Being able to read at a high level is a major achievement. There’s a difference between sounding out words in Korean and understanding the text. I don’t agree that listening is more important. They’re just as important. I find they build off of each other as well.

If you’re looking for a free resource to learn Japanese, then I suggest giving Immersive Translate a try. It’s a free browser extension that supports over 100+ languages. I personally use it to generate subtitles to my Netflix and have been using it every day. I’ve already learned a lot and am quite pleased with the progress I’m making.

Very interesting. I've been mostly focused on the AJATT approach by just watching a ton of Japanese RU-vid videos and sentence mining to learn vocabulary and kanji through Anki. I think I have too much PTSD from school to touch another textbook lol. For beginner readers I highly suggest trying to find a few copies of Corocoro Comic. It's a manga magazine aimed at grade school kids and it's great for those who are N5-N4 level readers with simpler grammar and kanji usage than Shonen manga. The beginner reading sections on Satori Reader were also pretty helpful. Those two resources helped me bridge the gap between the beginner level example sentences to intermediate level reading.

I started on Russian last month and I am also studying Quechua, but I split up my time 70/30, as Russian is the priority and harder to learn. In July, I will start Estonian. I know I shouldn't be taking on so many languages at once, especially as I am at the same level in all, basically, but I cannot resist them. They beckon me like sirens. I'm making good progress in Russian, as expected of new learners, and I'm also speaking (in my caveman way) with Russians through a langauge exchange website, so I'm hoping this will propel my Russian forward. Good luck.

I am also learning Japanese and Korean! I really suggest using the apps Write Japanese and Write Korean, and Learn Japanese: Sensei (Tae Kim’s grammar guide) for learning Hangul and kana. I also really love the app called Lingodeer for any language. It’s really great for vocabulary and grammar, you can tap on the words and it’ll tell you what it is/means which I don’t think any other learning apps do. On RU-vid I have a whole playlist for each language I’m learning, and for Japanese grammar I love TokiniAndy. He has lessons based on the Genki textbooks that have been a lifesaver for me. Korean With Miss Vicky is also fantastic.

Just so you know, for Talk to Me in Korean, the basic online lessons with audio are totally free - you can access them with the free account (at least they were last time I checked). I loved them when I was a beginner/intermediate (the first level or two of audio lessons is a bit dad-joke-filled/slow, but it gets better haha) and never had to buy anything. I will say that the beginning level or two is not my favorite in terms of how they introduce content, but I really liked them in later levels. I'm not sure if the books include audio to listen along with as well, but if not, like I said, all their lessons are online for free if you want that audio component. Also, since you already know basic Japanese grammar, I'm wondering if the pace of the first level really breaking down particles and "this, that, and that over there", stuff that also exists in Japanese, might feel a bit slow. Since you already have it, though, I'd say give it a shot. You can buy a hangeul book if you really like workbooks, but I'm sure you could learn it with RU-vid and just a piece of paper as well and save some cash. I just googled "learn hangeul free" and saw quite a few sites that looked promising. For me, this year I'm working on improving all areas of my advanced Korean, and doing my intermediate-ish Mandarin and Japanese on the side. You mentioned that you feel like you should focus on your best language the most, but for me personally I find it easier to "maintain" or slowly improve my better languages even when I don't do as much of them, whereas for fresh, newer languages where things don't click as much, spending a lot of time in them helps those new things to "click" and make sense much faster. But of course, it really just depends on your personal motivations and priorities. Best of luck on all of your goals! 😄 Happy New Year!

Ooh, I found that HSK1's textbook still had dialogue but it was a lot shorter/simpler, Chinese reader 1 will teach you lots of stuff you don't need for the exams and is more focused on daily life. So far i've been using Chinese reader since I need it for classes, and then use the HSK textbooks a couple weeks before I write the test to see what doesn't cross over to both textbooks.

I will probably try to get back into Portuguese as I have been at it for a year and have enough of a vocab.(need to nail down the grammar more though Pimsleur helped) I would like to get into and really breaking through on just default understanding while listening but that requires a lot more listening. I will likely add a tutor occasionally and language exchange to help. Besides this I have been practicing Ainu and REALLY want to become fluent in that but finding tutors for it is VERY difficult. So yeah listening input for it is a thing. I really want to nail down Japanese more and get back into it so...yeah there is too much great video game content that has never been translated and a number of other media I am into. I would like to add another Indigenous language but that would be dependent on hopefully finding native language speakers. There are a number of these languages I am interested in...Dene, Quechua(I like the sound), Salish, Mayan, etc. Maybe I should take a hint from you and take some Telugu or Hindi for a few months because there are a decent bit of people to speak to and I like Bollywood and Tollywood. Sadly I don't know if it is as easy to get books written in these scripts. Have you been using any apps. to help you? I am just curious.

Apps wise I'm really only using like flashcard based stuff - think Wanikani's third party app and Anki, or like Goodnotes for writing characters down and things like that. I know lots of people have luck with Lingodeer for Japanese as a better Duolingo alternative if that's more the path you're wanting in app form!

How much free time do you have per week usually? I work about 35-40 hours a week and am not great at sleeping, so it is wildly unoptimized. I also feel like I never have time to do things I enjoy, so I don't know how to prioritize. I probably have maybe 30 hours a week available for me at most. I have been with my boyfriend for three years, yet I still struggle with basic Finnish, his native language.

My Q1 for 2024 goals: American Sign Language - maintenance Tagalog: tested into the advanced class after one year of study 🥳, so taking that Spanish: “lazy,” slow, immersion approach, sort of as an experiment. I may abandon this 😬 Mandarin: taking a class offered by a local Taiwan-affiliated group, doing lots of immersion, and gearing up for studying it at university Fall 2024 😊

I passed HSK1 a few years ago and was studying for both HSK2 and JLPT N5 but after moving to a very rural area and finding out the testing site is an overnight trip to another state, I kind of dropped them both and began just casually studying several languages on Pimsleur (which I highly recommend). I had a casual goal for 2023 of learning Hangeul because it looks so cool and is supposed to be really easy, but I wasn't really interested in learning Korean itself. But then over the past year I REALLY got into Kpop (which kind of seems to me like a cross between a drug and a cult) and it's kind of a natural progression to learn enough to understand what they're saying. So now it's my main language goal of 2024. I want to also keep trudging along with Japanese but honestly it seems impossible to learn without a class or speaking partner or a specific goal/need. I've been putting off Mandarin for years, not sure when I'll get back into it. Meanwhile I'm going to continue to casually study a few European languages on Pimsleur as I have time.

Doubled edged sword with TTMIK textbooks. It’s a simple, easy, resource, but you’ll need the separate grammar workbook for full benefit. That’s different from the hangul workbook, I think you’re referencing in the video. Also not sure TTMIK is the best resource for preparing to go to Korea in a short period of time. The chapters are not organized like other textbooks where there is an underlying story and characters that parallel the reader as a student. It doesn’t go through the full way to introduce yourself or how to buy things or order food. But I’ve almost finished Level 1 and have really enjoyed it as my main textbook, while supplementing more thorough grammar explanations and practice with other textbooks and language videos.
