Nicely done video! I love your rig. Mine's nearly the same but with Smallrig parts. Mine doesn't use rails but still uses a v-mount battery. Happy filming!
How is that third party mic barrel? I’m interested but I honestly don’t want to break off Sony’s since it’s still working. It’s not sturdy though as everyone knows. Is that a lot better than the Sony’s?
Great question! My native Sony mic holder was still very much intact, there are two screws that hold on that original barrel that can be removed with an allen key. This new, third party holder then slots in and use those existing mounting points. So no permanent modifications are necessary! Is this mic holder better than Sony's? Aesthetically, not really. The finish is a little rough, but I find the FUNCTION of it to be much better than Sony's. The elastic bands allow it to fit a wider range of mics, and act as an isolator to minimize handling noise that might be transferred to the mic.
Thanks for checking out the vid! You've got options with this cage! It comes in three pieces that can all lock in together around the camera. I leave the top plate off of the cage on my rig, which leaves the MI shoe and the two screws next to it free for the XLR top handle or a Sony MI mic. If you don't want to use the MI shoe, you can install the included top plate and it will give you a Falcam F22 rail on top for a top handle!
Troy this is a really dumb question, so I hope it's okay to ask this here. At 2:31 and other points, your 'apple-styled' text pops up as white on a white background, but shows up so well and looks really professional. When I do this it looks plain, basic and blends into the background. Is this a particular style of dropshadow FX you're using? Sorry if this is obvious or a pain when you're trying to talk about camera comparisons. It just really stuck out to me 😅
Lol, I appreciate that you appreciate the graphics :) Thanks Dave! Not a dumb question at all! I don't know that there is a specific type of drop shadow that would work better than another, but I can tell you how I did my graphics! I use MotionVFX for everything! RU-vid, commercial work, you name it! The pack I use on my YT channel is "mKeynote" - I drag and drop the animated text graphics into my Resolve timeline and what you see in my video is what you get! (font, motion, drop shadow, everything!) I'll link it below for you to check out for yourself! mvfx.co/TroyMairs
@@TroyMairs This was such a helpful reply! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain and link resources. Just had a look and installing now to check it out. Will keep an eye out for your future videos too! Thanks again
@@enriquefernandezlatorre1079 Unfortunately, I think you've got the newer OS! A few months after this video went live they rolled out a new operating system that really changed the interface. I haven't used it myself yet, sounds like you're not a fan of it? Any particular reason?
Was the wired audio dropout that happened to you via XLR? and if not, how much of a difference will it make in terms of audio quality if I were to use an XLR and a recorder like the Zoom H4n pro with this mic
@@YosefRaffah I believe my dropout experience came in the form of the wireless transmisson, and not in the actual recording from the mic. So directly inputting the feed into a recorded through XLR should bypass that issue!
My biggest draw back is the lowlight capabilities of the s5 ii (x). Im a documentary filmmaker and want to be able to shoot in any situation and tell a story (also my main freelance work is where I dont have control over the light) , the a7s III is a little above my budget, in NL (Where im from) they are 4200 euros which is 4500 US dollars. That is not worth the low light performance for me, so I gravitated towards the A7 IV or the the s5 II (X). What is your opinion about the low light performace of the s5 ii (X), do you think it holds up?
@@OffTheHorizon I'd expect both bodies to perform very similarly in low light, all things being equal. When it comes to the more budget friendly, low light option the s5iix probably wins because of the available lenses! Their lineup of prime lenses are quite afford and would be helpful in low light given their wider aperture. The sony equivalent will be a bit more expensive. Great question! Thanks for checking out the vid!
Would you rather see ND’s or IBIS? I know the Burano has both, but that likely requires a larger body to accommodate it. So just out of curiosity, would you prefer one over the other in a hypothetical?
@@RonWilliams215 I was just thinking the same thing after posing that question. The gyrodata stabilizes footage really well in Catalyst Prepare, but the workflow is a bit cumbersome. If I could use gyro data for stabilizing in Resolve, then Id pick the internal NDs over IBIS as well:)
Great video! Hello from inside AOD :D I do wish you added some b-roll of what you've been shooting with it (particularly the on-site and commercial work you mentioned)
Thank you so much! :) Now that you mentioned it, it feels so obvious to have dropped in some of those clips! Lol I hadn't even considered it until now. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll keep that in mind in future videos!
@@TroyMairs the only single issue is crop at 4k 60p orelse nothing is close to s5iix as of till date ....nikon z6iii is yet to prove itself...its a honeymoon phase for Nikon.. and good luck buying cf express cards compared to ssd 😆 . And to be honest i don't see Nikon will update like Lumix does to their line-up.
@@TroyMairs and i wish in next version of s5iix they include 2 usb c, one for pd charging and another for usb gen 3.2 for data recording on to ssd . I know hdmi is there for braw but 2 usb c solves the problem of dummy battery.
@@BRobin2023 I can't make this any clearer. This camera isn't being replaced in 2024. There is still a forthcoming firmware update on the way in September for it. Whereas the FX9 hasn't had a firmware up date in over 18 months and its the oldest of the FX series. But keep talking. Sometimes cameras have sales.
I'd like to see them put open gate in the next generation (not likely but wishful thinking) and hopefully they'd switch to type B cards like the burano .... that would be greatly appreciated.
@@JoeyNguyen-mo6xc Interesting take! Thanks for sharing! I hadn't considered the media card perspective. The only downside of that is that most computers don't have a native card reader for those. So you'd always need a card reader, pros and cons of everything!
Wish you would do a video about using the Sony app. Were you referring to the creative app? I find it drops connections frequently actually. I have tried Monitor + and the Creators app. But neither are really “reliable
I did! Good eye :) The biggest difference for me between the two has been the built in WiFi that allows the use of remote apps. I regularly use the remote functions of the FX3 and the C70 really lacks in that area. Still an awesome camera though! And battery life for days! Thanks for checking out the vid!
I've used the C70 for 5 times, and the FX3 three times. C70 has a great image, but suffers in low light, and to me it seemed like the internal NDs, even though being great, For either too much or not enough since they go into stop increments, and I'd often have to stop down my lens which is not what I wanted to do. I'd rather buy an external ND with a magnetic system and have to carry it around with me. The C70 also can't be rigged out in a small form factor that's not super heavy. The LCD screen is unmatched on the C70, but that's about it.
@@TroyMairs Cool. As you talked about in the video I too really want to change my approach for video work moving forward. While some gear is essential and necessary, I really want to focus less on worrying about the camera and more about making a good product. The biggest reason for me wanting to switch is I've always wanted to shoot full frame and really I'm just so done with my C70. It's a camera that I consistently have to baby and I'm worried that at any moment I will break the monitor again. It was a great camera to learn on, but more and more of the companies that I freelance for are already in the Sony ecosystem and it just makes sense for me to integrate. One of the things I'm most worried about switching is when it comes to the ND filters. I rely so much on the built-in ND's of the C70. I thought long and hard about maybe getting the fx6, but that would really defeat the purpose of me wanting to scale back my approach to videography. What was your feelings on not having ND filters? I see that in your gear list you have listed the Polar Pro Helix NDs system which looks dope, but how is the color shift? I'm all but ready to pull the trigger on getting an fx3, I'm just waiting on my C70 to return from Canon Pro Services and the Shutter Angle firmware update to come out.
@@ty-k6708 I definitely understand the sentiment! I went through the exact same decision making process myself, and the ND situation was a real tough one. When I got the C70 I swore I'd never use a camera without em😂 (we see how that played out) The Helix system has REALLY made that about as painless as possible. I don't find them to be a nuisance at all, from the physical application to the effect they have on the image, it is as close to having internal NDs as you can get:) I outfit all of my lenses with the helix baseplate, and then use a helix lens cap when not in use👍
Definitely prefer a book light to a soft box. At the end of the day, soft boxes have only been a recent phenomenon with the rise in LED lighting because they don't emit as much heat as tungsten, hmi etc that would burn through a soft box. Also those double riser c-stands look super helpful although I'm able to achieve a similar set-up with a super clamp/pin receiver combo.
I hadn't considered how recent the softbox phenomenon truly is. It is a super easy/concenient method of getting a soft light, but I don't find it to scatter in an organic way quite the way I'd like it too. Thanks for the comment!
Really enjoy your personality, your outlook on photography and what you are bringing to these videos. I know that growth is slow, but stay on it...the platform needs your content.
@@TroyMairs Oh thats great! It was meant to encourage, this is definitely going to take you places and Im excited to follow your journey...I like your photos as well! You both have a great one, I have the X2D on order along with a Leica M11P :D
Thanks for checking out the video! Great question, I wish I could remember for sure but I don't think I used an adapter. If I did, I would have likely just wrapped a bit of gaff tape around the barrel to get a tighter fit!
Troy, great work, as usual. I read through the comments and you’ve meanioned a few times that 24p hasn’t caused any overheating. That’s my only concern with getting an a7iv as a stills camera/b cam for video. My a cam is fx3. After almost a year, are you still able to record without any overheating issues? Thanks man
Much appreciated! Great question, one year later I'm still rocking the A7iv! I too now have an Fx3 as my A-cam and have been very pleased to use the A7iv as a B-cam/stills cam. No overheating concerns from my end!
IBIS was mentioned but what about one the most important things, Color Science? I don't own either, but after looking at hundreds of our hours of footage from both and hearing comments, I don't think I would want to color correct jaundiced skin tones every time. Even videoing grass, it looks yellowy green. I am still probably getting the S5 ii, even after this video. To me the one big thing Sony has going, is the large choice of lenses.
Fair enough! Thanks for sharing your perspective! The ecosystem surrounding Sony cameras is a pretty tough to beat, but there are ways around it if need be! Best of luck out there, and happy shooting!
at the end of the day, when some one make a movie, they ask "who make it ?" first ... and maybe then "what gear that he use ?" so gear up with what you got now, make some masterpiece ...
Love this! We could all use the exact same gear, location, time of day, and actors and STILL all end up with different images/movies.That's the beauty of our individuality as creators :)
The slider shot is awsome. I've just got wordering that How long and how many cameras had you done the final story shooting? and did you shoot this movie solo?
Hey thank you so much! :) This was all shot on just one camera, with a few different takes to get the right angles :) I did have a friend of mine helping me to shoot this, but I'm sure you could pull of something similiar on your own!
As someone with the a7siii and the s5iix both cameras actually compliment each other well as a a-b cam set up... now if they can have a baby I'd be so happy.
"UV" is a misspelled "VU". That's one of the things I don't appreciate about Shenzhen manufacturers, that they handle language so sloppily and pay too little attention to proper translation, grammar and spelling. By the way: the delay of the wired HDMI connection from the camera to the monitor unfortunately makes the m1 unusable as a camera monitor as far as I'm concerned. I do see a role as a possible client monitor, but there are also other wireless alternatives for that.
The priorities matter. And the "overheating" may mean either the "single-film" time, or "you literally can't use camera until it cools down". I've got myself in a trouble, because had mistaken first for second in EOS R6. R6 overheated and needed a cooldown 6 times at one project. And now - no expensive FF camera without cooling will be my choice. But I am very interested in S9 tbh. Want to see the progress of sensor technology and passive camera body cooling overall. All said - Your priorities matter. Godspeed!
Great video man, I’ve been doing this for a long time and have also learned the hard way! Data storage gets pushed lower on the list than it should be, and I’m in the same boat as you on that one!
Wow. Every Sony camera?? That's wild! I've yet to experience any overheating on my A7IV/Fx3. Everyone seems to have a different experience with them! Thanks for checking out the video!
Fantastic video! The titles are great! Actually, I am considering buying this monitor right now. I have a Sony ZV-E10, which is a tiny camera, but I still would like a big 7-inch screen to view every shot clearly. Would a 7 inch be too big for a tiny mirrorless camera? Or is it fine as long as the camera rig doesn't need to be compact.. Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks for checking it out :) There are certainly no rules or boxes you have to check when it comes to how you want your camera/rig to perform for you! There is real value in having a larger screen to clearly view your image, no matter what camera you are shooting on. An argument could be made that a substantially larger screen could throw off the balance of the rig, but in this case, the LH7H is a very lightweight monitor. So I think you'd be able to mount it to your ZV-E10 and be happy with the results.
Your video is great, but at this point is not "definitive answer" as the Lumix 3.0/2.0 (S5 II/IIX) firmware upgrades change the camera's performance "drastically" (not an exaggeration) for free. Might be time to update?
Thanks for checking out the video! I did hear that the Lumix has had a s oftware update since this video went live that adds some performance upgrades. Love to see that for all of the Lumix users! :)
