The Whickers were established in 2015 to fund and recognise original and innovative documentary. We seek to use the generous legacy of our namesake, pioneering broadcaster Alan Whicker, to support emerging film and audio documentary-makers in the funding and production of director led programmes. The Whickers are comprised of two annual awards: the Film & TV Funding Award and The Podcast Pitch Award. We also run a Bursary Scheme in four regions of the world where funding for documentary is limited for socio-political or economic reasons.
I met the lovely Mr Whicker and his charming partner at Jersey Airport back in the mid-1990s (I was BA cabin crew) when I was standed for three days due to fog. They were both so charming. What a lovely kind man Alan Whicker was and Ms. Kleeman also delightful. Mr Whicker had taken Valerie off to the airport in his Rolls Royce :)
Oh Jake, we love this story about meeting Michael Parkinson in Argos and him helping you carry your huge cache of hair dryers to your car. Was that quite recently? I am impressed that he was taking an air fryer home on the bus. 'Man of the people' was Parky.
Get real Michael Parkinson was a great interviewer on stage with guests , Alan Whicker was a roving reporter out in the field which he was brilliant at .
Sorry I never got Parky and am mystified by the all the pangyrics. I found him fawning and obsequious and his middle of the road celebrity luvvie interviewees tedious. Not to mention the professional Yorkshireman act. Whicker on the other hand was penetrating and a genuine tv innovator
Such a lovely man... Parky.... We loved him.....Talented. Charming, Witty , outrageous flirt. ... ..interviewing was his game - his skill - Listening.... allowing the guest to tell their story ...captivating. The viewer... thats how he got the best guests... ... thanx Parky for so many years you gave us 💚
Parky died the other day. Here in this video he was frail. His speech was slurred, even more so, than his normal Yorkshire brogue. (a broad gentle-sounding dialectal accent, 👉 🇬🇧 🇮🇪) His wife warned him about his heavy drinking, at the peak of his popularity. It probably extended his life by 20 years. RIP Mr. Parkinson. Cheers mate 🇬🇧
Somewhere there must be a clip of Terry Wogan's first TV Chat Show when Whicher and Parkinson came on to tell him how to do it. Thank for this superb video.
I met him in Argos once, he was picking up an air fryer and helped me carry my purchase (jumbo pack of hairdryers) to the car. He jested "Imagine if they got our orders mixed up- they sound similar but you wouldn't want to air fry your hair!" I laughed as I don't have any hair (I was picking them up for purposes I can't really get into due to an ongoing legal issue) and then he laughed and said "I might be able to fry my spuds with a hair dryer though!" Clearly he wouldn't be able to, he was just making polite conversation because he had time to kill before his bus arrived and I didn't want to offer him a lift because I had to move the passenger seat quite far forward to fit in all the hairdryers (they couldn't go in the boot because something else was in the boot which I also can't disclose due to the issues mentioned above)
Squatting on someone's land for 40 years, not contributing anything to the public purse, cutting down trees, getting pissed on homemade wine, getting the benefits of the welfare system. What a knob. Hate him.
Just watched this programme on netflix. Mind blowing...touching beyond words. Such admiration for Einz's family...so brave and loving. A heartbreaking programme...but what are we without love and hope.
Alan Whicker and Valerie the best ever presenter No one will ever come close Even the appalling Michael Parkinson who lost it many times on his chat show Remember Ali and Meg Ryan Alan would never ask about money or ask stupid questions Parkinson’s attitude was bitter and too much about Yorkshire Alan Whicker never talked about his life He let the guest talk and had a wonderful partner Valerie Thank you he is my role model
The best ever He was the best Knew how to interview. Not confrontational Michael Parkinson was awful he lost it with Ali and talked about money too much also Yorkshire He never learnt anything off the master Mr Whicker I use Mr Whicker as a role model. I learnt off him Thank you Mr Whicker and his lovely partner Valerie
Alan Whicker was an officer and a gentleman, To a fault. bless him, and with thanks for educating myself, and my late parents. Valerie Kleemans life must be a very lonely life without alan, bless you. and thank you.
Alan Whicker is one of several people whom I have known come through sandhurst officer training, and as a result are officers and gentlemen to a fault. bless you
I'm here having just watched Whicker's War which Valerie very rightly calls a triumph. I'd had somehow missed it at the time of its transmission, but it was one of the most interesting war chronicles and amazing to know that footage I had been watching for years had been captured by Alan and his colleagues.
