I don't Kenneth, with work and kids my fishing days are too precious. I would recommend Larry McCarty if you are looking for a world class guide...Google Corrib View Lodge...
I used to fish with Dad and brothers on Corrib for the Mayfly for 30 years. Sadly, Dad died in February from dementia. We had our last trip with him in 2018, mind you his mind was somewhere else but he could still cast a lovely line. This video really captured what Corrib is, heaven. Will be back next year with my brothers, please God. Tight lines
Any tips on fishing this lake for the first time? Maybe fishing from oughterard when the travel restrictions are lifted but don’t know if ghillie services would be running yet
All the gillies are back working I think Olly, if you are around Oughterard give Kevin Molloy a shout....one of the best gillies that side of the lake...tight lines.
No, what with job, kids....etc, time on the water is too short and precious. If you go onto the fisheries website there are plenty of folk out there who teach...should give it a go....thanks.
Not one serious counter argument so far, only sarcasm, insult and religious innuendo. In other words, the usual response of those who have no case. True fishermen would have done a bit better than that.
You are free to have your own point of view. An angler has the right to keep his legal bag limit should he chose. I used to keep fish but for years have mostly released especially in wild fisheries. I fish now to simply see the fish up close and because I love the places where wild trout live. Most released fish can survive if handled properly and brought to net quickly but nothing can bring back a trout in the creel. Catch and release helps maintain wild stocks and gives the fish another chance at reproduction. Each angler makes his own choice and Gary O'Brien is as entitled to his the same as you are to yours.
As a dedicated fly fisherman, I am getting more and more uneasy at these videos showing fish in what is to them their death struggles. Surely the magic of the sport is that we CAN'T see through most loch water. Also, this catch and release is out of control. By all means release the thing if i'ts undersize or the wrong species. But to go intending to release, having made quarry fight for life as long as possible, then go without oxygen for a bloody selfie? I think we're losing sight of the spirit of game fishing.
You're right, I am absolutly ashamed of myself and will now sell all my fishing gear and take up darts....really appreciate you helping me see the light...god bless you and tight lines.
Richard Bartley got it in Halford, it's the 115 version camping battery. Got it on sale for 99euro a few yrs back. Great battery, can get most of the morning out of it...
Wonderful fishing, Sir. I'm back home next May and June and I'm spending two weeks on Corrib. One for the Mayfly and then one for the Caenis. Can you suggest a dry fly rod(s) for both hatches. I'd like to follow suit with what you use. They seem like nice casting rods with decent back bone, also what lines do you use in conjunction with these rods?
Hi Gary, that's some amazing fishing and brilliant footage! I have a couple of questions about those caenis feeders that you might be able to shed some light on... I don't have a boat but do a bit of float tubing around the Mask/Corrib area which means I'm pretty restricted in terms ability to move over any substantial distances on the water. Do you tend to travel long distances to find fish or are particular types of water consistently productive? Also, on those mill-pond days, what sort of leader and tippet setup can you get away with? I presume tippet must be something like 2lbs or less and well degreased with a fairly long leader? Thanks for any advice and totally understand if this isn't the place to be sharing hard earned knowledge!
Salmonids the caenis will hatch in most bays on Corris in june, you need to be out on the water bout 5am. It would be tuf in a float tube, I tend to follow fish and move onto fish I can see, it's all about setting your position to intercept fish. I fish a 9 food tapered leader down to 5lb, a 1.5mm riverge ring and 3lb froghair fluro. .. I use the rushes when it's a bit windy, can be good crac...
Gary OBrien thanks for the info! I’ll definitely be giving it a shot this June and will see if I can manage to get the tube in front of a few fish. By the way do you know if Mask gets much caenis?
Hi Fergus, I use a size 18 hook Kamasan B405, couple of fibers for a tail, micro dub body and a small tuft of CDC tied spent. The whole fly is very small, light grey and olive green work best. The fly is important but presentation, leader and knowing where to drop the fly probably plays a bigger part. Very satisfying when you get it right...
