I phoned up a Bonham-Carter in the local phone book in about '87 and said "Is Helena there?" but then bottled it.🙂

James Wilby is not only drop dead gorgeous but an incredible talented actor. He's got such presence on screen that is rarely seen these days. The fact that this is his first major role is astounding. He act so natural and his Marurice is so believable that I forget that I'm watching an actor.James Wilby is truly a class act, well deserved award for his role

I agree with all the deleted scenes they really didn't add much to the storyline. But I do agree with Kit Harvey when he said what a miracle they found James Wilby. A miracle indeed! Not only he's drop dead gorgeous, he's an incredibly good actor. The fact that this was his first major role in film just astonishing. He's got incredible presence on screen,totally draws you in the role. Amazing. I can't image anyone else playing Marurice, he's perfect.

James Wilby is the most beautiful and gorgeous man I have ever seen. Brilliant performance as he takes us through Marurice journey to self discovery. The fact that this was his first major role in film just as astonishing. So much class and presence on screen, he speaks beautifully as if he was reciting Shakespeare. A well deserved award for his role in Marurice

Beautiful movie, James Wilby's brilliant performance takes us through Maurice self discovery journey. After Clive's rejection when it really all begins and one feels his pain and loneliness as he goes through it all. Then he finds love,and even though he triumphs,one cannot help feeling immense sadness and sorrow for Clive who (it's obvious) loved,loves still and probably will always love Maurice now left with this emptiness and full of regrets that comes through strongly at the end of the movie. Therefore I could not feel that complete happy ending which was the whole point of the story

Aziz was portrayed as a buffoon in this movie version, I didn’t find it believable that Adela would be beguiled by him.

Such a quiet subtle film about revolution. James Wilby is astonishing, the way he carries us with him from bland unconsciousness to the heights & depths of Maurice's heart. I saw 'Maurice' shortly after it came out (😉) & I just remember thinking I was alive at exactly the right time, that the world & I were going to have the most exciting & passionate conversations together. I wasn't wrong.

Okay, now I need an extended version of the movie. I understand that they couldn't put all the book scenes, but I feel that many of them help us clarify or darken the characters. Like Maurice's mistake in becoming interested in Dickie or Maurice's masterful speech, although what hurts me most was that they removed the speech and the way he fades from Clive's eyes to join his love. It is a very strong scene in the book that makes clear the evolution and rebirth of Maurice. :(

This was a wonderful soundtrack to an incredible movie. And we never hear a full orchestra any more, just keyboards attempting to imitate the sounds of strings, etc. I appreciate how Mr. Jarre was able to take his theme and arrange it in such a way to make it be a Western piece of high symphonic music and than to take small pieces of the theme and make them reflect the Eastern fabric in the soundtrack. He did much with the material. The movie was beautiful. And most of the critids were incorrect on their initial responses.

Clive had self hatred due to his bad relationship with his mother, unlike Maurice who was fawned over and well loved by his family. Perhaps that's why they had such a different attitude towards their relationship, with Maurice embracing it with passion and Clive feeling threatened by it and distancing himself from it.

Having just watched 'A Room with a View', I then went straight for this great work of 'Howard's End' as well. A film that one can never tire of. I'm afraid it's an era of great film making that is long gone. 'A Passage to India', 'Shadowlands', 'The Sting', 'Out of Africa' etc. have faded away. The only great exceptions would be some different films, yet quite watchable in 'A River Runs Through It', 'Legends of the Fall', 'Gladiator', 'Braveheart', 'Michael Clayton', 'Syriana', 'Spy Game' and a few others. For the longest time, I have not been able to say that a movie was truly great and excellently cast. Despite all of the money that James's Cameron ploughed into 'Avatar' and 'Titanic', they were only entertainment and hardly what I would view as great. I have a very eclectic taste in films and can easily enjoy a nicely made film for entertainment reasons, romance, get one thinking or simply to occupy some time. I cannot for the life of me understand why all the current screenwriters of today do is to continue re-make after re-make and ridiculous comic book movies. I could write a better film myself and I gather many other commentators could as well. Everything is all about CGI and the ability to truly act doesn't even matter anymore. We need to continue to appreciate not only the great films, yet the great actors who made them this way. I look back at the films I grew to love in my homeland of Australia of 'Gallipoli', 'The Man From Snowy River', 'The Lighthorsemen', 'The Year of Living Dangerously', 'All the River's Run', 'Breaker Morant', 'Mad Max', 'A Town Like Alice' and a few new films in 'Danger Close', 'William Kelly's War', 'The Water Diviner', 'The Dressmaker' and 'Red Dog'. Australia has become known as a great place to make movies, yet hasn't produced anything of real substance for quite sometime. Just as video killed the radio star, the greed of Hollywood has lead to the demise of any real films. At least technology has given us the chance to re-live the greats whenever we choose. At least we can be grateful for that.🇦🇺💖👩🏼‍🎨

This TV adaptation: 6.5/10, and I’m being generous. David Lean’s 1984 movie adaptation: 9.0/10 The key problem with Lean’s version is that it does not show correctly the magnitude of British oppression in India, and India’s discontent with the British.

And George mastered playing Indian citar himself... It cost him his marriage taking so much time to practice 😢
@genny9026
@genny9026 3 месяца назад
That’s not what cost him his marriage. He had many affairs, including one with Ringo’s first wife Maureen when Ringo and Maureen were still married. Eventually, George’s first wife Patti Boyd left him for Eric Clapton. It was Patti, who had suggested that they all go to see the Maharishi. She and her sister had already been to some classes in London. After that, George became interested in Indian music and learned to play the sitar. The time he spent doing that, wasn’t the problem.
