During our union, Eritreans were significant contributors to Ethiopia, holding key positions as decision-makers, high-level scholars, prominent figures, and influential business owners. However, the fight alongside other rebels, with support from Western superpowers and Arab countries, weakened Ethiopia internally, allowing us to gain advantage and eventually detach from the country. We separated from Ethiopia, taking with us the ports of Assab, Massawa, and the Dahlak Archipelago, leaving Ethiopia landlocked and isolated from crucial sea trade routes. Following independence, we entered another conflict with Ethiopia over Badme and Shiraro. Despite initial military gains, international decisions awarded these regions to Eritrea, but we remained in a state of "no war, no peace" for over 30 years. What have we truly gained from this prolonged strife? Historically, Djibouti, a small province with a Red Sea port crucial for Ethiopia, departed with the assistance of European powers, particularly France. Similar separations occurred with Somalia, Kenya, Yemen, and Sudan, all claiming Red Sea access. Today, Djibouti hosts military bases from Western superpowers, monitoring Ethiopia and the surrounding regions. When Western powers discuss Africa, their veiled references to poverty, backwardness, internal conflicts, and famine often point towards Ethiopia. Meanwhile, Djibouti thrives on income from renting its Red Sea ports to Ethiopia, relying heavily on resources from their roots in Ethiopia. This situation is unsustainable. Ethiopia, encircled and landlocked, is stifled. The natural roots and resources of our neighboring countries, including Eritrea and Djibouti, are intrinsically tied to Ethiopia. If these roots are harmed, the entire region suffers. Ethiopia deserves access to the Red Sea-not out of generosity, but as a matter of natural right and mutual survival. The Red Sea is a shared natural resource, not a private entitlement of a few small coastal states. We urge you to reconsider the current dynamics and address these natural and historical realities. For the safety, security, and flourishing economy of the region, we must acknowledge and respect our origins. A stable, interconnected region benefits all, fostering peace, economic growth, and shared prosperity.
