Depends on the university, some have no pre-requisite subjects, some do. Chemistry and English seem to be the most common ones. In terms of what is somewhat related, obviously biology and chemistry are to some extent but really you just need to do the subjects you like and that you are most likely to do well in. I’m not sure what you mean with the second part of your question regarding how long it would take. Med school takes 5-6 years for undergraduate programs or 4 years for postgraduate programs (in addition to whatever undergraduate degree you’ve done).

@kjmd
@kjmd 10 месяцев назад
No worries, glad it was of assistance! Yes, you do get paid from internship and beyond. As someone without any other dependents or any debts outside of HECS, it's more than enough to survive in Australia and have some left over to save/invest/enjoy certain luxuries in life like travel. You certainly get paid better than in some other countries like the UK. This is a link to the NSW Health Professional EBA which is publicly available data (www.health.nsw.gov.au/careers/conditions/Awards/he-profmed-salaries.pdf). It includes what the income of an intern and subsequent level doctor is and also the incomes of other health professionals. Different states pay their doctors differently and NSW is one of the lowest paying states.

Hey, thanks for this video! I’m currently a second year med student and have been killing for a simple explanation on this all - just a few questions, 1) do you know how competitive a sports medicine physician is (not surgical) and how job opportunities for that look like in the city? 2) Also, do you know about the lifestyle for it? I’ve been feeling demotivated since hearing about how gruelling training will be in the future (which I had no idea about when entering med school) - I’m looking for a solid lifestyle and don’t want to spend all my twenties working night shifts / studying, but all I’ve been hearing so far from everyone is that I’ve chosen the wrong profession for lifestyle haha - 3) do you have any insight about maintaining a lifestyle during the training years post-med school? Thanks!
@kjmd
@kjmd Год назад
Hey, thanks for leaving a comment and sorry about the delay in responding. 1) I need to preface this answer by saying I don't really know a lot about the Sports Med pathway. From what I do think I know, becoming a sports medicine physician is quite difficult as there isn't many jobs around and often sports med physicians have to do other things (e.g. locum in ED) to make a full-time living. Check out SEMSA for more info (facebook.com/SEMSA.au/) 2) Again, not too sure about the lifestyle of a sports medicine physician but I would assume it would have less nights since not much sport happens overnight. Again, would recommend the above FB group which is the med students association related to sports medicine. 3) It is hard, especially at the start, because work is a different pace to being in med school and very draining and don't be surprised if you can't do a lot of the same things that you could previously just because you're so tired by the end of the day. I think give yourself some slack, acknowledge that some rotations are busier than others and some days you just can't exercise / do other self-care things because there's not enough hours in the day to do them + work + sleep (esp if you have to do 14+ hour days which happens sometimes). Trying to get a good schedule/routine going is probably your best friend as there's just less hours in the day once you start work and thus you have to be more "productive" if you want to get the same amount of things done. Also, you can consider job-sharing (i.e. working part-time) - yes this delays progression, but if it allows you to be happier throughout the journey, then that's defs worth it. In saying that, it's incredibly hard to do because you feel the constant pressure of wanting to keep up with everyone else around you who's working full-time. That's kind've all I can say off the top of my head, maybe I'll make an entire video on this last point, so thanks for leaving a comment!

Hi:) Just wanted to clarify, you mentioned while you have the option of applying to multiple states that you would lose any other potential offers once you accept another one. I had a friend who accepted their offer in NSW and then received an offer from queensland later in the year and rejected the first one and accepted the queensland offer. I was planning to do something similar to this but do you mind please clarifying if you lose all your other offers once you accept an offer??
@kjmd
@kjmd Год назад
Sorry about the delay in responding, internship has been busier than anticipated! My understanding from graduating in 2022 was that because they had moved to a centralised system, the health systems from different states were aware if you had accepted an offer from interstate and so would not give you an offer in their state. I believe that in the past, it was possible to accept an offer in one state and then receive an offer in another (e.g. my sister received an offer in QLD which she accepted and then was offered a position in NSW) but from what I know, they've phased this out. Hope that helps!

Woahhh.. sorry this is my second comment on one of your videos but I need NEED to warn you about these thoughts.. Med school is a school. Not everyone comes with a passion for studying, not everyone comes with speaking skills and, even if some come to become doctors, halfway though several of them start pivoting yet end of getting the degree. Again, this is a school. It is meant to cultivate your skills and build new skills. I was fairly a lone wolf in some parts of undergrad, but med school taught me to expand my comfort zone and now I'm a tutor. I don't always like studying, but I've become accustomed to it as busy work. No way I was able to study 10 hours a day before med school. MED SCHOOL TAUGHT ME HOW TO STUDY. And did I come with a passion to become a doc before entering? Yes. Did I question my passion during my first 2 years? Definitely yes. Do I still want to become a doc? Of course yes, but this is not at all an easy task and we all know it. Please don't tell anyone that lacking these 3 would should hinder their choice. You don't know them. AND THEY DONT KNOW MED SCHOOL. And you don't know how they will do in med school.
@kjmd
@kjmd Год назад
Thanks for your comment. I see where you're coming from but your interpretation of the points I'm making in the video are different to my own intention/interpretation. 1) As I mentioned, it is absolutely possible to pivot into an alternative career other than working as a doctor. However, if your intention is not to become a doctor from the beginning then I would argue there are many other alternative degrees that are less competitive to get into and would be more beneficial for your desired pathway. The primary purpose of a medical degree is to create doctors, I don't think anyone would disagree with that. 2) If there is a spectrum for people and how much they enjoy studying, at one end there are the people who outright hate studying, in the middle would be people who enjoy it at times and find it tedious at times (i.e. they can tolerate it) and at the other end are people who enjoy it all the time. What I'm saying is that people who identify as being on the end of the spectrum that hate studying probably shouldn't go to medical school because there is an immense amount of studying required. There are many other degrees that one can pursue that require less study and perhaps they would be more suitable options. 3) I specifically am referring to people who "hate" talking to other people. Most people probably don't identify in this way, but I'm sure that there are some people who would rather spend their work day not communicating with others. Working as a doctor inherently has lots of communication so if you know you don't enjoy talking to people then you probably won't enjoy being a doctor. I agree that med school can help cultivate your skills and build new ones. I also became a better studier throughout the course of medical school, but that's not the point I'm making here. However, the things I'm referring to here are fundamental aspects of your being that you should know before you apply to medical school. That's why med schools have strict entry requirements, including an interview, to assess your personality and whether you would be a good fit. I stand by what I said.
@blueq4324
@blueq4324 Год назад
I wish I could agree with this. But I don't. 1- the closest "friends" you have will send you down a ditch if it means more opportunity for them. This sociopathic behavior isn't just common, it's also encouraged by the system we are being forced in. 2- although the material is interesting, at the end of the day all we care about is exams and boards. With so much information, only the testable information is what we find pertinent and is what we chase. 3- Privilege is a funny one. Patients lie. Physicians lie. The world hates us. The NHS for example didn't just suffer a huge amount of doctors who quit for no reason. In America, the battle between insurance companies/ other Healthcare professionals (PAs n NPs) and the physicians is not subtle. It's only getting worse. Yet with all this, I'm still finding medicine fascinating.
