this.
I realize this was made 6 years ago, but thank you so much! This was a great, easy to follow tutorial on how to square up blocks! My hourglass came out great!
Danielle H 😂yes, I can’t believe I did this video so long ago...I’m so glad it’s still helpful and relevant even though it’s long and kind of slow. Thank you for your kind comment! I appreciate the feedback.
Love your explanation for squaring a block! I watch and rewatch your video every time I need to square up my latest blocks. I have also shared your site with many quilting friends. Thanks for the clear and accurate information.
Thank you so much for this video. I am a new quilter and was having a very difficult time squaring up the blocks. You explained this in terms I can understand. Thank you so much.
OMG, you have made my life easier. I am having so much trouble squaring things right from the get go and this should help loads. I’m teaching myself through RU-vid videos and it can be frustrating.
I'm not exactly new to quilting, but the last quilt I made where I had to square up blocks, I had a ruler that was the exact right size so I didn't have to turn the fabric. This is a great refresher for me and a good explanation. I've watched a few others that weren't specific enough. Thank you!
OMG! Good work! Spent all afternoon watching square up videos but only yours showed exactly WHERE to put the ruler and WHERE the lines are! Thank you! Couldnt figure how to do log cabin blocks as they dont have a diagonal line and only have one seamline completely across the block. By golly i think Ive got it! Kudos!😘
Fantastic description of how to square up a smaller block using a bigger ruler. As others have pointed out your video is to the point and easy to understand. Gotta go....I have to rush out and get some masking tape!
LOL I wish I saw the awhile back I'm new to this quilting also. I've found other video to show me how to square but this makes so much sense. Great video thanks.
thank you for this video, i am having a very hard time getting my stuff squared and this finally makes sense, teaching myself to quilt one youtube video at a time :-)
Thank you so much for saving my sanity. LOL. I was having trouble getting my star points on my Ohio Star to line up. I think with a little practice they will finally match. Thanks again.
I’m glad I found this video. I just yesterday made 16 hourglass blocks that I squared up to 5 1/2 inches using this exact method. Yet, when I sewed the block together some of my points did not match up. I cut everything exact and sewed all seam allowances exactly 1/4 inch. What am I doing wrong? I noticed when you cut your hourglass block you don’t cut exactly or evenly the same amount off each side. Is this why my points don’t always line up and if so, what can I do about it so that all my points line up all the time? I’ve run into this problem before and can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Thank you.
Also an easier way to find the center mark of your squares is to draw from one point to another creating an x and in the center of that x is your center point
I've been sewing since I was in high school (in the 60's), but am new to quilting. In some of the patterns I have read, the quilt block is deliberately made to say 5". Then after the block is completed, the directions say to trim the block to 4 1/2". I couldn't figure out how to trim equally on all sides and now I know why. I needed to establish a center point. Now to the point as to why I am writing. When you centered your ruler (with the tiny piece of painter's tape) it did not look like the tape was in the center of the block. It looked off center. So my question is, did you deliberately place it off center or did you place just the tip of the blue tape on the center mark? Does my question make sense? If anyone out there knows the answer to my question, please feel free to reply. Thank you.
Robin ******** I think the reason it appeared to be off of the little circle that appeared to be a center mark is because the ruler is not on the edge of the fabric - it's off the edge - so you we can trim it. The ruler is 12.5 and the middle of the 5 inch square would be 2.5 inches.
I am scared to death of making blocks because everyone says make them big enough you can square them to size. So do you add two inches to all your blocks?
She was only doing it for demonstration purposes. She probably wouldn't square it up that small in real life. If you do your stitching right you should have very minimal to cut off anyways.
This is frustrating video instruction because rather than getting quickly to your point, you continue to repeat yourself, as if you are unsure of giving your instruction.
