The Prussian Royal Family were not particularly renowned for their intellectual abilities. However, his mother was particularly intelligent. She took after the Coburg family. After she and her husband, then Crown Prince of Prussia, visited Pope Pius IX, the Pope wrote in his Journal “I am an old man and have met many people in my life - no one has ever impressed me so much, in terms of intellectual ability, as the Crown Princess of Prussia”. Had her husband lived, Germany would have proceeded in an entirely different direction. Unfortunately, William II, while intelligent, was too much obsessed with Prussian militarism and that was, eventually, his undoing. However, had he been at the centre of political affairs in the years leading up to the outbreak of the Great War, it would probably never have happened. He fully appreciated that going to war with Russia could only end disastrously - he had the example of Napoleon to consider. In 1908, he was very much affected by the Prince Zu Eulenburg scandal. He and the Prince had been very close friends and he relied upon him for emotional support. The Prince was also a political genius and the completion of the process of the unification of Germany was very much because of his diplomatic efforts with the smaller German states. After the scandal, the Kaiser was advised that he must never communicate with the Prince again and he had a sort of nervous breakdown as a result, which caused him to retire almost entirely from any active involvement in political affairs. He did make it clear to the Chancellor, Von Bethmann-Holweg, that he did not want war. However, the Chancellor had very little influence over the Generals, who had already decided that it was time for war. After the outbreak of war, the Generals demanded that the Kaiser take a back seat. He could present medals, but that was about all.
One only has to see Tsaritsa Alexandra's visage, to discern that she was ill at ease with people and frightened of the real Old Russia, beyond Tsarskoye Selo and Gatchina. She should have stayed in Hesse - Darmstadt and the Tsar should have married a more resolute Russian noble woman from the Obolensky - Dolgoruky, Galitzine or Mirsky families etc al.Tsardom failed the social and economic aspirations of rural and liberal and middle class Imperial Russia, a fatal mistake with industrialisation creeping onto an immovable Tsarist autocracy with a top - heavy Okhrana secret police.

So raise a glass to Jason Morris, In Austria, where fortune pours. For in the spirit of the land, He holds her blessings in his hand.
Also the bombs targeted the Industrial Areas of Vienna more than the center parts, so in the green Prater and the 1st district where never as much bombs droped as in the 23rd or 11th districts...
Each generation thinks there was a golden age in the past, these people probably had theirs in the 1814-15 after the Congress of Vienna, when Austria was at its peak. Btw. most people lived in poverty in 1900s (relatively to today's standard) ... not so golden for them.
@@NerickovaNoha Hahaha, I know this, don't take it so serious. But as always, the facts are between the middle-class fairy tales of the "golden age" and the leftist fairy tales of the social hell. Because the situation in Vienna in these times was like in all big cities around the world. May be in hundred and fifty years the people will tell similar fairy tales about our time. Only one thing will be different and there it was a real golden age in these old times, this was the culture. There came people with extraordinary minds and intellects together and produced culture which are influencing the world till today. These is absolutely not in today's Vienna - in this way, we are now only a better provincial city...

My favorite thing about this is the recording is the band from University of Pennsylvania, because the former state song of Pennsylvania, "Hail, Pennsylvania" uses the same tune as the former imperial anthem of so many of our Russian Orthodox brethren once sang.
