Welcome to Devon Cottage, our half-acre mini homestead in Southland, New Zealand where we're living a simple life in tune with nature.
We're on a journey to live off our land as much as possible, growing all our own vegetables, preserving food for throughout the seasons, we're establishing a fruit orchard integrated with the chicken's run and have recently started a food forest to let more wildness into our garden.
---
In this episode I share the garden mid-Autumn, with a walk around the raised bed gardens and the food forest which is looking incredibly colourful while the flowers last.

Ahh good to hear about planting your garlic inside the tunnel house only. I'm going to do that as well now as I'm a couple of weeks behind planting. Thanks Heidi. Love watching your channel x

It's so interesting seeing what's going on in your garden in the upside down - lol. We're coming out of hibernation and the seed starting is beginning! I'm looking forward to doing more flowers and trying new plants. Tomatoes will probably be started in another couple of weeks. The chickens looked happy to be let into the garden to scratch around. Hope you have a wonderful autumn and get a big ol' wheelbarrow full of pumpkins! Give Teddy a pet for me! Your friend in Seattle.

How exciting for Spring on the other side of the world! 😍👩🏻‍🌾 The chickens had a great time in the garden scratching about! They’re great friends in the garden when they’re not tearing up your vegetables. 😅 What new plants are you giving a go this year?

@@athomewiththehortons_ Hi again! Getting the April rain here with all the clouds. Might not see 60F until end of the month. We can't plant out our tomatoes and peppers until about May. I'm not trying anything exciting that's new, just giving a go at broccolini, some asian greens like Tatsoi, and exploring flowers like yellow drumsticks and celosia (cockscomb). Seeded carrots today. It feels so great to mess around in the soil again! Have you heard of Greenstalks? It's a tower planter. I have strawberries planted in mine. Have a great week!

Hi there, love your possie. What kind of raspberries are you growing, are they thornless?

Thanks Dana! So lovely to connect with you. The raspberries are an unknown - canes taken from a neighbour’s. They do have small thorns.
