As a fan of comic art rarely see strips featuring CB radio as a subject, which is strange seeing its impact in the early 80s where everybody seemed to have a CB to communicate.

Hi Martin - how does this compare to the superstar 3900 (2023) i see you have both. Any noticiable difference in performance when power settings all equal? I belive the radios are very similar. I am considering a 3900 but thinking of keeping it standard (accepting i will miss put on the 555 etc) but would be nice to work the midblock QRP.

Hi thanks for the question, well both are good radios,both work fine, are both are similar, if you opened them up the boards are similar. Both CB radios are aesthetically pleasing too the eyes,, and both work, I also enjoyed using the radio's with 4 Watts & 12 Watts. I know that most people on CB radio are using amplifiers, And it's like the wild West out there. But it's fun building antennas and actually speaking to people on 4 watts. Or 12 Watts, anyway I'm hoping to put, More videos up soon. Thanks for watching cheers Martin 😁👋.

@@martindavies6640 Thanks for the reply. They are great looking radios. Yes I know what you mean about it being like the wild west out there. You can't compete when it comes to power so why bother is my view. Don't get me wrong I used to have amps and thought great I can be heard but then you get frustrated when you don't get heard and think more power the answer. Since then I've sold all my amps and just run radio power. As you say, all about the antenna and efficiency of your setup. I have just AM/FM radios at present and wondering whether I should get a SSB radio again. In the past I've had them but only held onto them for a few months before going back to basics rigs. I've had 6900/3900/DX 5000/Alinco dr135 and a president Lincoln 2 so tried a few lol. I guess I just like 4 watts AM/FM at present haha 😂 look forward to more videos in due course. 73s Ant

@martindavies6640
@martindavies6640 21 день назад
The anytone Ares 2 is a lovely radio, i own a cobra 148gtldx Mark 2 made in 1981, but it's over 41 year's old, And if you look on eBay they sell for ridiculously stupid prices, the Ares 2 is a modern take on a old classic it can cover from 24 MHz through to 29 MHz also CB radio, is stable so doesn't drift, there are many more positives about this radio, you can also buy it for under £200 pounds, unlike some old cobra 148gtldxes, that go from silly price's like £300 And upto £400 pounds, i rest my case.
@WillieJu
@WillieJu 22 дня назад
Thats very cool. So what wire did you use for the loop? looks like speaker twin flex or am I mistaken? How long did you have to make the 75 ohm coax to match a good swr?
@WillieJu

That Ares performs very well. I have the AT6666, but I think I bought the wrong anytone 😁. But I needed a smaller form factor for the vehicle, and it pushes about 50 watts on SSB.

Yes the radio works well, worth the money, i just like those radios that have the old school look, i also like running them on low power, i try to let the antenna do the the job, but too be honest it's the Ares 2 is nice to look at, my antenna is a bit close to the house, plus I'm inside the city of Swansea in a built up area, so the noise levels, not the best, but the radio work's well, thanks for your comments much appreciated.

Yes it's a lot of fun running qrp , low power. I have a lot of old school CB radios all have 4 watts out, some less, . But when the bands are open with sporadic e when the ionosphere refract those signals all you need is a good antenna with a bit of gain.. hopefully i will post more videos when there are better conditions on the CB radio. I'm not a RU-vidrs, just someone trying to promote CB radio, to those that think that its dead. In Swansea city where I am located there's around 20 odd CB breakers. They are all not on at the same time. But there is Life on here. Anyway thanks for your comments . Hopefully will post more videos soon cheers Martin 😁👋.

@@martindavies6640 yes I am having a bit of a clear out of older rigs myself. Couple of Uniden 400s up for sale. Yes a lot quieter by far, and being its a full wavelength, it's got a bit of gain, and directivity. It would work better if😂it were away from the house and up high. But it's doing a good job even low down, 😊. Been experimenting with some of my CB radios with standard 4 watts FM and 10 to 12 Watts ssb, using legal UK frequcies, to prove you don't need huge amounts of power to get out. I can turn the antenna by hand, And can see the difference with the signal's on the meter, it's got directivity. Now i need to add a reflector 😊. Hope you are well and your family. Cheers Martin 😁👋😁.

Its well worth making doesn't even need to be sky high, it'll work even at 10 feet to the base. Mine is near to the house 🏠, a bit close but still does the job, And its got a bit of gain,😊. Other call signs I later used were 163- DT-117 / 163-ST-117 / 163-AT-117, but my most used call sign was and still is 163-OP-100. In the 90's you'd often hear me DX'ing from on top of high ground by Felindre (until the DTI turned up one day). The last CB handle I ever used was "T.K." ...
