It's intended for super long cable runs up to 3000 meters. the idea is that it boosts the signal before the cable run so that the signal you want doesn't dissipate over such a long run. I am assuming that you performed your test in a studio environment with a standard xlr cable which would explain the extra noise added.
The piano doesn't sound natural at all. The out of tune unison's are distracting also. Adding that pitch shifted piano is adding some rumble way down at 50 hz maybe?
