My mother and grandparents are from War, WV. I remember visiting almost every weekend. They ran the little grocery store across the road from the high school on the opposite side of the river. Lynn and Margaret Methena. My mom was Wilma Chamberlain (Gray). All have passed on now but it brings back wonderful memories of my childhood.
I visited my grandpa in Bramwell, just 2 weeks ago! Watching this video makes me want to go back there again! Bramwell is a cool and nice place if you want a peace of mind.

My dad grew up in Loyall. My papaw worked for the L&N. I found an old Harlan Daily Enterprise article about my papaw that said he purchased the pulpit for the Baptist church in Chevrolet. I'm glad to see the church is still there.

We've been to Lynch a couple of times on mission trips, Brother Lonnie Riley from Meridzo ministry directed us to a couple of houses that needed a new roof, wonderful people who are very proud of their heritage ! We stayed in the old hospital beside the catholic church !!!
You're very welcome for that new floodwall, the floodwall graphics and the relocated highway around the downtown. I was one of the project leads during the Corps planning, design and construction of that floodwall, Mate Creek subdivision, high school floodwall and other flood protection projects in the Tug Fork Valley. If you are there sometime check out the history of Matewan shown on the graphics outside the floodwall, from Jurassic period formation of coal to NS coal trains and the feud, lots of work but fun and saves a great little town.
My hometown. Was born there in June of 1948. In 1954 when my grandfather retired from the Norfolk and Western RR, our family moved from Pennsylvania Av. to Orlando, FL. I remember the old Rexal Drug Store and the old walk in movie theater next door. I attended the Richlands First Presbyterian Church. I've been fortunate to travel the world through my work, but my roots are in Richlands. The mountains are in my blood. Thanks for the memories.
Why did it take so long to figure out that the coal companies really had no concern for their workers? I have never understood the people of Kentucky and West Virginia who talk big game about loving the place but let coal companies destroy the environment and their lives.
