I get extra 1 hour shooting with 4K XAVC HS 100 mpbs vs 4K XAVC S. The only caveat is you need an editing machine that are capable of natively decode the H.265 codec or else you’re pretty much in trouble.

Good to see you pop up on my feed again and perfect timing - my freelance journey has been getting me down recently and I’ve entertained getting a 9-5. A couple of thoughts: - I don’t think passion and work is always healthy. I started freelancing for passion and reached my ‘peak income’ in 2021 (the income I want to get to before tax rates go up and I’d have to start expanding), and now every year I work so hard to maintain that peak income, not for the passion. - Feeling mundane in a 9-5 seems like a symptom of being a creative person and having our creativity limited too much by external sources. Whether that’s creativity in your life with evening/weekend activities or creativity within video/photo projects. - You’ve done the right thing in experiencing both to experiment. I think life is all about balance and different people have different balances. I’m starting to think that the perfect balance is a 9-5 for 3 days a week and having freelance work around that. That sounds like a healthy balance between creativity, stability and passion, but our world is not really built around a 3 day work week!

Hey thanks for sharing your experience. It’s very refreshing to hear you speaking about the things in life you are wrestling with instead of the copy paste productivity tips I see elsewhere. To finding your own thoughts I feel very similar where I am generally more reactive than proactive. For me I would put it as creativity for my job is reflex at this point, where as creativity for my hobby is novel hard work where I feel like my ability does not align with my ambition which creates a creative road block. Also I would ask how much time do you spend without tv or podcasts? I worry I let my brain listen to other conversations more than I make it work on its own, which leads to a lack of space for creative thinking.
@boywithacamera
@boywithacamera Месяц назад
Thank you for the kind words and I’m glad you found it refreshing. I really like your distinction between proactive and reactive creativity in the contexts of work vs. hobby! That might account for a lot of the blocks I’ve been feeling. Jobs always seem to provide an endless stream of things to react to, don’t they? I’ll have to sit on this, thank you for sharing. I actually made a video similar to your last point-I believe it was called Let’s Quit RU-vid or something along those lines. I was noticing something similar, where I was consuming at a far higher rate than my own creating. Nowadays, I feel that I’ve gotten past that point, but when I feel listless, I do catch myself turning the brain off and just consuming NBA games/content or Korean variety shows haha. That usually indicates to me that I need to switch something up.

Thank you for sharing. I have thoughts - but am struggling to summarise them in a youtube comment. I recognise in you a lot of what i have gone through myself. I don't have all the answers myself yet - but i have found new happiness in seeking change and serendipity (doing things just to see what happens). Maximising variability in life. Despite doing well in the career space, I am very disillusioned with the return I have enjoyed with financial success (relative to input). A very first world problem i admit. One I am working to fix myself. Heres to hoping we can one day get what we seek!

Thank you for your time and I relate all too well to struggling to summarize thoughts into comments, texts, etc.! The idea of maximizing variability in life is intriguing; I believe I’ve tried that before, but it has been a while so I may need to revisit that idea and explore what application would look like today. It is humbling/grounding to recognize these are indeed first world problems so thank you for bringing that up. Does not discount these problems, of course, but a good thing to keep in mind. Let’s keep moving forward and please share any exciting updates you experience!

I wanted to create art I cared about and quickly learned that the means to fuel my art was not what I wanted. I turned it back into a hobby. 100% agree with a lot here. I did freelance video and photo work for 3 yrs and was never able to get it to a financially stable point. Had some things change in my personal life and had to pivot to stability - ended up lucking out big time landing a full time video position at an agency that's been a great experience so far - I fit in well with the team/culture and I do work that's fulfilling to me. Work used to consume my life in my freelance days but now I literally have friends telling me in person and over the phone that I look and sound like I'm doing a lot better which is v much true. Sure I may have lost a lot of flexibility to work on unpaid passion projects, but I can def say I live a much more balanced and healthier life with a much better outlook moving forward. I do still feel the need to work on personal passion projects here and there that I make time for occasionally, and it's been great to not have to worry about money/stability as much anymore and instead enjoy life with friends/family. Obvi this is just in this current life season so who knows things could change (I always thought a full time creative job would just feel draining). But for now this seems alright for me.
@boywithacamera
@boywithacamera Месяц назад
Hey Jon, that is fantastic. I am glad to hear that you’ve found your full time creative job to be a stable and well balanced career rather than draining! It’s always a good sign when people around you say you look and sound like you are doing better. It’s great that you’re open to this being a current life season too; I personally feel that to be a much more stable approach to life, ironically. Always great to see a comment from you and I hope you continue to thrive and make time for passion projects when you have the time to do so.

Interesting to note that when you used to be in survival free lancer mode you looked into the walled garden of the 9 to 5 and craved the stability and predictable monotony and now that you feel somewhat shackled by the very elements that used to be attractive. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your pov as you've actually experienced both sides. I've always been on the 9 to 5 grind from the outside looking in, very much wondering how I'd fare trying to make a living from creative endeavours. I agree with the quantifying everything when you view everything in a practical lens, does sorta damper your outlook on life. It's a very utilitarian approach that seems to be absent perhaps when you're younger where you don't even look at every element in life in those terms. Where a proportionality analysis is not at the forefront before every task you undertake 😂 Always nice to hear what you gotta say, been following since I came across that IBIS comparison video.
@boywithacamera
@boywithacamera Месяц назад
Yes, one thing I didn’t clearly mention was the irony that I’m beginning to feel one-dimensional in a very similar way to when I was in the freelance space. I appreciate your time and hope that my experience doesn’t dissuade you from exploring your creative endeavours in some sort of capacity at least! It is my personal experience and I do have friends who are doing well in that space. Yes, utilitarian approach is a great description and I agree that it seems to be largely absent during our younger years! Probably why we always refer to those years as simpler times haha. Proportionality analysis! I like the way you put that haha. The IBIS video was a fun one to make-I appreciate your support all this time!

Great video, this is the workflow I've been using recently, but very slightly different. Instead of creating a new album to sync, I have an existing "to edit" album which I drag photos to in Classic. After editing in CC I move them to another "to export" album so that I can export them when I get back into Classic. I was unsure about images remaining in the "all photos" folder too, but my understanding is that every photo you sync to LR CC is in the "all photos" folder, and then they are also shown in additional albums too. You can remove them from an album but they stay shared in "all photos" until you remove them from there. I asked ChatGPT to explain it to me and it said to think of shared albums as playlists of songs, you can delete a song from a play list (shared album) but it remains in your catalog of songs (all photos). My plan is just to remove finished photos from the synced album and then every so often bacth delete photos from "all photos", maybe every year or something. I just wish there was a way to get LR Classic to upload raw images to the cloud instead of only smart previews. Then I'd be able to export full sized jpegs straight from my ipad instead of having to use the "to export" album that I mentioned earlier. If this was possible, then 90% of my workflow could be from my iPad, and the only time I'd need to use Classic is for the initial import and cull. Again, brilliant video. I found it very helpful!

Cartier-Bresson famously stated that “Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.” Definitely agree with it…actually for me it was much higher until I started to think about photos like a cinematographer and not a photographer…rarely do you see shallow DOF in movies…they use light instead to shape a scene…hearing someone describe photos this way triggered something in my brain and it’s been easier ever since…Some of these images have lots of potential. The night image at -25.22 I think is fantastic reminds me of Todd Hido’s work 👍 also it’s super hard to nail any shooting from the hip with a 35mm focal length…definitely a 28mm or wider thing. With a 28mm you can pretty much nail it from the hip about 80% of the time. Really handy especially when you don’t have time to put it up to your eye…hard to predict everything!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, David. Noted on the 28 vs. 35 for shooting from the hip. I've been eyeing a 28mm as of late for this reason, but haven't jumped on anything yet!

@stuartmyers1710
@stuartmyers1710 Месяц назад
This is the same workflow I use to edit shoots on my Ipad for when I don’t want to work at the desk. I believe when you’re syncing files this way from LRC it’s syncing smart previews and not the original files. If you try to export from the Ipad it won’t do a full res export as it doesn’t have access to the original file. All Synced Photos is just a collection that shows what synced between LRC and LR Ipad and is also available in Lightroom Classic. When I’ve finished editing and un-sync the collection, I select the option to delete from All Synced Photos (If the option doesn’t show you can reset the dialog warnings in LRC settings). It basically deletes the Smart Preview from the Creative Cloud. That way my synced collections and All Synced Photo’s amounts match, if that makes sense. I also hit the 3 dots and select Store Locally on the Ipad. This means I can edit without internet and when it reconnects it uploads all the edits I made in one go. Good video 🙌 The others show importing on the Ipad and all sorts.

I'd choose this over the A7C because of the improved autofocus and the fact that it has 10-bit video. I don't have firsthand experience with the A7C II, but if you have the budget, that might be a good way to go as it will perform a bit better if you're in a lowlight setting due to the larger sensor size. I feel like the a6700 performs well enough for most people though, so you might be better off spending the extra money on lenses, lighting, audio, etc.

The M-P 240 is a great option in 2024, and it’s having a resurgence now for people wanting Leica rangefinders and seeing the price of a new M11 or used M10 or M10R The M10 is probably the sweet spot in terms of “ all round’ use but the M-P 240, imo, is the pivot point of Vibe, fun, image, resolution, affordability and it’s just about modern enough to keep up for considered photography. I think this camera is great for anyone wanting an old school Leica experience at a reasonable price. Oh and put it in black and white mode and enjoy the B&W this camera puts out.

The Sony 16-55 2.8 is def worth it since it sort of dips in the wide angle territory. Yes the lens is heavy, but in effect you get images that are sharp across the frame even in the corners. To most people just starting out tho, the sigma 18-50 2.8 is enough.
