Good choices. My set up is similar. I use my Super Bolt V2 as a clean boost that gets gritty if you really dig in. Then I'll use my lightspeed after at 18v to give it a unity crunch tone. I swear, that greer pedal can do anything you need it to. Instead of a kilt I use a Jonasus to help sculpt 2 different lead tones.
all you need for effects is a decent overdrive, delay reverb and chorus pedal, or a decent multi effect unit, with these you can sound good, over the years I've seen too much focus on gear ( myself included), I have a mesa, vox, Jackson and fender amp, with my helix I can get all the sounds I need
nice vids! do you tweak the output / mix volume in the DH preset or you leave it that way and no tweaking anything in the preset ? cause the volume is so small
This is my always on pedal. I set all the knobs around noon and then turn the guitar volume down as even at noon it boosts a lot. I can then decrease the volume / increase the gain as required. It just adds sparkle to the sound and dirt if I need it. It also stacks really well with other pedals. You can also set it more for unity with volume and gain at around 9 O'clock and that works well too. I have a few expensive pedals on my board as well and this holds its own, and if it breaks I can just go and buy another cheaply. I think it's more of a Vemuram Jan Ray clone than a Timmy, but I've not played either of those pedals so don't know for sure. For solo boosts you want a bit of a mid-push. This pedal is totally transparent so more of an always on in my mind. Great pedal, especially for the price.
Good tone is where you make it. Our gear should not define us (this is the job for our music). Making music is not a contest. No one ever walked out because "that guitar player is not using a tube amp". No one ever said " That guitar player is hot , i bet he rolls tube , i should marry him . All this stuff CAN get in the way of your job , which should be making great music . The good ole days are now . Be nice
Hey MD - i just put a CPS on a li ion battery powered mini od board . this is a scrap wood board i run in the fx loop of the nux mg30- so much fun ! pure sky i am just testing it out - i just got it havent used it yet and i am sure i am wrong - as i always am - i call it kay - line- just like nucks i say new ex but whats the fun in that . the overdrive rabbit hole ! so much fun... i did fuzz , i did distortion , i did boost now lets do OD ... there is 3 pedals on this drive board , the last is something special with an awful name a hoochee mamma which is a clone of a clark gainster that uses all old tube amp parts - carbon comp resistors , paper in oil capacitors , but the topology is op amp LF353 pushing asym diode clippers . the hoochee mamma does not have the TS honk , but i would describe it as phat , it is THE best performing od i ever played thru - of its type which i would say is the typical od that gets REALLY dirty but can clean up and boost - its more of a transparent type but it gets nutty with the dirt . the first pedal , well i am waiting on those parts to arrive here more than likely friday . it will be a dual pedal with a non-bypass able jfet iput buffer . one side is a zvex SHO , the other side is a COT50 . now the SHO i built to try it out as there is a lot of folks saying great things . i was going to use it set half or less to compensate for switching off to single coil guitar when i had set up all my patches on my nuxmg 30 using a humbucker guitar . i switched to a strat and all the tone was gone . i had read the sho described as bright and glassy. when its set low it just boosts , but the more you go the more character it injects . i really like what the sho does , it doesnt remove the strat thing -ya know a strat set on 2 or 4 has this thing , they may call t spank quack , etc , but a lot of pedals kill this . this emphasizes that . this first pedal second circuit is the cot 50 . its a lovepedal mod on a electra distortion - but dont let this put you off it, its a GREAT circuit .now i have to say last night i went thru a huge pile of overdrives with the strat and gee - that cot 50 is such an amazing circuit . its not a high gain monster . this is not for enter sandpit . at most its tame ac dc lvl of dirt . i do not play covers so much but these references are popular enough to use as reference, forgive me. with these first two if you tae it easy on the gain knob, your guitars natural tone is left unmolested . i am going to try to keep the caline in the middle . now i have another board i am using now yu can hear that one - its an ep booster , a benson preamp , and a revg3 . this is a nice sounding versatile board , the g3 has an "anger" toggle i leave it shut off as i am not angry so much . keep in mind i am using this in the effects loop of the nuxmg30 , i use custom IR and patches with amp models that are dirty . i dont use any of the nux dirt boxs when i use this inline tho . its just nice for me to simply be able to rutn them on and off in stages , combine them for different effects . the issue with the first board is the benson preamp changes the tonality of the guitat too much for my current taste . when i was a younger player i didnt mind that so much . i am playing more cleanish stuff lately , i mean thats been something i have allways tried to do . getting great tone as opposed to good tone takes effort , as i am sure you are aware . i may swap something out on the middle position of the first board and get rid of the besnon. i know a bad monkey would work or a bss sd1 but i cant do that ... that would be embarrassing. all the best pal . ps check out " 607 " on my channel to hear the rig my wife and i built the battery powered pa !
Honestly, drenching everything in reverb is not the way to be heard, you get lost in the mix. Unless it is an arrangement device to get a specific sound... otherwise you just put yourself in the sonic background.
Did the same thing a few months ago. I watched music is win video where he shoots them out and I am now hooked. I stack mine with a DS1 and it sounds pretty good. I am worried that my 25 dollar pedal will fail but at the price who cares. My gain control works fine. I think the wish stuff is very hit-or-miss.
Don't mix your videos down using your studio monitors. You're barely audible bro. I've been watching RU-vid videos all night no problem, so it's not on my side.
@@michaeldrawdy22 I listened to "Starting Worship Electric Guitar" and it's a little bit better, but still low. Listen to the volume level of, say, an official Hillsong video and try to match that.
Along side having fun and not getting frustrated, one of the biggest things that comes with not practicing enough is that you aren't able to focus on worship. I catch myself doing this even when I am fully prepared. Sometimes if I riff is too complicated or it takes away too much focus from God, I'll cut it or rework it. Praising God is the most important thing in all of this! Thanks for the video! Lots of great points and were all things I struggled with when I was getting started as a lead guitarist. Being able to play lead guitar is such a gift and honor and I'm so thankful all the other guitars out there. 😎
The "Worship Power chords" are just inversions and you can just link them all together with the CAGED system. In my opinion and what helped me personally was just really learning music theory and ear training. It just helps put everything together and really understand Why you are playing what your playing. Also it helps knowing so you really don't have to think so hard what to play and just focus on worshiping Jesus. Love the video BTW!!
When I started playing, I had no idea on gear or on what to get. My friend recommended the pod go because of its great price and sound quality. Something I recommend to any beginner
Great video and great advice. I really relate to the pedalboard building point. When I was younger, I bought so many different pedals that were complete crap and didn't take me to where I needed and wanted to go with my sound. I have since learned to do so much research on pedals before you buy it. For instance, what are the pros and cons of this pedal and do I really need this to get the sound that I want?
Informative thankyou especially your last comment!!, let's be honest with today's worship music, it's so polluted with reverb that it really doesn't make a difference what you play through IMHO with 40 years of performance experience
mistake #6 - thinking there is a god to play your music to. As an ex-worship guitar player for one of the most prominent churches back in the day, I'm gonna let the cat out of the bag, you're playing for and gaining the worship of people. Yes, this is a bit of a troll, but I think the cognitive dissonance of wanting to be a rock star and "playing for Jesus" can mess people up and by proxy, mess with people in the congregation. If you play music in church, you know this struggle. So even if you dismiss my 1st part, and there really is a god, your 1st "mistake" right right sizing your ego. As one who also ran monitors for many big name Christian acts, I can tell you guitar player ego and pride - just around their gear and all the cool stuff they could do was all too, often very off putting.
Why are you letting people influence your belief in God because they acted stupid? That makes zero sense. Humans, yes even Christians, are very flawed and that's why we need a savior. Go read the word and ask God to show himself to you. I know HE will. Don't let people sway you from salvation. This is not something you want to gamble with. Eternity is real. Whether people believe it or not.
@@cour1988 not sure how you interpreted what I said to come up with a inaccurate story around how and why I dropped my faith, but it had little to do with church & it’s people. Sure there’s plenty of hypocrisy and too many variations of Christian belief held by every adherent, but my leaving Christianity was way more wholistic. Simply telling me to read the Bible and pray is woefully way past where I’ve already journeyed for years my friend. And to then possibly retort “well just keep doing it, I know God will eventually do something…” would just fall on deaf ears. So I guess I’ve just been given up to a reprobate heart…
Hey guys reading these comments I got to say, I got what @ardbegthequestion said. Tbh the most things I deal with in my walk with God are Christian people. But I just remember that it’s not the people I trust or put my faith in anyways. But thank you guys for checking out the video. Hope I can help in anyway I can
@@ardbegthequestion It just sounded like you stated there's no god and then went on to say how people are trying to be Rockstars so I assumed that had something to do with your disgust with Christianity. Sorry if I read that wrong. I play in a pretty small church. Few hundred people. I play to serve them. To help in whatever way I can so they can put aside the crap they have been dealing with all week to hopefully get refreshed so they can face the next week with His help. In the world we live in it's a constant barrage of information every day. The stress and anxiety levels of even small children is completely through the roof compared to how I grew up. I'm not old. Millennial. Anyway I genuinely hope He finds you again. Most of the time we don't find Him. He finds us. I know you said I'm woefully off and you journeyed through this already but He won't give up on you. Ever.
@@cour1988 - Well I specifically stated that this was a bit of a troll, but I hear you. Church is one of the only things going these days that provide community, accountability and a cohesive moral structure. I can appreciate that and how its helped humanity along. I just cannot play church when, ontologically I no longer have good reasons to believe in the spiritual realm. Just a question for you to consider. Not sure if your a parent or not, if so, this will probably be easier to step into. Imagine being a father and your kid struggles for years with your relationship. Eventually, your lack of engagement of meeting that kid where he was at and providing what he needed meant that he moved on. He moved out of the house and found friendship and fatherly love outside of what you were able to give. He stayed open to the idea of you being a part of his life again, but you still never call, write him a letter, but sometimes communicate through others that you love him so much. You don't pick up the phone or open the door when the kid decides against his better judgement and countless disappointments to make a first move. Why would one decidedly make space for this father? He clearly & demonstrably doesn't care. Now this is just the emotional appeal. And like I stated, this is just one of many problems the make the Yahweh character an incoherent concept. So, all this being said, I can again, hear your heart and understand where you are coming from, but I honestly would just say in reverse, maybe my story and breaking in this little bubble on the internet may be a divergence on your journey and wrestle with what is true.
Loving the pedal advice. Fortunately for me I'm a research NUT when it comes to pedal selection! There's a lot of good stuff out there, I'd say the two pedals I use the most are a tube screamer/overdrive and a reverb. My next most used is delay. Learning how these pedals react to your play style and guitar will take you SOOOOOO far on it's own. After that, I'd get a compressor to even out your volume (it brings down the volume of your strumming and brings up your single notes) also a good amp simulation pedal if you're plugged into a PA system. Remember, your amp is a part of your guitars sound!
Wow what a great video, with great advice. Your last sentence about the guitarist presence was probably the most valuable to me. Many time we as guitarists don't value or realize that. Thanks, a lot, you really did an amazing job.
Kinda confused on your pedalboard point. Are you saying that people buy pedals that don’t fit the p&w sound? Therefore they get left in the closet? Or they buy knockoff pedals that don’t sound good?
That last one. Or let’s say looking for drives, in your head your looking for a blues breaker style pedal but don’t know that there are different OD circuits. You might spend a lot of money trying to find that and having drive pedals you do not use stacking up and frustrated because you can’t find the sound you want. I’ll make a short and post it to better explain!
This was a great video with great advice. The points made about the pedalboard were on point! I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. Thanks for doing what you do 😀😀.
