I have no need for this kit but am sure I will pick one up. WGA feels like they make all these different kits just because they can. I’ve even started warming up to the oddball Quar’a War minis.
As I mentioned in the intro, they do a good job of covering a lot of obscure gaps in other miniature companies ranges and hitting a ton of different time periods/subjects. This comes at the expense of not having any complete ranges yet (though they seem to be taking a different tack with their Medieval range, which has 4 more kits coming this fall) but in the short term it means I’m also constantly hit with similar thoughts of “oh hey look, another kit I don’t need but will probably pick up anyway.”
@@fearlessfreep3962 Planning to pick up the Conquistadors for my Empire and…well, all of the Medieval boxes for my alternate Bretonnians. Going to be a busy couple of months!
@@mhovar101 Yeah I relate to that concern, where only a handful of releases per year truly interest me. On the flip side I prefer this method to the Perry Brothers, who (other than their limited forays into WoTR and HYW) pretty much exclusively put out Napoleonic, Civil War, and WW2 releases that don’t interest me.
As new to the hobby I didn’t know about the unique slightly larger scale of GW minis… The best I’ve found are Forgotten Realms Northman scale well with AoS. Perry’s are tiny in comparison. Oathmark and Frostgrave - you can just about get away with… but are smaller.
Thanks for the comment, and great insights! Yes, Perry are tiny compared to GW, they scale better with the LoTR line that was deliberately sculpted at 25mm to be incompatible with Warhammer. I’ll check our Forgotten Realms Northmen, I’m not familiar with the range. I also think ASOIaF models from Cool Mini or Not would scale well with GW stuff, and Wargames Atlantic’s newer offerings are probably at the extreme end of historical figures that could fit in with Warhammer/Age of Sigmar figures.
@@Dan-ds8sf Sorry it’s Fireforge games Forgotten Worlds… All mini’s in this range scale very well with GW….. Their dwarf range, stone warriors are really good. Prefer them to AoS. Being new to the hobby, one of the things that annoys me about GW, compared with other plastic miniature sets, is by and large they’re really limited in terms of variety, and being able to put your own pose on the miniature. Compared with sets from oath Mark, or frost grave, which you can have a real fun time building those miniature as you could end up some really unique looking miniatures, and poses….. I find some GW sets, subsequently, really boring to build. The only option you might swap out a few different optional heads So Perry then? Didn’t want to scale well with GW??? I thought it was GW that scaled there’s different to everyone else?
@@LaMOi1GW kits used to be properly multipose like Oathmark and Frostgrave, they’ve shifted to single pose plastics almost exclusively in the past 5 years or so because they can make more dynamic poses. I also prefer multipart options like we still see with historical kits, but I’m biased. The Perry’s used to work for GW and sculpted the LoTR range, and as was mentioned in another comment they were contractually forced to sculpt them smaller than the Warhammer range (25mm truescale vs 28mm heroic) so the models couldn’t really be interchangeable. What you’ll find in exploring historical plastics and metals (other than fantasy offerings from Fireforge and Wargames Atlantic, which are intentionally make a little big) is that GW is really the outlier in making their stuff too big, not that other manufacturers are making things too small.
Yeah I plan to pick up some Speed paints and see how they compare to Citadel’s Contrast range. From a glance Army Painter appears to have a much better range of colors, and I’m a fan of most of their acrylic range.
Great use for extra models. I used leftover modesl from fireforge peasants and various berserker models as my ghosts. Idea is that they're the uneasy dead from the village or small town that was sacked after the treacherous Prince Olvir Hrogtharson massacred Jarl Sigbjorn and his army in an ambush. :)
Cheers, yeah she’s too clever for her own good. Might need to sculpt some pumpkins or something in another video to meet her holiday content expectations, haha
The GW LOTR range was deliberately sculpted to be not be compatible with Warhammer Fantasy, reputedly in the licensing contract. Their inconsistency within LOTR and within Warhammer ranges is just sloppiness, along with GW’s own desires to separate their figures from other manufacturers.
This makes perfect sense, thanks for the added context. I actually prefer the LoTR scale, I kind of wish that had been the standard across all manufacturers instead of the ~1:48 / ~28mm that we have today.
Looks amazing when they're all the same scale/range. I've tried adding in some Warlord miniatures with my Empire miniatures, they really don't mix well.
Yeah, Warlord is notoriously bad with scale consistency. Depending on what era your GW Empire stuff is from, some WGA and Victrix stuff could mix in decently, but aesthetically there isn’t a lot from either company yet that mixes in well with 6th/7th Ed Empire (other than WGA Landsknecht Ogres and Conquistadors, depending on exactly what list you’re running).
Super simple conversion that makes them fit right in. Love how it bridges the gap between the ww1 krieg aesthetic and the cadian look. I think having the heavy weapon converted really gives them that 40k vibe.
Thanks for the comment! Something in between Krieg and Cadia was exactly what I was going for, glad it comes across. Thinking I’ll make up a command squad next.
Cool models kinda basic but very effective kitbash :), btw if you want to get into sci fi wargaming but dont want to deal with GW nonsense when it comes to codexes etc check out One Page Rules if you havent yet :P personally im making an army with wargames atlantic infantry + kitbashed "sci-fied" historical tank models its lots of fun :P
Yeah OPO is great for some relaxed gaming, I’ve tested out their fantasy rules and think they’re really effective for noncompetitive settings. Also an excellent way to get new people into the hobby as a kind of gateway to more complex systems.
Great timing, I just got some Byzantine banners for my Victrix Late Romans! There are some hanging banners in there too, which only seem to have a print for one side. I guess you just paint the back to look like blank cloth?
Yes, exactly, you’ll see a similar-looking hanging banner make a brief appearance at the very start of the video. Apply the transfer in the same way, and then ultimately paint the back side of the banner whatever color you like - I prefer doing this before cutting anything out but you could also do this once the banner is glued in place and dried.
Yeah those would make a good kitbash for Krieg, I also think their French could be thrown into the mix because they have the long trench coat-style uniforms and the backpacks.
Yeah they’re really incredible; their banners are awesome but where they really shine is with their shield transfers, which make the old water slide system (like the ones we all had for our first Space Marine shoulder pads!) look positively dated.
Hi i recently got into miniature hobby, didn't know that it existed. I somehow got myself over 300 victrix and fireforge minis and no bases for them. Solution i found in local art shop in form of really thick cardboard what artists use for back of paintings. Quick calculations gives me about 500 bases 25x25 mm for the cost of 3.5 pounds, don't know how well the carboard bases will hold up in longer period of time, but it will fix the immediate problem .
Great suggestion, only issue (as you point out) is wear over time. For those of us who don’t actually game very much its a fantastic, economical solution for models that will sit in a display case most of the time. Welcome to the hobby!
Great kitbash but they already make a great sci fi line for cadians or any other guard in their deathfields especially the wo-rah or canon fodder line even comes with all the major sci fi weapons
Oh for sure, their Ooh Rah are great and their Reptilian Overlords Catachans are probably some of the best sci fi models I’ve seen. Just thought it’d be fun to try out another unit with a “sci fi WW1” look to fight alongside the boys from Krieg.
🔥🤘❤ loved the video bro , need to use the tip with the water myself i always forget lol but i thought about it hence the carnage part lol .... much appreciated the shout out to 😮❤ 🙏 and as always... so glad you enjoyed the videos , even though I still can't speek proper lol 😅 but that's half the fun hahaha
You’re too hard on yourself man, I’ve never had any issue understanding you! You want to talk about difficult to understand: my brother in law is from Northern Ireland, and when I’m at the bar with him and his mates from Derry I have no idea what’s going on after about 3 beers haha
The 2 crested helmet for the strategos is a very good Idea. The last figure i have seen with it was a very old discontinued figure from wargames foundry. Great set
Yes, this one also shows up in their Hoplite Heads kit, which is a great addition for those who have the older style hoplites but want access to that bit.
Yeah, it’s become mine too! With that said there will still be crossovers into fantasy (I’m currently working on a 40k video, of all things) but the foundation of the miniatures for the channel, regardless of what system I use them in, will be historical.
Great timing for this. These look great! A few weeks ago I built my Hopitaller force from Fireforge Mounted Templars (and some of their resin shields) and the Wargames Atlantic foot knights. Got side tracked with Bolt Action but will get to painting these before too long.
@@fearlessfreep3962 Ironically I just started converting up some Imperial Guard (video coming soon) even though I don’t play or have any intention of playing. Sometimes it’s nice to just collect and paint for the sake of it.
@@Dan-ds8sf never get notifications lately on yt about comments 😢 but glad I check myself .... I really appreciate the support and tbh I just try lol is all we can do .. but still you do be pumping out that 🔥 work ... as always cant wait for the next one 👍❤️💪
Just had the same experience with Vallejo matte varnish. I felt it did nothing, did not make the shiny stuff matte, or the matte stuff glossy. I have had very good results with ak interactive ultra matte varnish, but this time I grabbed vallejo because it was close to the airbrush.
Yeah really bizarre, glad to hear it wasn’t just me! I’ll give it another shot on my next batch of miniatures, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that in a best case it just looks the same (as you found). Shame, since Vallejo is otherwise great, and there are fantastic, similarly-priced options from Army Painter, AK Acrylics, Testors, etc.
Great paint job, unit looks awesome. The 20mm bases look a bit too small though, I use 25mm or even 30mm bases for many of my fantasy units as 28/30 mmm minis can't often fit on even 25mm bases. I too have mixed Fireforge, with Wargames Atlantic knights. Looking forward to the Victrix Foot Knights which are due out any day now.
Yep, agreed most miniatures look better on 25’s if they’re not trying to achieve a shieldwall or close order ranks. It’s just the old Warhammer player in me that seems to think everything should be on 20mm squares.
