I love the long book shelves under the windows. Could the other brown bookcase go by your desk at the other end to make it symmetrical? Close the gap and put the basket at the end of the otheright brown bookcase. Try grouping the tables randomly in 2, 3 and 4. Some kids do not like big groups and sitting close. You got this…plus you might put up anchor charts on the windows. 😉
This is such a late comment (considering this video was posted 10 months ago) that I don't know if you will ever see, but can you talk more about your classroom management? I just finished my first year and I feel like I relied wayyyy too heavily on my treasure box as a behavior motivation. I'd love to know what you do instead!
The students watching this:GUYS I FOUND MRS YOITUBE CHANNEL OMG others:ooooo a classroom set up this might be nice Btw I meant it cuz Students finding teachers RU-vid channels is kinda crazy Like I found my teachers RU-vid channel and I told everyone So that's what I meant😃😃😃
Thank you so much for sharing this challenge. The idea that teachers are able to complete their jobs with quality during contract hours is a farce. I am in year 10, and I rarely just work contract hours. It’s a shame that teachers aren’t treated as the professionals we are and adequately compensated.
Thank you!! I aspire to be able to only work my contract hours, but it’s so hard. I get so frustrated with people telling you to just do it, when it’s hard to do a really good job AND stick to contract time.
I’m sure this is obvious, but if you are planning for things that come up every year take your time the first year and then save those plans for next year. I also planned with my teammate. I made reading plans, she made math plans and then we both taught them and saved them. Of course, they were tweaked the next year, but it saved time in the long run. Same with slides saved in your computer. I saved mine month by month. Also, one thing I did for special days like holidays, was print copies for the next year and save them. That way, I always had something for an emergency sub to do if I got sick and had no plans.
Wow, Teaching has took a huge shit, since I've been in school. After watching this video I now understand why kids today can't write in cursive or write a correct paragraph. Wow, also since when did we have two recessed in 5th grade. Also, we really need to get back to basics when we come to education, no Chromebooks. More interaction with the teacher. From what I seen in this video, I see a young so called teacher that doesn't really what to do what she's doing. Wow.
my school year has been good so far. No complaints. I'm sorry to hear it's rough. I pray it gets better for you. Sending you positive vibes and lots of love @@Picklementary
@@Picklementarythankfully I’ve been ok. Missing your content. Wondering about how your room all came together and how it’s been. Miss ya girlie and praying ur good❤
You can use the extra rainbow cart as a STEAM cart and add different activities in each drawer - for example: Legos in 1 drawer. I saw that on Chelsie's channel- Yo It's Chels, she's a 3rd grade teacher. Her classroom set up videos are up. Love your Booklfix board - it inspired me to create an ARTFLIX board - I teach K-5 Elementary Art. 😊
For the Bookflix board, you could have them take a book "shelfie" - pictures of students with their favorite book or a student graffiti wall with one of those rolls of paper where they could write a quick sentence or two about the book they read or a favorite quote from a book, etc.
Student 10 drawer cart: construction paper, lined paper, printer paper, coloring sheet, early finishers, maybe whole group crayons and colored pencils (not sure how much 5th graders use those), Maybe extra copys of bookmarks or sheets to fun track their reading.
For the class jobs I would do Class Dojo and you can add points to their payment and then they have a way on there where you can cash in or redeem and it would just get deducted from their points . If you have any other questions lmk :)
There is no rule that says you must have all desks or all tables :) Some kids do better as an "island" and that's okay. Your room looks great. Very welcoming! When do you start school?
Ahhh LOVE this! My first classroom set up video I was contemplating what to do with my library. Absolutely love what you’re doing - thanks for sharing & inspiring 💞
You could put first 3 letters of author's last name and if you could come up with stickers for series. The kids could see to put all books with that sticker together.
Last year, my video file got corrupted for my last classroom setup video. I was so busy with school that I just let it go. Now that it's summer, I found time to remake the video. So here it is! The last part of LAST YEAR'S classroom setup (the one where I was building my new classroom from scratch)! If you enjoy this one, I'll have more current classroom setup videos for THIS YEAR coming soon! Thanks for watching! :)
A good literacy board I've used in 5th grade has genres and their meanings, and a space for children to put book recommendations. You could also put up posters of some authors. I've seen teachers display reading skills, or display the books they have read as a class. Having spellings up somewhere is always a good idea, but make sure you can swap them out as children learn them so don't staple them. You might not want to display students names and characteristics publicly. If anything, it might be distracting and they might not want it displayed. It's also such prime real estate. I would use them for anything that you want children to memorise, such as a cursive alphabet if some of your kids are still struggling with handwriting, a place-value chart i or two (in numerals and spelled out), fraction posters, a history timeline (always useful), skip counting numbers, maths synonyms for the four operations, etc. You could also put up a class motto. I kept books in tubs by subject and have selected kids hand them out. Often I'd make it a reward or give the jobs to kids who needed physical brain breaks. Requires some management at first but after a few weeks it worked well. Have fun this year. Thank you for the great videos.
I think you and I might be the same person. I love this video and agree 100% with everything you said. Especially that microphone. It’s only good for birthdays and then it can go back into its little case.
As for your long , narrow bulletin board, maybe use it for your school's behavior plan. I don't know if you teach or use cursive. I will this year since I'll be teaching Social Studies. Many primary sources in American history are written in cursive, so I see value in learning it. We study the western hemisphere, including the Declaration of Independence. Maybe you can put up the letters on that board?
My entire school has tables K-6th. There are maybe 2-3 dozen desks in the entire building. It was disconcerting when I taught 6th grade Math/Science/Social Studies the last 2 months of the 2021-2022. Last year, I taught 5th grade ELA. This year, I will teach Social Studies, too. We're departmentalized. We do use book bins. My school bought most of them, but I had some already, and bought some. We use a 3 ring notebooks which they keep in the bin. They keep all their work and curriculum pages in there. We use EL. It can be totally digital. The books we use are regular books instead of text books. They are kept on a communal shelf. They also keep 1-2 books for independent reading time.
2nd grade. I had tables last year but am trying desks this year. So much talking and lots of opportunities for distraction. For storage, I used tall square stacking bins from Dollar Tree. They had a design cut out of the sides. Each table had one that sat in the middle. It comfortably held 4 folders, 8 notebooks, and 4 Chromebooks with plenty of room left. Teach them to take care of the bin and keep it organized--It pays off. I replaced them mid-year, but they could have easily lasted all year. Pencil boxes stayed on the table, but just pushed to the edge. An easy solution would be to just have them hang their bookbag on the back of their chair. I always had bad luck with book bins being too full and falling over. I was interested in what could go in those elongated board spaces. Most photos of vintage classrooms show student artwork, the alphabet, or a number line in those spaces. I can't tell if it is true bulletin board material or chalk in your room. If it is chalk, then using chalk markers to add a mural would look awesome. The space is less than ideal but adds so much character to your room. Good luck!
I'm a first year 5th grade teacher but I was thinking about having the bulletin board in my library be kind of like a graffiti wall where students can write powerful quotes they've read. Of course it would have to be monitored in some way but I think it could be fun. Maybe I'll learn my lesson on that lol. I'm also going to have a word wall that students create the definitions and draw an example for our vocab words so they are more likely to use it
I think that’s a fun idea! I would just make sure to model expectations real well, but then make sure to remind them to use it - otherwise they won’t. But if so, that sounds awesome!! I like your vocab idea - we do word graffiti a lot, so that could be a fun place to display it. Good luck on your first year!!
When does school start there? I feel stressed because I just got to a new state and school starts early August. I feel like a new school since I'm doing 4th grade instead of being a resource teacher. I'm excited to watch your classroom transform! I would put art or an alphabet on the those little bulletin boards. I have a random thin one above my white board. Im.jealous of your space! A word wall sounds cool.
I did tables for years. I found some canvas seat back pockets on Etsy that were on clearance. I got 24 of them for like $70. The students stored most of their stuff in those and hardcover textbooks were stored on a bookshelf in the front of the room. I also used three drawer carts for a couple years to store their stuff.
Last year I moved after 8 years in the same school. I feel you when you said you felt homesick. I felt exactly the same last summer. And now I love my school, so it definitely does get better.
@@Picklementary same here! I went to get your teach on in Dallas for their national conference and I learned so much and can’t wait to implement what I’ve learned. I have about 4 and a half weeks left of summer so debating if I should take a mini vacation hbu?
I'm doing full community supplies with a classroom job of materials management team that pass them out and pick them up. You can also just store pencil boxes with the personal essentials on a shelf and they can bring them to their seat each day while the books and notebooks are passed out by table captain or whatever system you use. I am a big fan of tables - they make collaboration much easier and take away so much of the visual clutter.
Yeah! I still have table caddies, so I could use that, and have a supply job who refills them when needed. Do you ever have families who complain about community supplies?
@@Picklementary No, but I know some people in general don't love the idea. My everyday function isn't going to be hindered by a one off parent's opinion. My secondary reasoning, other than functionality, is that kids aren't great at being responsible for their personal items at all (3rd grade). If they are asked to put something away in their cubby, it doesn't always make it. If someone is coming around picking up the glue stick or the scissors, they are forced to handle it in that moment, locate it, and return it. I just think supplies are better taken care of that way.
