I started to stop dying in November a few years ago. I wore a hat at work every day. If I went out anywhere I used a root touch up spray. I grew it until the end of March and my hairdresser cut it all off! I loved it. Now it’s past my shoulders and curly. Forget about the gray, now I’m told I’m too old to have long hair. Ha, I’m just fine at 68 with pure white hair.
I went cold turkey once I decided. It wasn’t always easy because as the dye washed out, it looked rusty and untidy and just awful but I had a supportive hairdresser who encouraged me to hang in there, not to bleach or do anything at all just hold out, so I wore hats and hairbands often. I began to finally know myself and I was surprised and happy and so glad I had been strong and brave enough to keep to my decision of going natural! The result was great, the process was not always smooth but it was the best decision I ever made!
I've been growing out my grey hair for a few yrs now. My former hair dresser had already told me i had a lot of white. My husband always liked grey hair and wanted me to stop coloring it. Well three yrs ago he became very I'll. I decided to let my hair go grey for him.. He passed away a year ago but I'm not coloring it anymore. Just cut about 8-10 inches off and will keep it long with some face framing layers. Something like yours. I'm 63 yrs old now but even with the gray hair people don't believe it. They think I'm 15 to 20 yrs younger. I guess all those yrs of taking care of the rest of me helped. Like skin and exercising. Love your channel please keep encouraging people. 🙂 Rose.

Two comebacks that have always worked for me, and can be used universally for any topic. If a rude QUESTION: “Why do you ask”? This throws people completely off and forces them to realize that their question was out of line. If a rude COMMENT: “Do you feel better now?” (This should always be said sweetly!). Neither way offers confrontation and usually nips the conversation in the bud.
I have chosen the cold turkey method. My hair reddish/brown, I had been coloring for over 20 years. I turned 60 this year and decided to stop coloring and it has been challenging at times. I wore a beanie for bit now I have more confidence and let my waist long tricolor hair aka calico color hair meet the world full on! I have gotten a few compliments which really helps a girl! I do look older and that's okay, I am.
I chose cold turkey starting in 2018, but not after contemplating and watching many videos for about a year before i made my decision. I loved the different variations of the grow out. It was like a natural bayolge. I never looked back. Katie's videos helped a great deal!!!❤ The only negative thing I noticed was other women my age or older (I'm now 66) was a feeling of maybe envy that I had the guts to do it and they were still coloring their damaged, thin hair. My hair is healthy fir the first time ever since ditching the dye.
I did the same. Just a few weeks ago I cut 8- 10 inches off. Still past my shoulders and feels much healthier. The faded fake color is gone, just my natural grey, silver and white streaks. Loving the freedom and the extra $ in my pocket not getting it colored.

I am 17 months in to my transition to gray. I have about 3 inches to go until finished. I chose the cold turkey method. I have long hair and chose to layer it a lot and that helped to speed it up some. In the beginning, I really didn’t have any issues with rude comments, recently though, I work in retail and had a customer tell me I would look great with dark black hair like my 20 year old co workers🤣, I said to her as politely as I could, when I was 20 my hair was that color! I am 51, have black and white hair and I am loving it, wish I would have never dyed in the first place!
After years of coloring my hair, as I was sitting yet again for another skunk line color I decided right then to shave my head. The freedom was fantastic. Yes my shaved head brought questions about my health. I simply and directly said "I was tired of coloring".
I went gray a couple of years ago. I’m a hairstylist/makeup artist of 40 years. I started my business when I was a kid. I started going gray as a teenager and I’ve been coloring my hair ever since. I bleached my level 3 hair to almost white then toned and it was damaged but looked fabulous. Then I got a burr up my butt and went dark again🙄 now today I’m growing my gray back out again. My hair is white on the sides and was still dark on top. Fat forward a year and a half later using the dye strip method and I’ve got about 4 inches of white hiding under the dye strip. And my top of the head is finally going white. So the dye strip is working fabulously. I figure it’ll take a couple of years but I also know I can help it along with bleach and lots of Olaplex. LOL but I’m loving my white hair. It’s stunning ( from random person). And my hubby loves my white hair.. Go figure lol
I had been growing out my gray hair and i really liked not having damaged hair from the dye. My mother hated my gray hair. She stayed onto me to dye it. She said my husband probably didn't want to be seen out with me looking old. I broke down an dyed it. I have regretted ever since. My husband told me he liked it gray. I am now starting over.
The negative comments are what's stopping me atm. I'm in my early 40s so don't have a lot of grey but am considering ditching the dye now so I never have a demarcation line. But I work in a very male dominated, stem, corporate field and since my kids are grtting older, I'm starting to climb the ladder. Even the women 20 years older than me are still dying their hair. I've outright been told grey hair isn't 'professional'. Ok, but nobody says that to the grey haired men I work with...
It's so frustrating, isn't it? I work with almost ALL men (in my day job) and all of them (from their 30s onward) feel free to go gray. But I'm the only woman in my company (over 30) who doesn't dye her hair. I think you'll find that going gray won't hurt you as much as we've been lead to believe - the biggest thing is to be confident and have style - those two things will make you look professional even if you don't dye your hair.
Over 5 years ago I went gray! A beautician I went to for years told me not to, at the time, my daughter was getting married & I’d look ugly in the pictures!! When I went to my daughter & asked her if it would bother her, she said I should do whatever I want! Needless to say, I never went back to that stylist, & have loved my long gray hair!! I’ve actually added purple ends to it!! I get compliments always!!! Old is just an attitude!! My hubby loves it too!!😊
I went cold turkey and encountered many negative remarks. Then I internalized them, felt like an ugly duckling for nearly three years. Pretty hair clips, gray scrunchies , brighter lipstick were my crutches. My hair is past my shoulders and I knew I didn’t want to deal with growing out a pixie. So I trimmed every 8 weeks, cried a little along the way. Had it not been for Sharon Danley Going Gray and Loving It group , I would never have made it. But it was worth every miserable moment. No more chemical dyes every three weeks , dry rough hair. It’s like Freedom and honestly , i think I look better with light silver hair. My husband loves it too.
I'm almost 6 months into my transition from dark brown to what is coming in as mostly white hair with a small number of naturally dark brown strands mixed in. I found Katie's online encouragements to be particularly important in educating me about my options and giving me the courage to go grey! I chose a method of increasingly lighter highlights that my hairdresser did for me about every 3 weeks. My primary goal was to avoid the skunk stripe so this method actually worked quite well. I honestly could not be happier with my hair and really love the color of my grey and how soft and healthy my hair fees now! Not having to color my roots every 2 weeks is absolutely liberating and feels great! I'm now 60 and wish I had done this at least 10 years ago!
Went cold turkey. Got nasty comments even from my husband. BUT I felt empowered and it was rewarding. No hours in the salon or huge bills just to see silver popping through two days later.
Great video! I started graying at 16 and dying my hair in my 20s. Decided in my late 40s to go cold turkey and have no regrets. Started in the spring and slicked it back or wore it up. I’ve gotten more compliments on my hair since going gray. Bonus you didn’t mention: huge money saver.

My co worker said “what are you 70?” I said 72. I expect to get negative comments but I am determined not to let others opinion deter me from my goal. I noticed the grays coming in underneath and I got a bit of anxiety. I’m trying to get through the different stages
I’m 35 years old and I stopped using dye about 2 1/2 years ago. I have small grey streaks all over my head and a strip on my left side. It’s tough sometimes. At times I want to go back to coloring my hair. Sometimes I think I look older than I am, sometimes I don’t like people looking at it. BUTTT I remind myself that I’m different. I doing this for me and that it’s who I am naturally.
I wanted to go gray at 50, but my family advised that I still looked like I was in my 30s so I should wait another five years. I took their advice, but I prepared. I switched from permanent hair dye to demi permanent. When all the permanent dye was gone. I stripped the demi permanent dye from my hair with vitamin C tabs a few times, then switched to temporary dye for a several months. My hair was very long so I chopped off 8". Voila. I was gray. Now, my hair is super long, and very fab. I get compliments when shopping, walking down the street, and from clients. People tell me it looks like I purposely dye my hair gray.

Loved your video!! I'm 61 yrs. old. I 've wanted to go gray 2 other times before now. But IT IS definitely my time! My husband just had a total knee replacement and his PT and surgeon just told him it COULD take a full year for a complete healing. He is still improving and life quality has improved already but I felt this "Healing" process time was perfect for me to transition in 12 mos. as well. I'm 3 months in and you hit it on the nose Katie!!! I'm excited about the revealing of the package of color and pattern God will show me in time. I have found it's not so much what people say to me anymore... it's more what they DON"T say. It's the stares or pauses that crack me up. You're right certain days are so much easier and I feel so much stronger and confident. But then and truly not often, I feel like I am really having a little struggle. But hey, even when my hair was dyed, cut and styled I'd have bad hair days. It's a process. It takes patience. And I am truly excited to find out more about myself during this new season in life. I’m 58 and am going cold turkey. I gradually darkened my dyed blond hair shade by shade darker to match my darker roots. Once grays started coming in I kept it blonde, because I thought that would make them less noticeable, but I am tied of coloring my hair and want my hair to be healthier. I had been dyeing my hair every 3-4 weeks since I was In my earlier 20s and used Sun-In spray before that. It has been 6 weeks since I last added color. Now I have dark roots(the darker dye faded☹️) with the silvery ones mixed in, there are several short ones, because I had plucked out grays that stuck out crazy before. My husband is supportive, so I am excited to see exactly what my hair pattern will be. I am also worried it will look old and bad, but I am hopeful I won’t give in and go back to coloring. I'm 44 but for different reasons people think I'm 10 years younger and they're shocked when i tell them that my eldest is 21. I'm tired of dying my hair but i dont know if I want to give that up just yet. I wish i kept my hair natural to begin with 😢
I understand! I wish I had kept my natural partly because I never got to enjoy the salt & pepper phase - I think it’s so beautiful now (but I didn’t when I was younger. Wish I’d known!)
My regret: not just going full on cold turkey. I went the medium turkey route and tried a form of double low-light gray blending. I guess I cannot really say it was a regret as I was able to share and teach others about the experience, but if I could go back I would not have spent the money or the regression time on my grow out on it. Also, as you well know, I am a huge proponent of protecting your growth and silvers from heat and sun damage. UV and Heat protection are a must for silver. I went gray cold turkey at 62 in 2020. I had medium brown dyed hair and I did almost go crazy till about month 5. With some great tips I bought a few classy hats for the winter and wore lipstick everyday because you look in the mirror and think 'who is that looking back at me!' I had a pixie so it was about 8 months until all the dyed hair was gone. Thankfully everyone I knew was supportive and I get more complements now than I ever did with dyed hair.
I have been gray for 14 years. The way I did it was sooo easy for me. First let me say that I have had long hair all my life and cutting it was not an option. The method I used was to let my roots grow out about two inches. If during this stage I had an event to go to I had a color spray powder that I would spray on my roots to disguise the grow. Once the roots grew the two inches the hairstylist gave me three very thick low lights, at the crown of my head, the same exact color of my hair. The placement was as follows: I part my hair in the middle, so she did one on each side, not symmetrically and one at the back of the part. In my case my hair was died raven black (Level 01) And that was it! Every time I needed a touch up the color went on to those three random low lights. The purpose of the low light strands was to cut the halo effect or skunk line. After a while the gray started taking over and the need for the low lights was over. I would say this took about 6-8 months. Getting a “dusting” trim every 2 months helps with the growth and maintaining a healthy head of hair. I did have a lot of crazy mild hairs that I could not tame but I just rolled with it. My husband and my best friend were my biggest cheerleaders. No one was rude except one person who already did not care for me anyway :). Throughout the process I had many complements from men and women but mostly from men. Another thing that was helpful was setting up a board on Pinterest with photos of women with long gray hair. As I transitioned I started to play with different eye shadows, lip colors and transitioned to a new wardrobe. There were a lot of positives about going gray and I have never looked back! Okay, so I'm in my 20s and want to grow out my natural color (about 15% gray) and I've been using henna for years. So my hair is very warm and coppery, and my natural color is very ashy and cool. I'm very nervous about the process because the contrast is to big. Any words of encouragement/advice? I'm nervous. 😅

My biggest concern is the texture change. I have fine soft curls and I've noticed that my Grey's are wirey and much more course. I find myself sometimes wanting to snip the corkscrews ends (hate those)! Will my grey take on my same curl pattern or will it be more wirey and its own, ugh, wildness?
I will be 52 this year and I've been dying my hair since my 20's. Since my 40's I needed to dye it every 4 weeks and even then after 3 weeks I was trying to cover the gray roots! I have no dyed my hair in 9 weeks and going cold turkey! I almost didn't take pictures for Mother's Day because of my ROOTS! ( but I did ) I am very white around my face so I've been purposely pinning my hair back to show my roots. I'd rather have people just know that YES I am growing my gray out.
I'm almost done with my transition. It's been 19 months. I love my hair and get compliments from complete strangers all the time. If you're on the fence, DO IT!
i cut all the dye off at 8 months i have struggled with the short hair not my salt and pepper which has grown out some now im loving it. wish i had blended the dyed ends instead ogg cutting my hair off but i made it im proud of myself. i wish someone would say something to me i have loads of comments i havent got to use darn it....
Hi Katie I went gray with your help! I’ve followed you for a year now ! I had long red dyed hair that was a real pain to cover. When I first went gray I chopped off 14 inches and had a horrible bob couldn’t handle the outgrowth. I lasted about 4 months and I did a short shavy pixie cut. I actually like my pixie but I have a tiny head and I don’t like the shape of it. It’s like an infants head that tiny so I’m now growing it out. I want to keep it short but need to make sure I like the shape of my head. I’m also lucky like you I have gorgeous white hair it’s super pretty. I’m Almost 60 so it’s perfect timing for me. Great video! -- I love my gray hair and the transition wasn't horrible, although it took a while. I just turned 60 and started going gray in my 30s. Started dying just the roots then progressed to full dye jobs and - man! -was I sick and tired of the money and time I was spending on this by my early-40s. I also felt that as my complexion changed with age, my original dark hair color started to look unnatural, even with good highlighting. I went a bit lighter, which looked better, but I started to feel strongly that it was about time to unchain and make a power stand for "the real." Interestingly, the only negative comments came from my parents and siblings when I announced. "You're giving up?" lol. But they compliment it now. I'm fortunate to have a true silver which looks pretty with what's left of the very dark hair. I kept my shoulder length during the transition and had my hairdresser pull gray streaks down from the roots, to help hide the transition line. It worked well for me. But 15 years ago, she had to order the gray color, since it wasn't popular enough to keep in-house. 😂

Do not forget about us men, some of us we go through precisely the same situation. With the pressure added that if you go grey from dyed hair people will then realise that your hair is dyed and there is still a taboo for men.
I am only 6 weeks grown out, so I really haven't felt the full effect. But the thing that bothers me the most is the texture. I've dyed my thirty two years but not all of it. Not the underneath part of it. So I know the right front section is white.The rest of the top of my hair is gray. And the back of my hair is still dark brown with a few strands of gray in it. The gray part is coarse and dry and the white part is fine, thin and fly away. I think this is a great time to go Gray.Because so many people are actually dying their hair gray, even young people. I'm 69 so I don't think people are gonna be shocked by my hair color. I am the only one of my sisters that still has dyed hair. Two of my sisters never dryed her hair.
I started to get gray when I was in my mid to late 30s. I'm 52 now. I've never dyed my hair, but I have experienced everything that you've shared here. People have made comments... It astounds me that they feel so emboldened to say mean things. My own mother told me I was ugly but that I had a great laugh and a good heart.... So I guess I got that going for me!! Anyway, I love the dea and suggestion to have a few witty come backs. I've pretty much just taken the hit and experienced tremendously low self-esteem for the last few years. I've been wanting my hair salt and pepper color forever. I just didn't have enough of it. I think it looks awesome and of course so does gray, silver and white. I had waist length hair and decided I wasn't going to cut it short. So 2 years ago I quit dyeing my hair. This past week I had my hair lady cut off like 7 inches it's now below my shoulders and I have about 4 inches left of the dyed hair. It looks awesome too me. People make comments about my hair "I just say that's your opinion and I don't care what you think."
I’m about to turn 50 this year, and I’m currently growing out a pixie cut. I’ve always colored my hair. I stopped coloring it in December 2023. My roots are coming in. They are not gray.. they are just lighter brown. I’m really digging the other gray streaks coming in. They are just coming in on the sides and front strands. I just hope my hair doesn’t grow in too thin or I’ll have to go back to being short. I’m hoping the silver looks good with my blue eyes. My face still looks really young. Nobody ever believes me when I say I’m turning 50.
Growing out isn't that difficult. I stopped colouring over 15 year's ago and cut my length off micro short after loss. It returned curly like it was as a child. During the COVID, it grew and I kept my mids and ends oiled. It's an empowering feeling to enter a meeting dressed down and hair wispy curls and salt and pepper. Another woman actually stopped colouring after we worked together for a couple years and she's beautiful. It elevates you ladies. I've mastered the side eye, can't believe you said that look that shuts people down. I've been going grey off and on since age 19. I now use to my advantage. I changed some makeup shades and it's true that some clothes might change too. I use both to pull together. Anyone can do it and don't be surprised if your skin actually appears medium over light. Make purple or blue shampoo your friends once a month and follow with a conditioning pack. Keep your scalp clean and ise products that work for you. I wash my hair once a week now. It wasn't until 2022 the FDA finally forced lead removed from hair dye.
62 originally, I let my gray grow with added baby highlights and lowlights, then stopped altogether 1 year ago. Now I'm thinking of starting the baby lights again because I'm not fond of the top bottom disconnect. I'm salt n pepper on top
I’ve never dyed my hair. At 50, I have greys coming in, but just enough to have a dozen thick, errant hairs that stick out like I’ve been electrocuted!! I might have to have it dyed grey at the salon. My mother went grey, and she looked fabulous! I subbed - good luck, everybody!
I started around September of this year! My hair was getting thinner and thinner too many hair coloring and perms! So I’m old enough to let it grow out any color it wants too…plus the price of salon visits kept climbing but my social security check doesn’t.. I made a decision I intend to stick with but I do wear ball caps a lot.. and now I have ventured into the wigs😁🥰and I’m actually loving that! So as my own hair changes I’m very happy in wigs and hats till I’m ready in a year to see what’s next 🥳🙏🥰🥳🥳
I didn't really go gray until I was 40. Before then I never colored it because I knew that someday I would have to color it and why should I start before then. I'm now in my mid 50's and I'm getting tired of the upkeep. I switched from salon to doing it at home maybe 8 years ago to save money and because it was annoying to have to commit to appointments ahead of time. For the past year or so i started fixating on my color because although it looked great, it also didn't look quite right with my skin tone. I also knew that at some point this dying was going to stop and I wanted to get to a shade that was as close as possible to my natural brown before then. Finally this past April I switched the color and I really love the new shade because it does look like my old color. So I decided this is my last color and I will go with it a little while longer. Well here I am, not even a year later and I'm already like, how long do I have to keep this up? I'm thinking that getting through the first six months might be easier if I start in the winter when I can keep a hat on if I want. So I"m like, maybe color it one last time for the holidays (or maybe not) and then be done, cold turkey. Or else wait another year. And waiting another year makes me just want to cry. So I guess I'm just about ready!
My oldest daughter grew her natural gray out about 3-4 years ago- she’s tall, slim and has long white hair that is stunning on her. I grew mine out probably 10+ years ago- it was long, and between the white and remaining dark hairs, it looked gray. Made me feel old. So then I went blonde, as the roots don’t show much that way. I have been coloring my hair since 7th grade ( color rinses) and permanent dye since high school . Natural color was brown with red highlights. I have had every “ natural” hair color and a few “ unnatural” colors. My favorite is red, but white roots on red looks bad. Going blonde again soon- no idea if I can let the gray grow out. I have been guessed younger, especially with red hair, never when I had it gray.but getting old enough now that I’m not going to be able to fool anyone. And I’m 76 1/2!
I was a redhead and began to dye it when the white hairs showed up more often. To transition, I got lots of blonde highlights and just grew it out from there with a demarcation line you could hardly see. The process was easy, and it turned out to be a cream-and-honey colour rather than white, but it took me almost a whole year to see that stranger in the mirror as me. I'm lucky that I don't live in the US so I was never insulted like people often are there, but there's a different problem: here most older people don't dye or have never dyed, and there's the fear of disappearing. I'm lucky in that my hair is an unusual colour (and was even complimented today!) but I do wish I'd never dyed and had seen the ever-changing process of red hair changing gradually to cream. FWIW I've never had to use special products - care is very easy.
I decided just over 2 years ago to find out what my authentic was. I grew up blonde and when I got older I colered it a lighter shade. for a couple of decades, so I had no idea. And working in health care I knew I didn't want to be the very elderly lady with fresh dyed hair. It has been a journey. I just stopped. Got a trim and some toner a few months in. Later I played with wash out dyes on my old ends- purple is a fantastic color. Eventually I chopped off the remaing ends into a just above my shoulders cut. It ended up being what I call salty caramel. I am dark blonde underneath it all. I often wish it was white all over. I love my hair and have no regrets. If I had known 10 years ago what my natural hair looked like, I would have done it then.

I do not have dyed hair and there are no videos on a slow natural transition, they are all about growing out died hair. However Ireally loved your advice in this video, especially the last point. Im 42 and get told I look late 20's so the looking older will be probably the hardest thing for me. I'm prepared to embrace it and super Excited to see my unique patern! Thank you ❤

I use to look always very young and people use to see me as a very young woman but now that I got 20% gray finally I think I look my age and people are treating me seriously now so I'm loving it haha. My focus is never been the looks but being fit and healthy as I can be to feel good.
New sub. Great video! Thank you! I stopped using dye in 2016. I'm now 59. It took me about 3 years with low lights to get to a decent look. The yellowing is an issue for sure and every now and again I will get it toned but I use L'oreal detox shampoo which helps a lot as well as a heat protectant. I have been told I have a young looking face, however with the silver hair, some people assume I'm older but look really good for my age. I also find that warmer skin tone/makeup makes one look younger and less washed out.
not all who do this grow out get pretty silver hair. some of us get weird stripey brown and gray hair. mine didnt turn out even or healthy. it was dry and had no body.
Great video. I went cold turkey in April this year after watching a lot of your previous videos. It was so good going into it with a lot of information. I have long hair that I don’t want to cut, so it’s going to be a long process. 😂 No skunk stripe, my biggest amount of white so far is from my temples, the rest is just sprinkled through. I have a supportive husband, family/friends and hair stylist. Best thing so far is just how much healthier my hair is now, oh and the money I’m saving by not colouring my hair. 😜 I live in south Australia and so far haven’t had any negative comments but I’m ready with some comebacks 😁 🩶
What I wish I had been prepared for was the possibility of postpartum depression after having a baby. Nobody warned me, nobody acted with trepidation (except my mom) when I got pregnant. It was all "Oh! Congratulations! Most wonderful day of my life" garbage, no reality. And my preparation for childbirth was too much on the airy fairy side. I used to read a birth magazine called Birth Issues, and there was no gritty truth in there. I complained to the mag afterward and sent in MY true, honest to god birth story for publication, and they rejected it, saying it would scare prospective mothers! Too right it will ! And it should!
I went cold turkey in 2019. I just kept it shoulder length as I could change my hairstyle putting it up or keeping it down depending on how I felt. My hair is now dark underneath with gray on top with many different shades in between, and I look at it has my own unique colour. The biggest surprise I got being gray was when someone on a train offered me their seat.( never happened before)😂
I cover the brassy brunette part of my hair with silver hair mud mixed with conditioner. I mix in a little black hair mud to get dark grey. Silver hair spray also covers the brassy brunette well. I only wash my wavy hair once a week so the effort is low. You can also use a little of the hair mud to darken - my hair is white in some places and I don't like that. I use Mofajang but I've also seen videos of AsIAm and Get Hued. Blue conditioner did nothing at all to tone. 10:43
Well, sadly, my hair is still dirty blonde. I've been peroxiding it to get it light enough to dye it grey, and I have a level 8 violet to use. It's still looking light ginger, but this morning I think I got it to nearly level 9 all over. (did the end half twice by itself) I have white wisps all around my hairline, and a few white strands throughout. I'd like my hair to match my platinum eyebrows, and it's nearly there. Gonna try Ion 8 Dusty Violet, but there's also an Ion 8 Ash Violet, and I wonder what the difference is. I also have the L'Oreal 8 silver... I actually like dying my hair (and dying other things), it's a hobby. While I was growing it out, for 2 years, I had to have a different hobby, and I did still play with colour shampoos and masks, and gloss. I would actually LOVE to go to hair dresser school. I find the science and art of it fascinating.
Katie thank you so much for your wonderful videos and for your honesty here. I am 3 months in to a grow out and I absolutely love the idea of going grey. I love the look of the women I see like you with beautiful long silver hair. I don't on most levels care if I look older and I love the idea of being part of a social movement and saving time and money at the salon. I personally am totally on board. I am even willing and prepared to deal with the potential effects on me in the dating world and the negative comments from family and friends (there are many). But I have a LOT of fear about how the perception of looking older could hurt me in my upcoming job search. I am a single mom of a very large family so the concern that the perception of being older could actually make it hard to support my family adequately is far more than a theoretical idea. I have been reading a lot about gendered agism and it is making me feel very unsettled about this process and wondering if I should wait. I don't know what I will do yet, but your videos are fantastic and so very helpful. I really do wish some of these concerns did not exist. I am hoping the world my granddaughters inherit will be different. But your candor and insight is appreciated.

They've done studies showing that if you dress well, have confidence, and have a good resume, your hair color won't matter. I went cold turkey last year (I’m waiting to change my account photo when my dye is completely gone, a “new me” reveal). I’ve only had a handful of rude or ignorant comments, including one from a little girl who was confused about my youthful, line-free face and asked me, “Are you an old grandma?” I thought that was humorous, because she wasn’t coming from a place of rudeness. Otherwise, I’ve had nothing but compliments! 😊
That’s wonderful! I love that comment from the little girl - kids are always so open ❤️. I hope that as more women let their hair go gray at a young age that the idea that only the very elderly can have gray hair will go away.

Well I did grow my hair out and it was different tones of white and gray and it's very beautiful. But I had started dating somebody that was a little younger and he wanted me to dye my hair black and I regretted it . So I went and got something that what metal the color out. because it was too pronounced . It was actually like a chalky black. So I was hoping that I could get some of it removed. So instead of listening to the garbage that people tell you on Google and RU-vid all I did was go get my hair conditioner and I left it on for about 30 minutes and I did this every time I washed my hair and it would take a lot of the color out. I didn't use the shampoo all I did was use the hair conditioner and then I would rinse my hair and the color would come out. So now I'm at the color of a brown with a little bit of red highlights showing. But it's a whole lot better than pitch chalky black. My natural hair color before it turns gray wasn't off black which had a lot of brown and black into it. But I wish I had never touched my gray hair because it was beautiful. And I'm headed that way again I'm just going to let my hair grow out and then I'm going to cut it as I go . Because the sides of my hair is already showing my gray and it looks like a neon sign like I got a light over my head. The part that goes white ,is like it's a glistening white and it's so beautiful. So once I get my hair back to the color that I want nobody's going to ever talk to me about dying my hair again. I'm 69 years old when I was younger I used to dye my hair all the time and I would most the time have it burgundy and my grandson which he's now like 6 years old who said Mimi he said I love your hair when it was red. He didn't like my hair being Gray. It was a long time between seeing him I had been sick with covid pneumonia for a long long time and I didn't go around them very much and so I was very weak so when he did see me he saw me with the gray hair then my hair had grown out. Actually it's a good thing because you know my arms hurt and the sockets of my arms. My rotator cuff is not like it used to be so it hurts to put dye on my hair. Because I sprained my arms when I do the work for my hair. I tried to let somebody else do it for me but if they don't do it as good as I do. So I quit trying to ask for help. So I think I'm going to keep my hair and throw away my boyfriend. I still attract those younger guys old enough to be my children. But they're mentality and their immaturity is just blows my mind. And I sure can't tolerate that. They get on my nerves. So the best way I can keep the young people away from me. Is to go back Gray. I love my hair. I would have a lifetime of my gray hair that I have all these fickle men. When my hair is dark and I can pass for 45 or 50. When the young guys asked me how old I am and I say I'm 69 years old I'll be 70 in April and they tell me I'm a liar. That pisses me off. How do you say so young. I don't know that answer. My stylist at the time, who I had gone to for many years, said "You know this is going to age you dramatically, right? The only way to transition is to go blonde" so I took his advice and passionately hated the blonde. Having red/brown hair, it was severely damaged from the lightening process and when the silver and dark roots started to show it was just as bad as letting the grey come in. I went back and only then learned the term "a grow out" so he added a bunch of low-lights which finally helped. (Note: I no longer see that stylist.) It was still shorter than at any other point in my life, but then came the pandemic and I grew it out in peace! Now, with all the colors in my hair from white, silver, various shades of grey, and the red and brown, people ask where I am having my hair color done. ha!
I really hate when stylists have that attitude. (Mine did too, and it took me a little while to decide not to go to her anymore). I’m so glad that you got through all that and that you love your new hair! ♥️♥️
My hairdresser insist I go grey as coloring was getting so difficult for a variety of reasons. While it is a pretty color on its own, it makes me look much older. It is blue grey in clumps and looks maw-maw. I have always been one who people thought were 15 years younger than my actual age. Now everyone thinks I look 2 to 5 years older. I hate it! I find only people somewhat older than me compliment it. Several friends who I trust tell me it makes me look substantially older. Now I have to figure out what color to go to to get back to hair color. Now matter what everyone says, it makes you look older even if it is a pretty color of grey. Don’t do it!
I have attempted several times to just let my natural hair grow out but i always end up dying my roots because of the "inbetween phase". I'm 33. Started seing greys at age 27. I wish I never dyed my hair 😅
I decided to allow myself to go natural after years of coloring blonde. My hairdresser promised to help me but what she did rather than coloring the roots she went through and highlighted it to its last strand! I’m blonder than before! 🙄 She told me I had to go back next month for more highlights and a Botox treatment. 😳 So when does this bring in my natural hair? I think I will just cancel for next month and just wait it out for a bit or find someone who is more sympathetic to my needs. I really think she is worried about her monthly income from me diminishing and well that’s just sad.

I decided to go gray because my friends were gray and I was tired of dyeing my hair. It took 10 months to grow out the dye. I went to the hairdresser more often for haircuts. Before doing this I used lighter and lighter hair dye. Now that it's completely grown out and there's no dye in my hair--I am thinking of going back to the dye. I am just not ready. I've never been really fond of grey hair.
I wanted to go gray, so I finally grew my hair out and now all the dye is out and I’m not gray I just have one small streak of silver. I don’t feel right when so many women friends are really gray or white. After my husband passed I went reddish brown then by accident i turned my hair lighter so I went all out and became a very light blonde or sometimes gray depending on toner. I can’t afford salons so I do it all myself. During Covid I let it grow and finally it’s natural but it looks brown and mousy to me. I have a bad shoulder that gives me a fit doing anything to the back. I tried to get my son to help cut and once bleach the back but he missed spots. I’m 81 and think I should be gray.

i went naturally at age 50, kept it long and just delt with it only problem is the front is spotty white and back is salt and pepper. i dont like the white parts but nothing i can do i guess.

I wish I had enough hair to go gray 😢 I wouldn't mind comments about my gray hair, it would anyway be better than : "what did you do to your hair ?" I just survived a bad covid. Hopefully, my hair will regrow despite an androgenic alopecia + a telogen effluvium post covid. Meanwhile, I'm saving for a wig (perhaps for a grey one 😂) Going gray isn't easy, going bald is quite depressing. Stay positive !

I'm 44 1/2 and i dyed my hair 2 weeks ago (a honey blonde) but I feel that i need to stop dying my hair (I've been dying my hair since the age of 14) so i think now is the time to stop. I hope I'm able to hold out.
Best of luck to you! Luckily, blonde hair is easier to transition than dark brunette hair is (gray hair blends better with blonde hair). So you should have an easy time of it. If you find yourself having a wobble, go onto my blog or Instagram, and look at photos of other women who’ve done this. It makes it easier if you can see the finish line. ♥️
I am going to a party tomorrow and I’m 11 weeks in. I look awful. Eeeek! I actually more nervous about the men seeing me than the women. I know the women will be supportive and don’t care. I feel like the men will be horrified.
Actually, I think the reverse might happen. In my experience, men are MUCH more supportive than our female friends during our gray hair transition. . I nd support .I went grey 2 yrs ago. I hd nò neg comments frm anyone I was Gung ho to do it. My thick curly auburn hair grew in white fine straight & thin. I look horrible! I mourn my thick hair. I can't do anything w the hair I have now. I deeply regret going grey I look terrible! Evn if I dye it it will still be fine thin & straight. I wasn't happy about how colors I used to wear look awful on me. Whole thing ws a disaster.I wish I cld go back.in time or find some way to fix it. I've thght of buying wigs. Dnt mean 2 b a " Debby Downer" but there must b other women this happened to. Its actually affected my confidence and mental health. I started going gray by Dye strip method last Feb. I got inpatient with this and went to my dark brown hair color lifted. OMG I am blonde now . my hair is gray or white underneath on my sides now and I have not colored my hair since July. My hair is so damaged I bought a wig. Hated it. So now I am just conditioning it and letting it grow out cold turkey...Help!
I"m so sorry to hear that. Lifting color can be very damaging on dark hair. If you hate wearing a wig, can you try to blend the gray with the dyed by using root sprays, powders, etc. That helps some women. Best of luck to you!

It grows out of my head this way - which is a miracle, because if you look at my earliest videos, you can see how dull, damaged, thin, and frizzy my dyed hair was after 25 years of dyeing. I feel really lucky to have healthy & shiny hair again. I'd kill my husband if he ever said that 🤣 I went cold turkey because I watched my mother and aunts literally go bald because they refused to stop dying. My only real issue has been trying to figure out how to take care of my curls now that they are so much finer. 😆

Maybe people could look at family to see what theirs might look like. If I go gray like my mom, it will be salt and pepper and eventually a silvery white all over. If I'm like my dad's side, I won't go gray. He just passed at 83 with dark hair, too sick to color it so I know he's like his mom. And I have another suggestion. If you have a day where you can't deal with your gray, maybe try wearing a colorful scarf as a headband, a la Clara Bow or Gloria Swanson. When I lose the red-gold tone of my hair, it's going to be jarring because I have a peach-yellow undertone and I look best in fall colors. I'm probably going to want color near my face. I do that now if I have a curls-out-of-whack or greasy roots day. Scarf or headband to the rescue!
You might be surprised and find that Mother Nature has given you the exact shade of gray that looks best with your skin tone. My Mom was a natural redhead with a peach-yellow undertone, and her gray hair is warmer than mine - I call it cinnamon-sugar. It looks great with her skin tone. I hope the same happens to you.
