First of all: Thank you for the overview, you gave me some good inspiration how to use this software. It's a pity that it doesn't seem to run flawlessly on windows. I run it on Debian Linux, installed it via the package manager and until now I had no problems what so ever.

Thank you for uploading again! I recently picked up writing after a years long break and I just discovered you! I had no idea how much I needed your channel and all the information you have made on writing and creating. Going through the exercises and methods along with you in my own projects helped me immensely, and it's only been a few days since first watching your videos. I really like your straight forward approach and the overall way you explain and break down these processes. Your insights about not just the theory but also how it works in practice is so helpful! To actually be able to SEE you apply all this knowledge in your own novel is such a good way of presenting new information. Thank you once again, I appreciate your work so very much!

Great video and really great introduction to the application. There are a couple of things I would like to say, though. The "sharing site" that you mentioned is actually a developer platform where (mostly) free software developers create, store, manage and share their code. The unknown source alert is a Windows/Antivirus issue which falsely flags things which it "thinks" is dangerous. For posterity sake, this is usually a false positive because FOSS code are usually very safe, infact more safe than usual proprietary ones. FOSS software which are usually developed by single or very few developers share their application on Github. They do not have large company funding their applications. So please do not think the application is not safe to use, it is just the issue of how Windows handles these. Your other user experience issues are very genuine. The installation process can be streamlined especially for the windows OS because users there are more accustomed to click and install things.

I am writing a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Mystery. I reveal the initial mystery subtly throughout the first act (it's all in a 3-act story structure) as I focus more on world-building and character development. My Main Character initially isn't concerned with what's happening around her despite it reaching critical levels of danger. She is way more focused on her life goal of reaching the City of Earth (a literal City in space in Earth's orbit), where she will begin her dream of joining Space Corp, starting off as a Cadet at the Space Corp Academy. In the background, the world is in upheaval from a Solar Event that happened earlier that morning, resulting in unheard-of things in the 26th Century: blackouts, earthquakes, and odd (even dangerous) behavior in AI-powered technology. At the same time, social unrest taking place out in the streets protesting Space Corp-which has been pummeled by scandal after scandal-begins to have major political implications for the organization. In the Second Act, officially as a Cadet, my MC begins to unravel a conspiracy involving her late parents, who were officers in Space Corp. All her life, she knew them to be heroes, but there is some doubt as she finds classified information, which she can easily access because AI-powered bioscanners, *which controls all forms authentication,* returns her bioscan results as her late mother, giving her access to very classified data. This leads the MC down a rabbit hole of fact-seeking, which paints a picture that shatters her worldview, creating even more mystery and tension. She discovers her parents, just before dying in an incident at Titan Station at Saturn, were part of a very top-secret project called the *Eden Protocol.* It becomes her new goal to find out what this is, as it appears that everyone who has worked on this project, such as her parents, has been killed. By the third act, the big reveals are made, and the great conspiracy theory becomes a reality. The Eden Protocol becomes active, and the meaning of life for all of humanity changes...permanently.

I loved how you brought up the source for your tool Singular Plot Action, I will definitely be reading up on Poetics of Aristotle! & your summary is spot-on, in order to make the plot cohesive there has to be an achievable(and achieved!) goal, & that's what we as writers can hope to build up to :) thanks for this!

Thanks for taking the time to do such a thorough review. I have known about Manuskript for a while and I learnt some new things through watching your clip. I'm sorry you had running issues in Windows - I've found that some other Linux-generated software has similar behaviour - DarkTable (RAW editing for images), so it could be something that might not be resolved for some time. I note that it's almost a year since you released this clip, and given this particular software is still in development, perhaps some new features have been added and some issue overcome. My biggest reservation about using it is that if I am including physical features for my characters - height, weight, age, etc., - then I need to create new headings for each in the relevant page, which can get tedious. I'd much prefer it if creating a feature was immediately included in the relevant page for all other characters.

Thanks for the review. I suspect this program runs more comfortably on Linux than on Windows. I have it running on Linux without issue and chose it because I was looking for an alternative to Scrivener. I can get Scrivener running in Linux but only through Wine. Manuskript is Scrivener-ish.

@Throughwinter882

I like it. You did a good job outlining and incorporating elements of a good opening and touched on what was needed in the revision. And you are right; it could use a bit more dialog, subtext, and free indirect speech. For example, what's one way to show/imply that Alex has no idea what to do? The host could ask him why he's not writing the story down, or his interaction with the senior investigator could show Alex forgot to do an integral part of his investigation. In old pulp novels, they did this by showing something like a young cop who forgets to rope off a crime scene or a new doctor forgetting to run a specific test and getting lectured by senior coworkers. It's a good way to anchor readers in a scene. Anyway, thanks for the video!

Joplin is the true king when it comes to writing I mean you can throw everything at it and this also plugins that you could add to it to add a lot of the features that has been mentioned here and more. Just Joplin is also free and open source unbelievable a great piece of software once you understand how they really use it.

I tried everything including Dabble. I loved Dabble's Plotting Information Grid that automatically links to your manuscript so that you can refer to it as you write. It's like JKR's Excel-like spreadsheet were she made her own plot grid to follow her Potter novels. Only Dabble's Plot Grid is merely for information. It would have been nice to click in any part of the Plot Grid and begin writing from there, but this is not possible. As a writer this kind of thing was the functionality I was looking for and out of your entire list I never found it. LivingWriter allows you to write from their plot grid and so does Novel Factory. Only I found there were too many clicks to get to do what I wanted to do and both of these were not as straight forward as I needed them to be so as to illuminate distractions when trying to work quickly and clearly, and none of the writing software out there gave me a clear Birdseye View of my novel. That is why I moved over to NovelPad; because it does everything I need it to do and then some. I can write from any scene, character or plot card and I can link everything together as I so wish and color code and tag to my hearts content where I can see my entire novel clearly illuminating that feeling of getting overwhelmed by very long documents. Lastly, the new updated Wavemaker and YWriter which were both mentioned a few times in other posts are absolutely awesome free writing apps that do much to assist writers by the way, but for my needs - as an author that writes the way I do with the needs I have - NovelPad just does it for me. My only wish with NovelPad is that Christian from NovelPad adds SCENES to the Insights Sort Feature so that I can sort and write from their Insights SCENES by PLOT cards which will help me that much more and which would give NovelPad Dabble's awesome plotting information functionality with the added benefit of actually being able to write directly from the scenes and plot cards which is something Dabble just can't do right now. I am eagerly waiting for NovelPad to add this one extra feature as it will enhance NovelPad's Plotting functionality greatly and it will be of much assistance, I'm sure, to many writers currently using NovelPad.

Nice review. I'm working with Quoll as I watch this. A couple notes: • You can (re) order your lists (eg Character) by click and dragging • When adding an ASSET, Quoll demands that you associate it with an icon (not sure if it needs to be a unique icon, but no icon templates seem to be included in the app). This is a wee bit frustrating and time consuming.

Regarding the shadiness of the open source apps: actually the fact that they are open source is what makes them transparent as opposite of shady. The code is open for anyone to see any "shady" things that might be hidden by propietary code. In that sense, you can actually feel safer when using FOSS than when using propietary software.
