As a history note, the Watergate scandal brought down President Nixon, not the vice president. Nixon's vice president, Spiro Agnew, who was in no way implicated in the Watergate scandal, had already resigned as a result of a criminal probe in Maryland uncovering a history of extortion, bribery, kickbacks, and tax evasion while he was a county official, and later governor, of Maryland.
maybe is is just my sense of humor, but i do not find this show to be a comedy. it is a show about serious topics that keeps it interesting. ok, there are some jokes mixed in, but all in all not that funny.
The Wire is the greatest show ever on television. Its not the most fun (game of thrones) its not the most entertaining (breaking bad) its not the best acted (the sopranos) its not the smartest (the west wing) but its the most important. its the one most in search of the truth over getting a great shot. its the true mirror of america and the drug trade. its life, death, loss, hope, greed, pride, and everything inbetween. its the only great show that truly teaches you why things are the way that they are. its a masterpiece. episode one i thought "oh its just a cop show" by episode 4 i was truly gripped. by the start of the second season i was salivating. it just builds and builds and gets better and better and reads like a book. a true great american novel spewed out onto film. i do recommend.
10 years after the series ended, Gen Petraeus did the same thing, spilling classified secrets to his mistress. Amazing how fact follows fiction sometimes.
These are neither YA nor kids' movies nor books. The target audience for the first book was 10-12, the same ages as the main characters. The books matured with the audience. The series appeals to all ages. You'll see why.
When I saw this movie in the theatres, I had not read the books. The audience was full and I loved hearing in the audience gasps of people who were so excited to see stuff they knew come to life in the film and I was a touch jealous of them.... but I was happy I got to be excited by new things.
Just subscribed, always exciting to watch a New Sweet Summer Child react to one of the best Series ever produced. I believe that Dothraki Wedding site was in Gozo, Malta's sister island. It will benefit you if you turn on the subtitles, as it helps indentify the characters and the Dothraki translations. Enjoy the Rollarcoater Ride.
It starts out for kids. It starts out YA. It doesn't stay that way. Eventually it will be so dark that you will be grateful that they started out slow.
Great episode, great acting, great suspense. Lot of those “Sorkinisms” being used, like the initial conversation being Joe and CJ. Toby and Will. Toby and Charlie. Both have that classic Toby is too frustrated to finish a sentence 😂. Everybody is great!
Maybe I'm reading too much into it but I love that Leo was so willing to stick by Hoynes given that he helped set him up with the AA meetings back in season one.
I have seen each movue at least 50 times and read all the books. Each movie has a purpose so hang jn there. Love that you are doing one of my favorite series.
This show has 13 episodes for each season except for the last season which is 21 episodes, but great episode moving the plot forward and I’m excited for “The Wire” reactions coming soon, highly recommend
Spiro Agnew resigned as VP because of charges of bribery and tax fraud. He didn't have anything to do with watergate, Nixon's VP was Gerald Ford..(Geraaaaald) He's still the only President and Vice President that wasn't elected. For now anyway, let's see how the next five months play out. Good job on the videos, guys!
"And hats off to Sorkin for not writing the same character twice. There's been many shows and movies that are guilty of that were an actor can't return so they make a new character and then all of a sudden it's just the same character beats again." Not to be disagreeable, but The West Wing is kind of guilty of that too. The conflict centered around the hiring of Joe Quincy (Why would a Republican want to serve in the democratic white house? Because they have a duty?) is similar to Ainsly Hayes and Lionel Tribby and Oliver Babbish both enjoy extoling the histories of various artifacts they have on hand.
Agnew's resignation had nothing to do with Watergate. From Copilot: "Spiro T. Agnew, the 39th vice president of the United States, resigned in 1973. His downfall began when he was investigated for accusations of extortion, bribery, and income-tax violations related to his tenure as governor of Maryland. Faced with federal indictments, Agnew pleaded no contest to a single felony charge of tax evasion and resigned from office. His resignation marked the first time a vice president had stepped down under duress."
Before 1967, there was no mechanism for filling a vacancy in the vice presidency, and the office was vacant for a cumulative total of 35 years. Since the 25th amendment, it has occurred twice, both times involving Gerald Ford, who replaced Spiro Agnew as VP, then succeeded Nixon, then appointed Nelson Rockefeller. Unlike other appointments, it has to be confirmed by both houses.
Because it will get lost in the events, Josh was offering to let Donna work with CJ's team on the leak, to which she responded "You're saying I can do this?" John Hoynes is... either a complicated character or an inconsistent one. He started out as the villain in S1. He seemed overwhelmed by events in S2, while still starting the MS breadcrumbs. He was a hero in S3's Stirred, where he takes his name of a bill just because it will help people. Now we find out he's a philanderer who has spilled secrets. . . . Spoilers but not really spoilers... . . . If you are familiar with Tim Matheson's career, the replacement to Hoynes is kinda funny.
POINT OF ORDER. It wasn't the Watergate scandal that led to a Vice President resigning. (It does occur to me that maybe when Kevin mentioned it, he might have just jumped up a rung and mentioned Nixon/Watergate as an even higher/bigger/more shocking example.) Agnew resigned BEFORE Watergate in a MASSIVE, MASSIVE scandal that hardly anyone remembers because of what went down months later with Nixon. Rachel Maddow did an entire podcast series about the Agnew scandal. The name of the series, BAG MAN, gives a hint as to what KIND of scandal we're talking about. So, yeah... Agnew was replaced with Ford.
Yes. Episode one my voice is only coming through the left side. Going forward it has been fixed. It was my first time using OBS software and I didn't have it set to mono.
I think even more damning than the repecussions comment is Livia saying "God only knows what he says." Like she's clearly implying that he's not just talking about her with that comment.
I'm pretty sure this episode was supposed to be about Bill Clinton having affairs and how Sorkin doesn't think that's something worth resigning over. But he gave him a legitimate reason to resign: Hoynes leaked classified information. It was the "pillow talk" that killed him.
Don't know how much ahead you are with watching, but just wanna say don't end the season finale too early or you will miss an important after-credit scene.
I love how you guys are both so insightful about what's coming up on the show, but how you will still be blown away by the ending of this season. You'll see, though, that this ending is surprising but not out of left field. Some other great guest appearances are coming up. Enjoy.
This, along with some other episodes, really sets up the season finale and the opening of the next season…you've got to go all the way back to season 1...
"In 2024 it wouldn't matter." The affair is not what took down John Hoynes. It was leaking classified information to a reporter. That she was sleeping with him was the reason why he did it, but the affair would not have gotten him by itself. It's chump change. What mattered was the leak.
I love this episode, I just had two issues with it. 1. They could have foreshadowed it in some of the previous episodes. They had plenty of space for it to appear. 2. Introducing Matthew Perry’s character for this could have been better. I would have preferred an established character to run this down. The reason for that will come later
I'm excited to watch you watch something solo! And especially GoT, which is absolutely a wild ride. I came to it late and all I knew in advance was the name of an event that happened (but not who it involved or when it happened) + that there were dragons. It's totally possible to get through it without spoilers, you just have to be vigilant!
I will be! I'm really excited to get to the middle of it where I'm truly blind. The budget blows up and it seems like that's when this was all everyone ever talked about.
I'm always surprised when people view the Viserys-Dany relationship as incestuous. Sure, he takes her gown off and strokes her but he's making sure she's ready for the Khal - "You have a woman's body now". He shows no more interest in her than he would a horse he was selling. Because to him, that's all she is (as evidenced by the famous line about his whole tribe, which you cut). I found this channel through For All Mankind. Always good to find a channel that covers the shows I like.
they do not expel all Slytherins because it is not ALL Slytherins are bad, it is all bad are Slytherins. there are good Slytherins as well. Slytherin's prime characteristics are ambition and cunning.
