Ready to joyfully and confidently embrace your gray hair?

I ditched the dye back in 2018, after 25+ years of coloring my hair. I had been thinking about quitting coloring for a long time, but it wasn't until I turned 49 that I decided enough was enough! I found embracing my gray hair to be incredibly liberating and fun, and I hope you will, too.

I just dyed my hair grey. Then let it grow out. Ta da!

I keep mine collarbone length. Every summer , I get tempted to cut it short and be done. But I love the ease of a quick updo or pony tail in the heat and humidity. It takes longer to shampoo , condition BUT , I don’t need to get up , shampoo and style every single morning. My hair is thick , wavy and it just will not cooperate with whatever dream styles I see with shorter hair. Plus I’m not that handy with or eager to spend time and energy styling every day. If things were different, I would cut it. But I Always end up growing out short styles and it’s a misery I don’t want to experience again.

I went cold turkey and encountered many negative remarks. Then I internalized them, felt like an ugly duckling for nearly three years. Pretty hair clips, gray scrunchies , brighter lipstick were my crutches. My hair is past my shoulders and I knew I didn’t want to deal with growing out a pixie. So I trimmed every 8 weeks, cried a little along the way. Had it not been for Sharon Danley Going Gray and Loving It group , I would never have made it. But it was worth every miserable moment. No more chemical dyes every three weeks , dry rough hair. It’s like Freedom and honestly , i think I look better with light silver hair. My husband loves it too.

Miserable today!!!! Been growing out my grey/silver for the past 3 months and I’ve been really proud of it!! Then yesterday my step family came round and felt the need to ask why I don’t go to the hairdressers and get it died grey if that’s what I aiming to do. Honestly I know I have demarcation and the died hair is brassy, but I’ve personally been happy because I thought it looked more like the sun had highlighted it. I know I have a long way to go but I did think I would get even a single compliment from someone who would say they could imagine what it’s going to look like when it’s fully grown out. The silver will suit my complexion so much more. Still it’s pulled me down quite a lot and I’m just going to pick myself up again and carry on ❤

I'm so sorry to hear that! I wish people wouldn't feel free to comment. Also, it's not easy to "dye your hair gray" unless you're a very light-haired person - and even then, it can cause serious damage. It's an ignorant comment. Keep carrying on - you can do this! We're here for you! xoxoxo

I needed to hear this especially the mortality topic. I am 43 and working on being ok with going grey. I've realized that I am so sad to give up my life as a brunette (and sometimes red head). I haven't come to terms with spending the second half of life with just one hair color - grey. Which I know technically isn't true but seems daunting.
@KatieGoesPlatinum
@KatieGoesPlatinum 20 часов назад
I know what you mean - I felt that way for so long. I was very invested in my green-eyed brunette identity. But to my surprise, I don't miss it! You might be surprised, too (but no pressure - everyone has to do this on their own time - or never - whatever works)! The nice thing is that your natural hair will probably change over time (if and when it loses pigment). And some people play wtih wash-out colors - I'll be doing some videos about that soon. You have lots of options!
@EmilyEmilyEmily01
@EmilyEmilyEmily01 День назад
After watching so many videos the past week I have decided to go for ashy brown and start cutting my hair a few inches each visit. I just can't commit to grey yet. I tried and hated how I looked but I can't afford to have what I really want - my natural dark hair. It's going to show grown within weeks and I can't commit to covering that either. So the lighter brown seems it may help me ease into the grey and when I feel 100% about it I can cut a pixie and it won't take much to get rid of the remaining brown. I appreciate how many videos are out there explaining options though

❤ I’m going to go with don’t chop it off. I also hate hair touching my face with a bob etc. I love seeing my long grey hair in all the colors and textures it chooses to do for me as it grows. And so many styling options. I don’t have the hang of what styles I could try or would work with my hair. Also I have chronic illnesses that sap my energy and cause pain. Making doing different styles draining or impossible. I’m considering getting a blow dryer. Joli recommended a good one recently. But I haven’t used heat or any styling tools in over 15 years. I do enjoy playing with my hair and I will braid sometimes. Mostly it’s up in a bun or just down and not done any specific style. I will be subscribing to see what you come up with and maybe you’ll inspire me. Your hair is beautiful and I think you will be sad if you cut it off. Plus you’ll be annoyed when you’re drinking your G&T and your hair keeps getting in your eyes or face. I’m happy you’re waiting before making a big decision. And if you cut please donate.

I have very curly hair which i feel is my identity. You're the second person I've watched that said the curls could become straighter. That really scares me the most. I'm going to try to go gray but I'm only 9 weeks out from my last color and don't want my curls to straighten. That would be a nightmare for me because that would be two major changes in my hair rather than just the graying. Don't know if I could deal with that😮

I did contact the company and haven't heard back yet. Purchased 24th, nothing since but it was a weekend. Hi Katie - new subscriber & I laughing out loud! You could be describing me and the conversation I have with my 'Type A' self OFTEN. My hair, too, needs the weight to keep it from flipping out at the bottom, and when I cut it even to chin length it becomes very wavy. My suggestion to you is to simply have the bottom 'yellowing' few inches cut off and leave it long.. I now air dry my hair for the reason and leave it long, or - my favorite - pull it back into an elegant low ponytail. Don't cut it 'short' - you look beautiful and a trim will take care of the yellowing ends. You will hate the fuss of short hair - trust me....much more upkeep and 'fuss'. Thanks for this and your 'product' video - great!

You shouldn't need purple shampoo when you first go gray. Purple shampoo's only purpose is to reduce yellow tones in gray hair and usually that builds up over time. Yes I do spend weeks talking myself in or out of cutting my long hair, I’m transitioning to grey and yo yo between carrying on or giving in to having colour. My hair was fairly long and I felt it looked a bit witch like so I’ve had it cut to shoulder length. It’s fine but I prefer long hair but I agree with all your negative points too! At the moment the hair on my crown is very white making my pink scalp more visible which I really don’t like. I’m trying to hang on to see what happens when I’m finally all grey!! Perhaps that will change. This is not an easy process and I keep wanting to give in to re colouring but I’m fed up the time and expense. I'm working up the courage to use overtone because I still have a lot of natural dark in my hair and I read one person say it lifted / lightened their natural dark (which I don't want). I'm also nervous to put anything on my grays because I don't want them to end up permanently stained and have to start over with the growing out process. Well I did grow my hair out and it was different tones of white and gray and it's very beautiful. But I had started dating somebody that was a little younger and he wanted me to dye my hair black and I regretted it . So I went and got something that what metal the color out. because it was too pronounced . It was actually like a chalky black. So I was hoping that I could get some of it removed. So instead of listening to the garbage that people tell you on Google and RU-vid all I did was go get my hair conditioner and I left it on for about 30 minutes and I did this every time I washed my hair and it would take a lot of the color out. I didn't use the shampoo all I did was use the hair conditioner and then I would rinse my hair and the color would come out. So now I'm at the color of a brown with a little bit of red highlights showing. But it's a whole lot better than pitch chalky black. My natural hair color before it turns gray wasn't off black which had a lot of brown and black into it. But I wish I had never touched my gray hair because it was beautiful. And I'm headed that way again I'm just going to let my hair grow out and then I'm going to cut it as I go . Because the sides of my hair is already showing my gray and it looks like a neon sign like I got a light over my head. The part that goes white ,is like it's a glistening white and it's so beautiful. So once I get my hair back to the color that I want nobody's going to ever talk to me about dying my hair again. I'm 69 years old when I was younger I used to dye my hair all the time and I would most the time have it burgundy and my grandson which he's now like 6 years old who said Mimi he said I love your hair when it was red. He didn't like my hair being Gray. It was a long time between seeing him I had been sick with covid pneumonia for a long long time and I didn't go around them very much and so I was very weak so when he did see me he saw me with the gray hair then my hair had grown out. Actually it's a good thing because you know my arms hurt and the sockets of my arms. My rotator cuff is not like it used to be so it hurts to put dye on my hair. Because I sprained my arms when I do the work for my hair. I tried to let somebody else do it for me but if they don't do it as good as I do. So I quit trying to ask for help. So the way to go is to go back gray and white. GOD KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING WHEN HE MADE MY HAIR COLOR AT THE END OF MY LIFE. MY HAIR IS SOFT EVEN IF IT IS GRAY . NIGHT COURSE HAIR LIKE THEY TALK ABOUT. I TAKE COLLAGEN. USED TO I CAN ONLY GET MY HAIR TO GROW IF I USED DYE ON MY HAIR. I THINK THAT'S THE REASON WHY I GOT INTO THE HABIT OF DYING MY HAIR WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. BUT IF YOU BUY A COLLAGEN AND IT HELPS YOUR SKIN IF YOUR FINGERNAILS YOUR TOENAILS YOUR HAIR YOUR COMPLEXION EVEN HELPS YOU TO LOSE WEIGHT.

So I think I'm going to keep my hair and throw away my boyfriend. I still attract those younger guys old enough to be my children. But they're mentality and their immaturity is just blows my mind. And I sure can't tolerate that. They get on my nerves. So the best way I can keep the young people away from me. Is to go back Gray. I love my hair. I would have a lifetime of my gray hair that I have all these fickle men. When my hair is dark and I can pass for 45 or 50. When the young guys asked me how old I am and I say I'm 69 years old I'll be 70 in April and they tell me I'm a liar. That pisses me off. How do you say so young. I don't know that answer. We just have good genes in my family. My oldest daughter just turned 50 years old. And forever everybody's always thought she was in her later twenties. Used to make her mad. I get to feeling the same way. The God has blessed that's all.

I understand remembering why we grow our hair out regardless of color. My hair has reached my mid back and the triangle look a sad style. I had my stylist cut into a U shape. I use professional shampoo which has a lilac tint. Pureology hydrating. So I don’t see any yellow. I installed a water filter from home depot to my shower head to keep water from depositing unwanted residue. I invested in Dyson airwrap and airstait which minimizes my need to heat style as much. I use a leave in conditioner, Pureology, heat protection for either blow dry or hot tools, yes, there is a difference. Most of these tip u got from the Blowout Professor, even though he would never suggest $600 hair tool. And hair oil is a necessity with my texture of hair. So I do understand how to take care of my gray hair and how to avoid yellowing - but even with my hair shower filter, protecting my hair from the sun and from heat damage, etc. I still ended up with some yellowing. 🤷‍♀️ All I can think is that I experimented too much with the Dyson Airwrap when I first got it (even though I use UV protectant and thermal protectant before it touches my hair, I use it on low heat or no heat, and on the lowest blow possible)- I had SO much trouble (and I still still have trouble) getting it to create lasting curls I think I just used it too much and left it on for too long. Lesson learned - my fine hair is very prone to yellowing, so I think I need to either forego any hot tools whatsoever (including the Airwrap), or I just need to be able to live with some yellowing. I’m leaning towards the latter ♥️

Can this help with the brassy blonde that is in the ends if my hair? I have recently committed to going gray and hate the old hairdye line. I have about 2 inches of gray now and I want to hang in there but the old dyed oart looks wierd. Help!!!!

It should help! Purple shampoo targets brassy yellow tones in blonde and gray hair :-). I find Bold Uniq to be especially strong but you might have to experiment to see which one is best for you. Just don't use it more than once a week.

Using young females makes it unnatural.

I'm over 70 and got 14 inches cut off my gray butt-length hair last year. I still regret doing it, now I just look like everyone else. I used to wear a long side braid and miss it. But I did donate my hair for cancer patient wigs so that was worth it.

That was very generous of you! Where did you donate it?

I love a layered bob. I have one, and it just falls into place. I've been told it makes me look younger than when I have long hair, if that matters.😅

I went cold turkey and cut off 8 inches to shoulder length and I am just going to continue cut ends til color is out. I also started a fun wig journey and love trying different colors, lengths and styles. I am now thinking of buzzing my hair.

I am just at the beginning of embracing my gray after dyeing my hair for 40+ years. I've gone nearly a year without the dye and I love the look of the gray in the front but not so sure about the back. It seems darker gray, but still kind of pretty. I think the only thing I'm concerned about is that my hair seems thinner than when it was a light/med brunette. I notice my scalp more. Might be just me. Right now I'm doing the cold turkey but my daughter is getting married in about 6 months and I want to look my best. Definitely planning a trip to my hair dresser soon.

Hi, Kathy! If it makes you feel better, a lot of us experience what i call the "baldness" illusion when we first go gray - where we notice our scalp more. I think it's an optical illusion as it seems to go away once the last of the dye is cut off. Here's a product i just discovered that can help fix that issue - it blends your hair with your scalp. The white version is best if your roots are white, but they also have a salt & pepper version: shrsl.com/4m13m Congratulations on your daughter's upcoming wedding! A lot of women who are transitioning cold turkey but have a big event will use root spray, wigs, or gray toppers to disguise their roots. Hope that helps!

I am a long time stylist-clear glossing natural or gray or white hair is also a wonderful way of enhancing and shining whatever natural color you have! No ammonia or harsh permanent chemicals. It also helps control frizz and adds an extra layer of gloss that lasts up to 4-5 weeks. Some added body too 😉

What is clear glossing?
@suzannemccoy1282
@suzannemccoy1282 8 дней назад
@@inesines227 It is a non-ammonia deposit of clear (no color tone) that lasts up to 5 weeks depending on which product is used and how often you wash it.

I’m not sure what you mean. Do you mean you don’t have any gray hair and you want it? Nobody is too young to be gray - I’ve met women have gotten gray hair as early as five years old, and I was probably fully gray by 30.
