'Pokarekare Ana' - a beatiful love song, written by a homesick soldier, serving in the Maori Battalion during World War I - with it's tale of longing, for home & loved ones immediately touched his fellow countrymen, who adopted the haunting melody as thier own.
It's now a poignient musical touch-stone for any homesick New Zealander.

This song was written for my great aunt, Kuini Ryland, of Tokomaru Bay (Ngati Porou) and it was written as a love song by neighbouring Ngati Kahungunu chief, Paraire Tomoana, with the help of Maori politician, Sir Apirana Ngata. And yes, Paraire Tomoana was a member of the 28th Maori Battalion.

+Dale Mulligan, since you know the song that much, I have a question for you: How many English loan words are there in the text?
@ccx7004
@ccx7004 5 лет назад
+Island Gal This is like a month late haha, but here is a translation of the lyrics: They are agitated, the waters of Waiapu, But when you cross over girl, they will be calm. Oh girl, return to me, I could die of love for you. I have written my letter, I have sent my ring, so that your people can see that I am troubled. Oh girl, return to me, I could die of love for you. My love will never be dried by the sun, it will be forever moistened by my tears. Oh girl, return to me, I could die of love for you. And +Koppa Dasao, I’m no expert in Te Reo Maori, but I’m pretty sure the only loanword in this text is “ringi” which means “ring”. As far as I know, all the other words used are of Maori origin :)
@koppadasao
@koppadasao 5 лет назад
@@ccx7004 This version is missing the third stansa. Whati whati taku pene ka pau aku pepa Ko taku aroha mau tonu ana e. The fourth one is less obvious, and the only one I'm less than certain is an English loanword, but I'm still pretty sure the origin for that word is English.

I'm an Aussie and this beautiful song made me cry, because it personifies everything that is pure and lovely. It also brought back memories of when my parents and I travelled to New Zealand for a holiday, and we fell in love the country...in particular the Maori culture and music. My mother was a soprano and she won many hearts with her singing of Now is the Hour and Pokare Kare Ana... such wonderful memories for me.

This is a song from my childhood, i'm almost 70 now and Sunday dinners in Yorkshire were never complete without "Two way family favourites" a programme that connected British forces all over the world with families in UK on the radio. This song was often requested as I think English Troops had heard Kiwi troops singing it and it struck a chord. I also seem to remember a mixed language version That started off something like "Pokarakare ana means a ripple on the ocean" Though I prefer the original version. Thanks NZ for a lovely memory.

I love this song ! The melody is very popular in the south west of France, among people fond of rugby. Some new zealander soldiers transmittted this song to some Basque and Occitan choirs during WW1. Then, it began in France, an Occitan song, inditulated "Adiu e bona fortuna" (Farewell and good luck). I spend the 40 first years of my life thinking that it was an Occitan or Pyrenean song ...So, the Maori and Pyrenean song are astonishly similar...Thanks for sharing.

I saw it there too, what a great moment. NZ really is God's own country, a spectacularly beautiful place and great people. I'm Australian, and love the fact this unwrecked paradise is so close. It's clean, it's independent and it hasn't been wrecked by rampant third world immigration. They have their own distinct culture, and overall, respectfully integrated the original inhabitants. NZers - keep your independence and don't let Australia, the US or the third world overrun your beautiful home!
