Im nit a historian but to be fair MOST of the time the context is kinda important and it is kinda a we cant know especially sesne this was commom back then
I literally support lams for some reason 😭 my friends are like “Eww they were just best friends” but honestly the letters to eachother proved them wrong
Man imagine being a Historian and spending years researching about a historical figure who had a strong friendship with someone just for the internet to call you “Liar”
Alexander the Great & Hephaestion. Alexander had a closer bond with Hephaestion, his “childhood best friend”, as historians say, than his wife Roxanna, with whom he had a son with.
There is hope. More and more historians and archeologists are unafraid to call things as they really were. I'm not a historian but a good friend of many, and things are rapidly changing.
My history teacher had copies of Lauren’s and Hamiltons letters to each other and explained how they were just friends but someone pointed out the part where he (Hamilton) says “You should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent” did not sound very “just friends” to anyone so she said “Just put good friends on the exam even though we all probably know.” Here’s the letter if you were wondering: Cold in my professions, warm in my friendships, I wish, my Dear Laurens, it might be in my power, by action rather than words, to convince you that I love you. shall only tell you that 'till you bade us Adieu, I hardly knew the value you had taught my heart to set upon you. Indeed, my friend, it was not well done. You know the opinion I entertain of mankind, and how much it is my desire to preserve myself free from particular attachments, and to keep my happiness independent on the caprice of others. You should not have taken advantage of my sensibility to steal into my affections without my consent. But as you have done it and as we are generally indulgent to those we love, I shall not scruple to pardon the fraud you have committed, on condition that for my sake, if not for your own, you will always continue to merit the partiality, which you have so artfully instilled into me.
John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton: **literally exchanging love letters, calling each other "my dear Laurens" and "my dear boy", some letters having to be burned or cut because they were too explicit, Hamilton bragging about his pp to Laurens, saying "I love you" to each other, and Hamilton even saying Laurens 'stole into his affections'** Historians and history teachers: Ah yes, they were very close friends!
Remember all of the stories from our past that’s have been told - and the ones we have Found on our own - people lived in these moments and we would not be here, if it wasn’t for them. We have to pas on the torch of queer relationships in the past to the coming generations. Anything else is atrocious and deceitful, since such lies are robbing the past from the current and coming generations✨✨. I saw we speak up!☺️✨💖
My history class was joking about how we should watch Hamilton, and my teacher’s argument on why we wouldn’t was because it wasn’t really accurate because “it was more likely that Hamilton was having an affair with John Laurens than Angelica” and that shut everyone up real quick for some reason 💀
I'm doing classicist studies and I read a piece of the original Odyssey where Telemachus calls Pisistratus "the first in my heart". They knew each other just for weeks and Pisistratus already was the first person in Thelemachus' heart. Come on, tell me that was just friendship.
