Solti conducts this as if he is in a hurry to get somewhere afterwards. I cannot otherwise understand how a musician of Solti's stature can rush through and thereby diminish this music depicting the end of life as a glorious sunset; I cannot believe that he would fail to apprehend its expansive nature.

Beautiful notes but dreadful diction. Couldn't understand the words at all. She swallowed the words for the sake of tonal purity. And why the hell is she reading it?? (Constantly glancing down, and page turning at 3:37).
Ya know, Rachmaninoff was connected enough to have found a good Broadway lyricist. If he'd done that, the words to his tune might be more compelling....
Surely this is one of the most challenging pieces ever written for a singer: nothing to "hide behind;" no "character" that takes the focus off the music. Just one person singing one syllable for 5 + minutes. Gotta be harder than singing an entire opera.
C'est tres beau mais il y a trop de petits problèmes de prononciation qui altèrent profondément l'interprétation de ce poème. C'est comme si l'on ignorait quelque chose qui résiste, or ça ne se peut, car on ne peut passer outre la matière d'une langue, fut- ce pour la bonne cause de la beauté musicale.
