Our family long case is similar to the one worked on here. Small differences like the side windows being rectangular, lack of ornate fret-work on top, and presence of a "strike/silent" setting. Name on the face is James Chalk, and I assume it to be of either English or Scottish origin (with German movement?). My brother is the current custodian.
I love your videos.... My wife and I were at a garage sale this past Sunday. The two women had lost there father and were in the proccess of selling the items he owned in the garage. In the garage was a 7ft. grandfather clock covered in dust. I asked if it was for sale and I was able ot get it for $80. I am no clock expert but want to clean and get this clock back to working condition. My question is how do I find out more about this clock? It has MADE IN Germany (0) Jewels unadjusted 4 \ 6 7 and JAK Original Kieninger.
Antique banjo grandfather clock sides i sprayed with a liquid gold. Has psintings on side and front. Now has a dull grayish wash like look where the liquid gold touched. HOW DO I RESTORE THE ORIGINAL LOOK?
Ive watched a few of his videos, and i was always taught to never move a clock with pendulum and or weights attached, but hes done it almost every time.
For proper transportation purposes, these timepieces were design to have the weight wound upward to sit behind wooden guides in the upper throat and the pendulum secured by a square brass hardware piece into the lower beat plate that would not only secure the pendulum and bob in place but also keep the 7 pound lead weight from moving front to back and potentially running into and breaking the front throat tablet.
Most Tall Case Clocks from the 16th (and some earlier) century through the 19th century were made and sold with only the two front leg and/or feet. You will often find added rear legs, not replacement legs. The original design intent was for the clock to be leaned back against a wall. Later design changes included all four legs as flooring became more stable and plumb to walls. Stone flooring was often uneven or unstable. Wall structures improved with more plumb or 90° intersections with floors occurring From the mid 17th century on forward, but these improvements were a luxury. As free standing Tall Case clocks became more popular, the base plinth and footprint became deeper and wider as well.
Shot in the dark here as this is an older video. But I’m looking to commission someone to build me something like this as well as other kinetic steampunk accessories. If you know someone please reply!
Hi Annette, You can email me. The name of my business is the same as this channel name. Add "info@" to the front of the channel name and ".com" at the end. That's my email address. Gary
Wonderful melodies! When these clocks play melodies and strike the hours it is pleasant to hear. Nowadays some quartz clocks electronically imitates the same because they contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board of sound chips connected to speaker. But they can't beat these real chimes and music-boxes.

Enjoyed this, very much. Such wonderful old clocks, thanks Gary. Wondering if perhaps your Ass't Curator has digitized recordings of these musical movements?
