This fella has done everyone a service with his rifle and optics series on the scout rifle. I appreciate his body of work put forward on the scout general field rifle.
I just found this video while thinking about buying a Ruger Gunsite Scout in 308, your setup is a lot more elaborate than I expected! Custom magwell to fit a different pattern of magazine? Damn. Why do you prefer the scout rifle concept with long eye relief scope compared to a more common scope mount closer to the eye? Is the stripper clip loading useful for you? Just subscribed btw :)
The scout scope is enough because this rifle is meant to kill big game in most circumstances from 0m-500m. The 2.5x scope with a turret provides all the capability needed to do that in most conditions. The strength of the scout rifle is that is light and mobile and provides disproportionate capability for how minimal it is.
@@aaronwilcox6417 every single one of of the spotters was a volunteer. I know they are bad and for many of them it was their first time but for a light scout rifle it wa better than nothing.
I have been meaning to research scout scopes for quite a while now. I have not found anything even close to as comprehensive and well executed as your videos sir! I can tell you have put a lot of work into these videos and I am very happy I found them! Very well done.
Good practical information . In "Jungle snafus and remedies" Cresson Kearny speaks very highly of using Permethrin as a component of mosquito control along with a double bottom hammock , mosquito head net and deet. He also speak of tightly woven cotton fabric of a quality that may no longer be available. Your comments on the pipe remind me of a book "Camp fires of the everglades" written in the 1860's , check it out . As usual a great video Don, your scout rifle vid's have been an inspiration.
@@OnTheScout I was eaten alive opening bear season in a meadow that was a part time bog. Ghillie suit kept a lot off but then they moved to my eyes. DEET makes me go numb all across my body
I know there’s lemon eucalyptus, and picadirin as alternatives to deet. In Southern Africa I’d rub basil and sage on my skin but it would only stop them for a few minutes.
Cheers for the info from australia. Ive got a ruger ranch in 223/556. Takes pmags. Just got to add a flashlight and its a sweet do it all carbine. Looking at the scout for a 308. We cant have semi autos here only "manual action".
@OnTheScout unfortunately won't happen. Aussies love to restrict other Aussies and ban anything they don't like, which is absolutely everything these days. Can't blame politics anymore when it's what people want down here. Aussies are boring, cowardly and weak mate, as they say "she's farked mate"
@@OnTheScout I haven’t, yet. And I haven’t even thought about that. So good point then. Although I would hope to find a nearby river if I accidentally fall or drop my gun in the mud.
A Ruger has an open action, but even falling into sand with a sealed up AR will result in gritty functionality. Washing of all the parts will resulting in a clean but un lubed sticky action.
Don, your video quality is amazing. It’s like you have a $1 million budget from Discovery channel behind you. Blown away by what you, alone, have done with not just information, but video quality
New to scout rifle game but with what I'm seeing it's a large variation in consistency with how torrents track or even just the large groups at 200+which is to be expected with the quality of the products I just with their was either a ffp long eye relief or one with repeatable turrets.
Good eye noticing this! The scopes were zeroed with 2-3 round groups. Most of these scopes are on cheap mounts too. Some mounts were Leupold QD so no actual torque value could be repeated. The rifle was shooting 3-4MOA M80ball ammo from 2 different lots from Lake City. Some of the scopes are new factory, some are used loaners. There’s a lot of variables that can’t be controlled with the budget at hand!
