This New Zealand is but a fading memory unfortunately and far from the colonist, oppression based reality of today for many people. Why do you think everyone commenting how much they miss it isnt here in NZ?
I’ve had the tune of this song stuck in my head for YEARS and I’ve just rediscovered it since primary school. We used to sing this all the time in assembly. Such a beautiful waiata.
I just found out about the existence of this aong recently. Needless to say, I was entranced. The feeling I got after listening to it for the first time is something that I haven't got before, and wouldn't get since.
The closest you guys have is The New Zealand Army Band (not to the same degree as the College Marching Band), they play all over the world and they do the opening of “Get Smart theme” with the Drum Major going through the halls of CONTROL (through the band) and gets blocked right at the end, Boogey Woogy Bugle Boys etc, all the way to Pokarekare Ana (all musicians singing unaccompanied) and the Haka. A lot of these are on RU-vid Tube. They feature a lot at The Edinburgh Tattoo.
I'm an Aussie and remember learning this song in school but with English lyrics. I live in Spain now but watch a lot of kDramas; imagine my surprise when the song turned up in multiple tv shows but with Korean lyrics. I had no idea that it was so popular in Korea. A few minutes ago, in a show called Finland Papa, a female lead character was dancing in maori style with Pokarekare Ana playing in the background.
i learned this song when i was in primary school, back in the early 70s. Still remembered the lyrics till now. A lovely song... Greetings from Singapore!
I sang this with the (on field) choir at the recent Wales V New Zealand match in Cardiff. My favourite song from a memorable day with my two daughters, Cerys and Rhian and the Abertillery Orpheus Choir.
