Hello Max, I have been into the headlight housing several times and have not noticed any issues. I had an electrical fire awhile back but it was related to the left ignition coil and the fact that the ignition or other subsystes are fused normally.
Hi James, sorry I can't answer. I literally never listen to the radio while riding or driving. I don't remember ever turning on the bike radio. I have a 2015 Honda CRV and know I've never used the radio, anttena has been missing for years:)
None of that needed. Run harness wires back tru holes to hole behind headlight brace. Tuck it all in ,no cutting needed. Your fixated on cutting a hole. We call that hacking . Just made yourself and others extra work.
Very helpful. I have a quick question for you: how do you know if it is the needle, the float, or the pin that is bad? My BMW keeps on dripping a few drops here and there and when it seats at the traffic light in neutral, the RPM keeps going up until I shift gear. Should I replace them all since they are sold as a kit? thank you for your feedback Best Luca
The easiest thing to just replace all 3. If you raise the float to level and no drips, needle is probably good. If it's dripping give the bowl a few taps with a screw driver handle. If the drips stop the needle is sticking. Otherwise you may have a bad needle or heavy floats. I've never seen the pin being the problem. The RPM, I'd first check that when you release the throttle both throttle plates are seating properly and the choke/enricher is closed completely . I suspect your cables are binding/sticking.
You could test if it is the float or the needle by pushing the float up (with the fuel on) and see if it leaks, if it leaks then it is the needle that's bad. I think it would be useful is the fuel bowl would have a mark on it for correct fuel height. Then all you have to do is take the bowl off and check to see if the fuel is up to the line.
Yes very true. The float push up and check for sealing is the first step to identify the needle is bad. I believe the marking issue is the carbs are not level to begin and I always drip/spill fuel when I pull them off :)
@@edwardj456 "I always drip/spill fuel" that would be because of breaking the gasket seal, the second time will be a lot easier to remove and not spill. Two marks would be nice on the front and back, then just line them up with the petrol surface and see if the level is correct. As it is we need to use a pipe on the overflow and check against the side.
No, the centerboard was just a steel plate. All I recall is there was a reinforced area of the centerboard trunk where a big bolt passed through as a pivot point for the board. It was a heavy beast. :)
In all honesty. I don't think you should need to adjust that break arm. I think you've got air in the break system. I have had some troubles with my breaks as well and once I got the air out of the system the lever was in a good position again. Don't be too hard on Fritz! I think he did a quite great job.
I did 1,200 miles in a day on my 85 Yamaha FZ 750 sportbike with the bars raised about two inches years ago coming back from California following a storm the entire way. Most painful ride; EVER. When the new Gold Wing 1800 came out, I rented one out in California with the wife for four days, putting 3,000 miles on it, sometimes 17 hours a day. First night didn't go so well as we were forced to go to my wife's family house from the airport, instead of leaving from the rental place. Got up to King's Canyon National Park, 7,000 feet afyer dark, 25 degrees, with snow and ice all over the road ( came through Seqoia National Park, just below it a few years later and realized I coukdn't see all the drop-offs in tbe dark. ;-) ). I use to ride all year long. 3 or 4 hours we saw only three other cars, and when I got down to the valley, I nearly dropped tbe bike as my knees had frozen up. All good after that. I'm positive without my wife I could have done 4,000 in four days has tbe Gold Wing was comfy. Was drifting it with my wife on the back on High Way 1.
Thanks for video so nice to see the Thousand Mile Run besides someone riding 30000 Harley-Davidson or a new Goldwing each bike would make it a piece of cake
Edward, you do great videos, excellent commentary and good technical preparation of the bike. All respect to you for campaigning an older Airhead on your long distance riding.
Thank you for the kind words John. FYI, me and that old BMW have now completed 6 IBA SaddleSore 1000s. Had planned a 7th this past equinox but a Hurricane got too close :(
All credit to you Edward for completing six IBA SS1000 rides on the RT. I have two Airhead models, one being a ’94 R100LT (a limited production run in my country in ’93 and ’94, basically an RT but with options later released on the Classic models) and an ’88 R100RS (currently undergoing rebuild). I enjoy reading accounts of people, such as your good self, who complete endurance and long-distance rides, where advancing years and poor health has left me limited to short daily rides only. But I’m not complaining, even if not riding, I enjoy working on my Airheads. John (Sydney, Australia)
Good on you Edward i did the trans continental Perth Western Australia to Brisbane Qld down the south west via Esperance across the nullabor plains on through New South Wales to Brisbane Queensland 4,300 odd ks on my 93 R100RT great ride 4 and half days
Hello Peter, I visited Perth back in the early 1980's and had an absolutely wonderful time. If I had the wherewithal I would love to ship my bike over and do a Loop of Australia. And here in Maine USA the season is getting on to a perfect time to be in the Southern Hemisphere for a few months :)
Hi Richard, what indicators are you speaking about? The two about 2-3inch black lights mounted in the air inlets are an LED fog light and an LED Spot light. They are just some CCC from Amazon, Westin is the company name. They are OK but they are not road approved so I'm very very careful when I use them.
@@edwardj456 Thank you sorr,y I assumed they were indicators and you had not got around to blanking off the original fitted ones in the fairing,So are they too bright or fitted at the wrong height?
@@richardallan455 They work fine. I have each on a separate switch. At night on two lanes with no traffic I use both to help illuminate the road edges for wildlife. In day I run the fog just to make me more visible. But the headlight was the best bang for the buck!
True, but without high tech photographic equipment there really isn't much to see in a before/after shot of lighting. But happy to report the light is still going strong after 1 year and a bit over 10k miles.
@@BarrySoetoro187 I replaced the twin element lights park/brake with Sylvania 1157 LEDs and most if not all the mini lights in aux lighting with Sylvania 168LBP LEDs. I did not replace the turn lights since they are only on while turning. All told I shaved about 110watts of continual draw with LEDs. That was all done around the same time as the headlight.
@@edwardj456I bought these but haven't received them yet. www.amazon.com/Bright-Replacement-Camper-Signal-Backup/dp/B07G55D4JS/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Super+Bright+1156+1141%2F1003%2F1073%2FBA15S%2F7506+LED+Replacement+Light+Bulbs+18+SMD+5050+LED+Bulb+for+RV+Camper+SUV+MPV+Car+Turn+Tail+Signal+Brake+Backup+Light%2C+DC+12V+%28White%2C+10+Pcs+%29&qid=1599996569&sr=8-1
At about minute 3 you see I remove small phillip screws in each corner. Then the glass and rubber bellows comes out and the the glass is easily removed if needed.
I know this is an older video, but hopefully your still active. I have a Luger Leeward 16 that I got from a neighbor. He assembled it and used to sail it, but it's been sitting for years now. As I took it all apart I had a found the floatation under the benches and in the bow to be riddled with ant tunnels and crumbling. Do you have any insight into this boyancy material? I see you're using the pink stuff here and I have some sheets of that in my basement from a previous project. What are your thoughts on flotation with this boat? Also, my boat doesnt have any type of drain. I've seen a few others that seem to have a plug. It seems it would be difficult to remove water completely after a floor and stringers are in place.
Hello, yes those carpenter ants love foam. The floatation that came with the boat seemed to be that two part expanding foam. The foam was in bags but I didn't inspect it closely, it may have been open cell or closed :) Generally for boats closed cell is best but it costs more so too many builders use open and try to keep it from getting wet. The Pink stuff is water proof in my experiments. But I just used it to form stringers since I had some laying around, not specifically for flotation. I left space for water to drain aft and installed a removable plug.
Wanted some help with doing this to my 1984 Goldwing Aspencade Would like the link and info for the headlight and driving lights. Love the nice added driving lights you added.. Info on those would be nice thanks. Thank you very much
The headlight was from SuperbrightLED H4-HLV5-M, the driving light were from Amazon, Sprite 10w 2" CREE Spot lights. The Headlight provides plenty of light, the driving lights are mainly to help others see me!
Congratulations on your In State SS1000, well done on a classic bike. I completed an all highway SS1000 last year and will attempt and In State (Washington) this year...as soon at the COVID stay at home restrictions are lifted!.Happy riding.
sorry to be so off topic but does any of you know a method to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly forgot the account password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Sawyer Reign i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and I'm trying it out now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hello Bill, over all I've been very pleased with the LED headlight. I've done about 20hrs of nighttime riding with this LED over about 2k miles and it's still working fine. It's got a nice cutoff so it's not blinding oncoming traffic. Also I love the white light so much more then that Halogen yellow :) I've actually put the same LED in my recently acquired 1987 GL1200A, check bitchute for that install. All have been sourced from SuperBrightLED.
Argh what a pita. Restoring an r80 and was wondering.how this clip worked. Difficult to see with all the gunk and corrosion. This confirms it though thanks for the vid.
Congrats on your achievement and on a vintage bike no less. I picked up a used 2000 BMW R1100RT in late October, maybe a Saddle Sore 1000 is in my future. I’ll be sure to use my airhawk and sheepskin from my Honda. FYI... we stayed overnight in Belfast when we did a trip to Maine in our cage a few years ago.
Hi Kirk, I love that vintage BMW. I bought a R1150GS new in 2000 and it was hands down my favorite bike, but my wife hated it and she love to ride so.... An SS1000 should be a breeze on a R1100RT, that baby has great aerodynamics from what I've heard. Best of luck on your ride.
@@edwardjones8170 I too bought a BMW R1100RT last year; it was to go an on annual bike ride to mainland Europe (from England) that a group of us go on. The bike had about 79,000 miles on. on the trip, it was performing faultlessly, eating up the miles. However, just as we pulled up to the view point of the Millau viaduct in southern France, my main throttle cable snapped. So off came the tupperware to see if we could fix it, luckily the choke cable is the same as the throttle cable so we swapped them over and it took me on the rest of the trip, no problems. I can't really blame the bike for the mishap - 80k is a lot for a cable! Anyway, after falling for the allure of the boxer engine, I decided to keep her and have spent some money on new parts and a full service. A UK ironbutt is definitely being considered !! All the best, Sean
Good mornig, first of all, excuse my english i don't use often. Can you tell me some détails about the the LED light. Did you buy it on the internet, the price and the " reférence" of this product ? I suppose you see better than with the h4 light, is it a great difference ? Thanks for your answer.
Good morning Marius, I purchased this light from SuperBrightLED an internet retailer, it's item name is "H4-HLV5-M: Natural White" and cost a bit less then $50US including shipping. It's really a wonderful upgrade, it's a big difference, in my case the low beam LED seems as bright as the H-4 high beam and I love the White light it produces vs the yellow of H4. It is so impressive that I also bought two low beam LED lights for my 2008 Toyota Matrix which also uses a basic H-4 i.e. NO CAN Bus or any other data bus I know about.
@@edwardjones8170 Thank you Edward for this answer vers précise. I'll buy a LED light for my r100rt of 1982, the same as yours. It seems very easy to install.... Thank you once more. Have a nice day.
I was referring to your caption "somewhere in here someone stole my comfortable seat, yeah this is where the ss1000 gets its moniker. My saddle is making me sore." Re-reading...looks like it was meant as a quip.
There is a Leeward 16 for sale just down the street from me and I am thinking about buying it. Your vids have been very helpful to give me an idea on what to look at closer when I go take a look at it. So thanks for that. Any other tips on what to look for to determine if it is seaworthy and safe? Have you got any links to other online resources for info on these boats? Cheers!
Hello Tim, I've given the boat kit away on CL. I lost all interest when my dear friend passed. I only found a couple blogs/YT videos but nothing deep. My only other concern was the chainplates. The resins/installation used back in the day didn't seem to stand the test of time. Best of luck!
Curious Richard, what changes would you make? What do you consider critical. I'm now thinking of a CCC100, which naturally will require a few more/different items. Thanks and safe rides.
I just got my first and it's a luger Leeward 16. You mention in your video that you read instructions. Were you able to find instructions, blueprints, or other info online somewhere? I'm in for the same type challenge you are. Tks
Well done! Shouldn't be a problem with a bike like that. Brings back sweet memories...(sigh). Back in '82 my wife and I did a 1500 km trip to Italy in about 16 hours riding a R1000RS. Besides some wrist pains we did alright. I also strapped my panniers to the racks to keep 'm secured (lost some over the years..) but I used one long strap for both panniers, going behind the panniers but over the saddle. That helps in taking the weight partially off the racks. Started doing that after one rack cracked on me somewhere in France.. Best regards and watch your volts...;-) Ed.
That's a good idea about strap over seat. I hadn't thought about the racks actually developing a problem. Next trip I'll add at least a safety back line! Just yesterday I lost the Kodak camera I used to film my rides. I attached it to my racing sailboat, a Wayfarer 16, and forgot that "safety strap" so Neptune has a new toy to play with :(
Not yet. I got this project from a dear friend. I'd planned to finish and gift it back to him. But sadly he passed away back in summer 2017 and I lost most interest. I've offered it for free on CL but it didn't move.
Free? Wish I lived in your area! Trying to get the plans from the original builders families. You'd think there would be some floating around. so to speak.
I have the original plans and most of the kit HW. Bob bought this kit in 69/70 but then kids came along and the Leeward sat unloved but not forgotten. I would still like to sail it but I've bought and am racing a Wayfarer 16. Too many projects :)
Any chance of getting a scan of those plans for public distribution? I'm not the only one trying to make a Luger seaworthy again. Or I could pay a third party to scan them?
I get nervous just watching these videos of riding at night. I assume deer on the highway is a big problem in Maine (and about 48 other states). Good job, Ironbutt!
Actually Maine does not seem to have a large deer population, in fact I've never seen one on the road. My biggest concern in late night rides are drunks and cell phone zombies, I've seen many more of them then animals :(
