Easier to state where E. M. Forster is historically than in my heart. Being very wealthy very early (all inherited) probably allowed him to do as-he-pleased and live a life based on whim. Certainly touched by genius if an uneven genius. Interesting to note that Alan Bennett reports that his sex life was far more adventurous and indulgent than his man-in-a-raincoat image suggests. I am guessing this is based on inside knowledge of the (then illegal) gay scene rather than AB's imagination - which sadly a lot of his "facts" seem to come from.
