I met Ella Jenkins about 50+ years ago. I was a very young, very inexperienced preschool teacher. My director recommended that I go to a concert at Long Beach, CA City College. It was there that I was introduced to Ella. I didn't know she was famous but I did love her music and brought a lot of it back to my classroom. Over the years I came to know and love her even more. She is one tough gal.
Played way faster than Bill Monroe could handle at this time, so he simplified his solos a great deal, sometimes playing a single note repetitively rather than the full run. Then he just played a chord for a while. Monroe was extraordinary, but he did slow down over the years.
Wow! The Khöömei of this man is just astoundingly good, his 2nd harmonic is super loud, so basically you can hear at least three notes at the same time even if you're not too used to listening to overtone singing.
Very unusual for Diola women to pay the ekonting. Which village is this lady from? And which intrepid ethnographer made the long trip and the recording? I hope he/she also visited Ekona Diatta in Mlomp.
I have watched numerous videos of “The Star-Spangled Banner” on RU-vid over the years. However, this one caught my attention. I noticed Pete Seeger added some vibrato to his speech when he recited a line from the poem about Bacchus’ wine. I count that as pure artistry, rather than an age-related problem. I guess the bobbing larynx was Pete’s signature style. Bad for technique but okay for a signature style.
I watched this at the Pacific Film Archive last night. This is a fantastic documentary. Well edited, well produced, and she is a fascinating woman. Everyone should see it.
Floyd county and Knott county descendant here. This touches and comforts my heart. I miss my ancestors and praise the Lord for the blessed time and teachings from them all. Especially my Granddaddy Abner Mack McCloud. I'll see you soon, Pappy. We'll catch up on so much.
Look for the Columbia lip from the 60!s where he is accompanied by a zither(wild) and 2 cuts of Leadbelly on piano(Eagle rock rag) one with vocal and the other with, instrumental only.
WoW At nearly 83, the vocals just sound better every time I listen to the scene, as I was there when Duffey first put his vocals out for the audience to get a taste of his style of the music that would be the greatest in urban bluegrass music, now this was back in the summer of 1957, July 4th to be exact. And he went on to group another four music.ons to bring the greatest bluegrass band to the washington D.C. area. Well they can't be replaced, so I'll just have to be greatfull that I've got a collection of the all time gteatest. I regretted not filming this myself, but enjoyed the show more sitting wide eyed on the floor with no distraction between. My regrets have subsided, thank you 💙💙💙
