The acting, the costuming, pacing, camera, all were very, very good. But the script/screenplay was not. They needn't have rewritten so much. It got in the way of my enjoying the movie as much as it otherwise deserved.
To choose Heston as Rochester is as believable as choosing joan fontaine as Jane in another movie. Their acting ability is ok, but their characters should not be so handsome!!! I love Charlotte Gainsborough as Jane, good actress, and Ciaran Hinds as Rochester (handsome but with heavy makeup).
interesting adaptation - I liked it. Thank you Capitolinattic for finding this. Not as rich as the BBC's 2006 high budget version which remains my favorite in terms af acting and script, but well done for early TV. Very interesting rearrangement of dialogue and scenes. Acting was good also - not like a later tv Westinghouse version with Kevin McCarthy which really missed the mark in my opinion.

You all are ignorants… the original soundtrack is composed by Dario Marianelli… a genius! His music is intelligent, romantic and oh so subtle. This is just a common and poor quality trailer…
Some commenters don't seem to be aware this is from a time when dramas like this were transmitted live on TV. That's why the camera work is stiff and you can hear background noise often. It's essentially filmed as a play with limited sets and no outdoor scenes, which is why the wedding isn't even in a church. Given these restrictions it's actually not bad.
Thank you for your defending of this version of Jane Eyre. This adaptation was barely an hour long. Why people expect so many of these versions to faithfully follow the written word, when time and budget alone dictates the need for deviations, astounds me. Even though I am not a fan of Charlton Heston, he certainly portrayed Mr. Rochester very well.
They took Jane's best lines and gave them to him. She's too old and too American but he is masterly and forceful in just the right way. Nice one Chuck.
7:02 - 7:06. Mrs. Fairfax to Sinclair's ice-skating, flowing Vivien Leigh take on Jane: "You're a person of refinement." Then they fly at each other as if falling in love. What a change in perspective... 🙃
Jane screaming “Who is it? Who is that person Grace Pool?” Is rather scary. Yet Rochester and Mrs Fairfax are good. It’s a pity that movie was so clipped and simplified
Interesting early television adaptation. They’d be limited to what they could do in the studio so they had to cut bits out. We shall see what happens in the rest of the parts…
Thank yur for publishing these lovely video. You took special care for the selected scenes and matching it with te Chopins melody. And leting some of the original audio.
The chopins melody fits the instensisy of the scenes with more drama. Mia and Fastbender my favorite couple. The put of the scenes and the direction of these film for me becomes in the best version until present.
_8:11__ - I know this is a playhouse adaptation, and it’s produced to blend as much content as possible into an hour time slot, but when Rochester grabbed her arm in that rough manner and forced her to repeat, “...a coal from the fire...” that was a total turnoff, and a serious mischaracterization of who “Jane Eyre” is. I had to regroup after seeing that before continuing. It’s those little things that count_
Never knew this version existed. It's awful! Her age just hits you- his all American looks, and accent contradict the whole story, I love Heston, but he doesn't fit! And the writing is so bad...why do this at all?
