Hi Heidi! That was a fascinating process. I wonder what trick they used a hundred years ago before pH strips - lol. I don't use much apple cider vinegar, so can't contribute anything interesting 😐. I'm glad you were able to make use of all those apples. Our weather has been improving everyday and we just got through two atmospheric rivers, so everything has had a big drink. Now I've been able to plant out my tomatoes and peppers! I know you're settling into your indoor activities in the upside down land. Wishing you, the Mr. and Teddy a beautiful weekend!

Heya :D I think they just taste tested and used their senses haha :D It would either work or not I guess, was fun to see for my curiosity sake about the acidity. Aaah dreaming of those Spring tasks in the garden, enjoy all the growth! It's very quiet in the garden right now, although I have plenty of jobs out there to do - not much motivation with cold wet weather though! Early Winter garden walk-through video coming soon :)

Hi Heidi! I understand the slow down feeling especially heading into Winter. I imagine it takes a lot out of a person to be on many venues of social media. I was worried that you might give up YT since I feel like I have another gardening friend on the other side of the world, but please do as much as you feel comfortable. (I think I heard that YT can make one feel like they've always got to get content out for the algorythm). I love your content and enjoy seeing you go about the garden taking care of everything. Here in Seattle area we're finally getting sun and soon it will be time to put out the tomatoes and peppers! I've been planting cockscomb and yellow drumsticks in the meantime. Why do the weeds always manage to survive the winter?! lol. All the best!
@athomewiththehortons_
@athomewiththehortons_ Месяц назад
Exciting for the sunshine! ☀️ Haha yes the weeds, I have been trying to think of their benefits and uses as a positive but it’s hard to view them with a kind eye when they can be so invasive! I really enjoy the YT space I think because I’m more intentional about content and it doesn’t have that same SCROLL factor of social media. It’s also not a 24 hour flash in the pan, the effort I put in stays even if just an archive for myself ☺️ Also love the inspiration from the other side of the world as the garden slows here, there’s growth and beauty happening in other gardens.

It's so interesting seeing what's going on in your garden in the upside down - lol. We're coming out of hibernation and the seed starting is beginning! I'm looking forward to doing more flowers and trying new plants. Tomatoes will probably be started in another couple of weeks. The chickens looked happy to be let into the garden to scratch around. Hope you have a wonderful autumn and get a big ol' wheelbarrow full of pumpkins! Give Teddy a pet for me! Your friend in Seattle.

@@athomewiththehortons_ Hi again! Getting the April rain here with all the clouds. Might not see 60F until end of the month. We can't plant out our tomatoes and peppers until about May. I'm not trying anything exciting that's new, just giving a go at broccolini, some asian greens like Tatsoi, and exploring flowers like yellow drumsticks and celosia (cockscomb). Seeded carrots today. It feels so great to mess around in the soil again! Have you heard of Greenstalks? It's a tower planter. I have strawberries planted in mine. Have a great week!

Great video, going to pinch your idea of netting/shading plants with the plastic pipe. Even in uk I need to provide some form of shade for a couple of my raised beds. I don’t think there’s any greater pleasure than walking around your garden and finding a strawberry/ ripe tomato/ sugar snap pea that is ready to eat and “ grazing your way through the veggies. A tomato/ strawberry that has been warmed by the sun is one of life’s simplest of pleasure! Something that makes all the work really and truly worthwhile. Your everlasting flowers have really taken off, I’ve never managed to be successful with them. This year to try and attract plenty of pollinators I’m trying dwarf sunflowers. I usually do the large/tall varieties but the garden is very prone to wind damage and the poor sunflowers get a bit battered! Your apple tree is loaded with fruit, as were your cane fruits you must be doing something right as my mum used to say! Lovely to walk around your garden with you, it’s like visiting a friend.❤
@athomewiththehortons_
@athomewiththehortons_ 4 месяца назад
@rosemaryjasper1121 thank you so much for your kind words. I couldn’t agree more about the simple pleasure of a sunripened fruit - there’s no taste quite like it! The flowers have been my greatest success this season I think and it was all very much an experiment. I’d love to plant more sunflowers next year but we are wind-exposed here too so I love your idea of dwarf varieties! I also plan to add more tulips, daffodils and perhaps some peonies to the array next Spring to get some early colour in there too. Thanks so much for watching & taking a talk around the garden with me :-)

Hi! from rainy cold Seattle! Your garden and food forest just exploded with life! Those dahlias were massive. You've got me beat in berries and we think that the blackberry is our state weed around here. lol. I'll have to try that with the green coriander seeds. I didn't even think of that. Our last frost day is supposed to be March 17th around my region so it's exciting to begin thinking about starting some seeds. Is the grassy part of your property the front yard? Thanks for another fun video and I especially enjoyed seeing the work you do in the garden, planting and picking all the goodies. Enjoy the rest of your growing season. You have a cute pupper there! (I used to work in an animal ER).

Thanks for tuning in again for another episode & seeing the progress. Looking back at last month’s episode I was also blown away with the changes - I am so enjoying documenting the garden and seeing the changes of the seasons. Yes I was not expecting some of those dahlias to get so tall haha! 😆 Let me know what you think of the green coriander seeds for flavour 😁 The grassy part in front of our house is technically the “front yard” we look out on to yes, if I have my way even more of this will become garden one day haha, but the dog loves the lawn for romping about on with his toys! Teddy loves pottering about in the garden with me whether it’s harvesting or filming it seems, he is wonderful company. 🐶 Happy Spring planning!!!

Nice to see you have failures as well as winners. It’s also nice to see an untidy garden! That you too don’t manage to get all the weeds out! It’s satisfying to see a garden that isn’t regimented, that doesn’t have straight rows of plants and that have plants in crazy places! Do you think your apple and pear crops? ❤

Wow! Your house and garden/yard is so beautiful! Loved taking a "walk" with you around the beds and food forest. I grew strawflowers and dahlias for the first time this past summer ~ the strawflowers got very tall and the dahlias really pulled in the bees. So I'm excited for you when all your flowers really get going. It made a huge difference in my garden. You have found a really nice way to protect all your plants from bugs and critters. Can you visit with your chickens and tell us about them? I'm in Seattle and we're going into rain/snow/cold, so I have to live vicariously through you. lol.

@@athomewiththehortons_ Glad to be here too! I think the channel name looks much more professional now! I'm curious, what kinds of things grow really well in New Zealand? I'm only just beginning my gardening journey here in Oregon in the United States. It seems like yukon gold potatoes grow well here and standard things like carrots, onions, garlic, zucchini, squash, tomatoes, etc. I just wonder how different the climate is/what people tend to eat more of over there. Interesting on the comfrey - they are a purple pink hue, but will be interesting to see once my other batch flower if they’re the same - I got comfrey from two different sources in Autumn for the food forest.
