Hi there. Had the aeortic valve replaced this past Valentine's Day! It's been six months already. A bit rough a first but take one day at a time and you will heal.

Hi -thanks so much for this video. I'm having open heart surgery on Aug 15 and am so nervous/anxious about it all. This was helpful to hear about the process and recovery from a patient's perspective. I'm not sure how I won't be a wreck so it was good to hear that you were calm the day of surgery. I hope you are doing well. Thanks again and take care.

Hello, thanks for these videos, they have been a big help. I’m a 74 year old diabetic in the UK. I’m going to go for a covid test tomorrow then go into hospital on Tuesday ready for my op on Wednesday. I guess my age says I may take longer to recover! Glad you are ok now.

I just saw this now. I’m having open heart surgery in 2 days. I was basically asymptomatic although I had been experiencing subtle symptoms for years that I never associated with my heart. I was also born with a bicuspid valve, which I never knew. The way I found out about it was that I almost blacked out on the treadmill twice so I knew something was off when I knew I wasn’t dehydrated or hungry. Sure enough, my aortic valve was at a critical stage. I still walk 5 miles a day. It’s the craziest thing that ever happened to me.

Great set of videos Tim, thanks for doing them. I am facing both an aorta replacement (aortic root aneurysm) and a repair/replacement of the aortic valve here in a few weeks. I’m trying to avoid doing them through the typical OS procedure and instead through a minimally invasive procedure but only a handful of cardiac surgeons in the US do that. Found Dr. Doolabh in Dallas and Dr. Lamelas in Miami, have consults set up with both over the next 2 weeks to see if I am a candidate or not. Do you still have the HD? I’m a rider too, thus rather have the 2-4 week recovery with the minimally invasive procedure and I chose to get the new bike (BMW R1200GSA) now rather than after surgery. I just did a riding camping trip last weekend with a few buddies and plan to do more this summer unless the surgery recovery takes longer. Hope you are still doing well now 7yrs later.

I had a ultrasound follow up today after having a heart attack 4 years ago when they found the bicuspid valve ..the echo cardiologist said they have noticed its narrowed more and I should hear from my dr in the next week ..I think I am going to have to have surgery on it and I'm crapping myself right now ..I'm so not looking forward to open heart surgery ..I'm glad to see it's not just me that is really worried about it ..im 45 so it will be a mechanical I should imagine..thanks for uploading this

Hang in there. I’m sure you’ll do great! Mechanical is the right choice at your age. I chose that at 40 when I had my surgery. Thankfully they were able to perform a repair and not a replacement. I send up a prayer.

Thx for the videos. If you're still checking, or whoever is on here, I have a couple of questions. What was the cath like pre-surgery? That scares the crap out of me. Also, how bad was the pain when they pulled the drainage tubes out? Thanks in advance.
@MensTownChannel

I heart Slovenia don’t have memory of the cath so it must not have been bad. The drainage tube certainly took my breath away when they pulled it. The strangest feeling some discomfort but not overly painful. But it will gut punch you lol. You’ll do great!

I just had mine done 30 days ago, and now find this video. :) Your story sounds just like mine, including the malformed heart, military service (1970-2004), how quickly it came up, and even your time line. I almost didn't have it done (due to my age) but, my youngest wants me to walk her down the aisle next fall. So, I finally agreed. While I'm originally from Cleveland, I had mine done at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville. Excellent care!

My heart was healthy and strong and I wasn’t gonna die even though it felt like I was.
