August 7th, 2013 (Iphone footage) - A Southern Resident L Pod male slowly stalks a salmon on a rough and foggy day off San Juan Island. This was the first time a Southern Resident had been seen in quite some time. They appeared from out of the fog and were actively pursuing the many chinook salmon in the area.

Thanks, Scott. I should have mentioned that. I keep both on my desktop at all times.

To find the live-streaming sites just Google orcasound.

@scottveirs ya it's a recording from another time and place. There was no audio on my phone for some reason so I quickly added that for fun. Good observation.

I was the Captain. We have a hydrophone on board but it was not deployed at the time. This was unexpected - i just managed to get my phone out and film.

brings back great vacation memories, I saw a pod off this island when I was in Victoria Canada, they took us back towards the states they were chasing salmon there, wonder if they were the same ones? We didnt get that close to them and the brochure shows up close pics, that was a little disappointing they said it was the law.

Thanks! Did the boat you were on have a hydrophone down? Do you think the captain, naturalist(s), or other tourists were able to record the underwater sounds at the time? Or can you recall what sort of sounds were made, particularly as the salmon and pursuing orca swam past the boat?

You can listen to them online when they come past San Juan Island. We have two hydrophones offshore.

Is this audio from a hydrophone deployed from the boat during the salmon pursuit, or is it a recording of Southern Resident vocalizations and buzz trains from some other time/place? I ask in part because I don't hear the sort of echolocation patterns I would expect during a predation event...

They need as many salmon as they can get, now. I'm deeply worried about the SR Orcas.
