I was the Captain. We have a hydrophone on board but it was not deployed at the time. This was unexpected - i just managed to get my phone out and film.
Thanks! Did the boat you were on have a hydrophone down? Do you think the captain, naturalist(s), or other tourists were able to record the underwater sounds at the time? Or can you recall what sort of sounds were made, particularly as the salmon and pursuing orca swam past the boat?
@scottveirs ya it's a recording from another time and place. There was no audio on my phone for some reason so I quickly added that for fun. Good observation.
Is this audio from a hydrophone deployed from the boat during the salmon pursuit, or is it a recording of Southern Resident vocalizations and buzz trains from some other time/place? I ask in part because I don't hear the sort of echolocation patterns I would expect during a predation event...
brings back great vacation memories, I saw a pod off this island when I was in Victoria Canada, they took us back towards the states they were chasing salmon there, wonder if they were the same ones? We didnt get that close to them and the brochure shows up close pics, that was a little disappointing they said it was the law.
