Tobacco Road Relics is a channel devoted to preserving and learning about history, primarily through our metal detecting finds. It all began back in 2018 as Davie County Diggers, in a small community in Central North Carolina. Over the years we began to focus more of our attention towards Civil War Metal Detecting, so we wanted a name that more accurately reflected where we dug and who we are. Since we primarily hunt in North Carolina and Virginia, also known as the Tobacco Road, we thought it was the perfect fit and the rebrand from Davie County Diggers to Tobacco Road Relics was complete in February of 2024. We want to welcome you to the channel, and also encourage you to find us on Facebook at our Tobacco Road Relics group!
Great video Chris! Love the Rhode Island button! Mason and I finally just dug our first Eagle Infantry button on Monday in a hay field in New Hampshire. Looking forward to you making some new content when the cooler weather comes, but until then i will watch some retro Davey County Diggers vids! Hope you are having a great summer my friend!
Anybody out there? Anyone home at TRR? Have you guys taken up golf instead? This is fan abuse. 🤪 Hope all is ok. Maybe BOTH of you guys finally got stuck in the mud somewhere?????
Forget about these cleaning methods and get yourself some Oxyclean detergent powder. Simply mix the powder with some hot water, shake it up a bit to make it foam, then drop your bullets in and walk away. ( if it’s a cavity-base bullet and the cavity is packed with dirt, use something to scrape the dirt out of the cavity first.) Come back 30 minutes later, rinse the bullets under some warm water, and they will come out snowy white. No scrubbing or brushing required. For brass buttons, belt plates, breast plates and copper coins, DO NOT put any liquid on them, not even water. Take a toothpick or bamboo skewer and start gently rubbing the relic with the end of the skewer in a back-and-forth or circular motion. Sometimes you can even “pick” the crust off a little at a time first. As you are rubbing the artifact, the powdered dirt will actually act as a polish and give the artifact a nice, glowing patina. I ruined the patina on many a button and coin before by putting it in water, ammonia, and other liquid cleaners. The only exception is when you have a button that is heavily gilted and you want to bring out the gilt. Then and only then will I mix ammonia and water 50/50 and let the button soak, checking it early and often. If you see a bluish haze around the artifact, it means the ammonia is working. Periodically use a small, soft brush (baby’s toothbrush is perfect) dipped in the mix to gently brush the button and bring out the gilt.If you don’t see a bluish haze after about 5 minutes, then there is not enough gilt left on the button to preserve. Take it out immediately and soak it in plain water to remove the ammonia. Ammonia will “burn” brass that is not gilted. Just wanted to pass along some of the things I’ve learned after 40 years of relic hunting….
That was my initial thought as well. I tried my best to make sound through it but just couldn’t. I sure do think it’s a cool piece though. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment. We really appreciate it!
I don’t disagree with that- but this is a very very late war site. I could be wrong but I really don’t think there were many smooth bore muskets still being used that late in the war. Who knows- I could be off base. We sure appreciate you watching man! Thanks
Hey Guy's, love the hunt! Congrat's on the Largies! "A" button is really nice, but hard to beat the coins (all of them, even the clad QT 🤣) I want a bullet, but if I win, you can send the winning bullet to a boy or girl of your choice so they can learn and enjoy history! Keep up the great work and keep saving that history!
Man, you guys had a great hunt! Nice job on the old coppers, Indians and Largies! Nice pile of lead too! What a great episode! Congratulations guys! We are always so jealous of all that Civil War history! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much Cliff! I wish we were on those Confederate buttons like you are- but ain’t nobody else in the digging community as hot on those Reb buttons as you my friend! Thanks so much for watching. We really appreciate it buddy
That’s so cool of you to say!! Thank you!! We want someone who is watching out videos to feel like they’re out with their buds on the hunt with us. I wish the wind hadn’t been so bad on some of the clips but that’s outdoor filming for you. We really appreciate your support!
Great hunt fellas!! And what a nice variety of finds! I love hunts like those; they are few and far between! I’d have to go with the Eagle artillery button as my favorite find of the day, but any of that stuff I’d be stoked to dig! Keep up the great content fellas!
Presented by Chris and Travis aka “The Slop Searchers” 🤪 Man, you guys are always in the wet muddy ground. Congrats on the recoveries guys, and putting up with that weather for our entertainment. What headphones were you using that stopped working? Thanks, Doug in NC
I like the way you and Travis changed it up and we get to see both of you speaking and showing your finds. Probably gives you more time to detect too. 👍
My favorite find for the day was the clad quarter. Modern clad is a bugger. I want a bullet. Good variety makes an enjoyable hunt and vid. Thanks gents for sharing.
Thanks buddy! Nice to know someone watches all the way! You are entered!!!! And yes…..I thought a clad quarter was a copper cable! Hahaha I’m so embarrassed
Hello Chris & Travis :) Nice mix of finds guys, bullets are cool, but I like finding other relics too, the coppers are great guys congrats. Thats a pile of flats too either one of them could have been a Militia button but got a killer "A" out of there ! Good mix of IHP's as well to rap it up :) Best of luck next time out. ATB - David & Daniel
David it’s so nice to hear from you! Thank you my friend! I saw that you have a new video out as well! I can’t wait to watch it tonight my friend. Thank you!
At the moment we just have hats Howard. We have the orange/camo like you saw in the video, gray, black and khaki. I have some good photos of all of them in our FaceBook group. Let me know if you’re interested. But to answer your question- we ARE going to have T shirts and sweatshirts made- just hasn’t happened yet. I expect that to be finalized very soon though
Great video! Huge amount of Civil War history dug! Love that you guys were out there in the pouring rain! We have had some days where the digging was so good we just stuck it out and got soaked! Great wrap up and love the tokens your friend gave you those are cool! Happy Hunting my friend!
Another awesome video and hunt y’all pretty much tore it up in lead and bullets bet there’s allot more still in the ground hunted out never!! Congrats on the finds!!
Thanks man! We are trying some new things and just this week purchased a GoPro for myself to give some different views as well. Thanks for that feedback and watching!
