I kept thinking as i watched, " this guy is very chill." Even the dog was a bit laid back. Then the closing comment explained it. You've been hitting it hard for big game. So what a great "day off"!!! Good for you. 👊🏼👍🏼🤙🏼
@@BMCBryce thanks so much man! Poor dogs a little outta shape but he’s a good one. Fun day and many more of them ahead! Hope your fall is going awesome!
Perfect jawline, perfect dog, perfect shooting, perfect linguist, but the most of all the best pack for everyone in the universe, including He-man and Superman. You know it all. Thanks
@@borderland_upland always so grateful for ya brother! Was tickled pink to use what I learned from you and find that final bird. Couldn’t have wiped the smile off my face with 200 grit sand paper!
@@williamjohn3394 I really like it. I’ve had the normal shells before but they’re a pain to store and access, unless you spend a lot for all the bells and whistles. I can access any part of my bed, take it off when I need my truck to do “truck stuff” and it stores in the corner of my garage. Doubt I’ll ever have a hard shell again 👍🏼
I use a 28 gauge with #7 shot as well on upland birds and it works well for me too. According to Hodgdon's website data, the max charge with your components is 23 grains of Lil Gun @ 11,700 psi. Your tested load is quite a bit higher; something to consider. BTW, my brother recently got one of your vests and has been using it and likes it a lot. I tried it on and got to say the lumbar pad in the back feels really nice. I may have to swap with him and give it a try.
@@DougSchoenung appreciate the comment! The test report shared with me, was right at 12200 if I recall exactly. I haven’t had any pressure signs of any sort yet but always thankful for folks ensuring safety! Definitely goes bang with a lighter powder load for sure! Thankful for the kind words on the vest as well! Hope he’s a good brother and lets ya try it out! 🇺🇸
I shot 12ga vs 20ga in identical guns, identical ammo mfg, over 400 shots each of two chukar seasons. For me, a 12ga 1 1/4 load vs 20ga 1oz is 27.1% more effective at knocking down birds full stop. Yep, that’s not exact science, but it lines up with the findings and advice I’ve gotten from multiple life long upland hunters. A semi auto 12 is the unequivocal king when it comes to actually killing things. Like you said, taste and situation (lightweight gun, well trained dogs to get cripples, preference for hard recoiling doubles) means compromises can be worth it for 20 and 28. You can get 12ga gas semis that recoil less than a 20ga double, carry 5-6 shells (where legal), don’t make you cry when you inevitably drop them, and (most importantly) have adjustable stock fit to dial it in perfect. And several weigh at or less that 6.5lbs. Just another opinion for the newbies out there. Absolutely love the Final Rise gear and the videos you’re putting out!
@@CandidZulu nothing wrong with a 12, just doesn’t quite check the boxes for my personal preferences. I always say, “its the Indian, not the arrow that makes a difference” 👊🏼
Hey Matt, does your super light have a 28” barrel? I’m shooting the super light feather 20g and could only get it in 26”. Looks like that’s all they make…at least the new ones. Absolutely love the gun, easily my favorite as well…but wish it was 28”. I’m curious if you replaced the stock 26” and if so where to find a replacement barrel. I’ve even looked for older models hoping for longer barrel with the english stock, but all I can find is the upland special with a 24” 🤯
@@jimmyg3502 hey brother - it does. It took me several years of looking before I found one. This is an early 90s shotgun but it’s rare to find the super light with 28” barrels anymore. Occasionally browning will do their shot show specials and they’ll offer 28” barrels. I scored a 16 and 28 gauge super light feather and both have 28” barrels. I’ll keep my eyes peeled and let you know if I come across another 👍🏼
@@finalrisethanks for the reply! Yes, please let me know if you stumble across anything! Eventually I will probably order a custom Upland gun co. but for now I’ve still got a nostalgic addiction to Brownings ever since watching my grandpa knock down pheasant and quail with his sweet 16 at a rate that seemed superhuman to me 30 years ago 🥰 BTW, loving my Summit vest. Keep up the good work!
I popped an honest 15 birds out of cover during archery elk in one day. Maybe 3 days before the season opened, lol. I was going to go out this weekend but I realized it's deer opener here in the ol UT, don't feel like finding my dog with a hole in his orange vest. Looking forward to chukar too. I wound up carrying my dog a lot last year, was the pricker situation worse in the desert than normal or was I just making bad choices? great point about the water, surprising amount if it around the mountains here but you have to plan ahead.
Nice presentation, you said it all very well. As a 65 year upland hunter, I shoot 20 & 28 both about 61/4 lbs and prefer a 28 inch barrels on the 20ga and 30 inch on the 28ga. I have shot in America and always take my 20ga as the best all round field gun. I shoot upland at home in NZ, May to August and then come to America for a couple of weeks over Cristmas. Enjoyed your page. Cheers, David
I use a Browning 725 Feather 12 gauge weighing 6 pounds and 7 ounces. 26 inch barrels with Trulock ported blackened stainless steel extended chokes in Improved Cylinder and Improved Modified as my All Around shotgun.
You're a Strong Person , wise beyond your years ! Thanks for this soul sharing , very cool video . Living a great lifestyle by choice ...Love it ... yes a little envious ...
@@christopherhevener3661 this particular load didn’t come from a manual and was tested by a good friend and given to me. Certain places will test loads and get you load pressure, speed, etc. kinda cool! A really good reloading manual for the 28 and .410 is the “small bore” manual from ballistic products. There’s some great reloading Facebook groups as well 👍🏼
I envy you being able to hunt the Northwest consistently. Being from Ohio, not much upland hunting in my state, but to make the time to do some pheasant hunting in NW Ohio, it is a passion of mine. Very good videos young man, lots of good knowledge you're sharing.
@@MichaelJones-tu9gi grateful for the kind words sir! Definitely very very blessed to be where I am and enjoy the incredible opportunities to hunt, fish and recreate to my hearts desire. Appreciate you taking time to watch and comment as well 🤝🏼
Nice video! I shoot a csmc 20 gauge over/under with 28” barrels. It weighs 6 1/4 lbs and balances perfectly on the hinge pin. Its the only shotgun I really shoot anymore. And I removed the front red bead which I agree is distracting.
@@jblocker6613 I’ll own a csmc one of these days! I’ve looked time and time again.. figure I just need to do it. Heard nothing but great stuff. And American made!! 🇺🇸
Great video. I would really like some advice on left handed guns. I’m 55 and just getting into the game. My dad gave me a browning bps 12 gauge. Is love a 20 over under and damn. It’s hard to source. Sure would like to find something and get to practicing it so I can get out there. Thanks. Again, great video. I learned more in that 21 minutes than I have in piecing together dozens of others 👍🏼
@@shanemilehi grateful it was helpful! A lot of OUs are built fairly negative in their cast so they fit just great for LH shooters. Pumps like the BPS, Ithaca and a few others are bottom eject which makes them a great option as well. Lots of solid options but hopefully some other south paws chime in with some good first hand experience to help you further 🤝🏼
I just picked up my first double barrel yesterday for grouse! Ended up getting a cz bobwhite 20 gauge. It's my first double gun, and I wanted one that worked well but also wouldn't be upset scratching. Thr upland company guns look really good. Maybe in the future.
I also am rethinking my 12 ga O/U and 12 ga in General. I always thought that 20 did not have the reach but with new loads and technology I may want to lighten up what I carry.
@@cartergjenkins you hit the nail on the head brother. Modern shotshells are pretty dang amazing and a little time at the range, spent practicing and patterning the gun to get the right shot and choke combo, goes a long ways to putting more birds in the vest.
Great video! I prefer 16ga for Upland - but I have to reload since shells are hard to find. 16 carries like a 20, shoots likes a 12. My back up is a 20ga because you can always find shells anywhere in the US. All of my guns are double guns and when I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll shoot a side-by-side over my English Setters in the piney woods of Georgia for Bobwhites - great way to spend a crisp fall day!
Great video. My son and I were talking about some of the things you just covered in your discussion. He has gotten into Upland and waterfall hunting in the last year or so and the points you cover are excellent. He’s in the process of evaluating what he wants in his next shotgun, the second one, and I think this would be extremely helpful for him so I’ve passed it along. Definitely a thumbs up and I’m subscribing to your channel.
Great guns Matt and though I am on O/U guy, I have thought about getting a SxS and likely from Upland Gun. No plug for Final Rise? Ok I will do so for you. I have 2 Final Rise vest systems and several accessories and they are awesome. Matt and his team are second to none when it comes to customer service and the thought that goes into the vests are incredible. My wife and I can wear them all day hunting and never feel like we did so at the end of the day. Much appreciation for what you do for the Upland Community as well.
@@jimbragg8909 you’re too kind brother! Couldn’t do what we love without amazing folks like you two. Means the world and can’t wait for all the good final rise and our community will accomplish together!
Great video thanks for sharing! I own two side by sides 12G, a Baikal prince of wales grip 28" and a 110 year old BSA straight grip 30". Both used for primarily chukar here in Europe!
There you go again with the "I own more shotguns than I should!" Currently own 2 Remington 20ga 1100's. One Sporting Field I use for skeet. The second is a 20-LT Upland Special for field use. Love both of them!
