The greatest insult to those of us who served , who done our time on the border manning checkpoints and doing foot patrols and MSG’s , who stood on post in the hotel hour after hour day after day, who served this country on ATCP duties, who done our duties in Congo Cyprus Lebanon Liberia Chad and the former Yugoslavia to name but a few, and because we weren’t in service on the day in question we weren’t “ entitled “ to this award, yet brand new recruits in the RDF were awarded this medal, it just goes to show you what the government really think of us, yet the CoS will get a DSM on retirement, a DSM for holding the rank while the troops froze our bollox off through the dark days of the troubles on the border, it’s nice to know that some recruit is wearing a medal that we exers earned for them.
I hear this is a great place to work at, Everybody's treated the same , Irish , none Irish, They will always support you and there's no double standards.
I passed out in 1990 57th Recruit Platoon .. Scratch was tougher as I remember, in an ice-cold river with dead sheep :-) no nice circle to crawl around. Passing out parade brings back great memories, paused and replayed the salute. We were not allowed to fire blanks in the salute , Bn commander said it might frighten the crowd. Didn't see it here either ...pity
Trained and was posted to the 2 Inf Bn two years after this video, great to see a few faces that ‘helped’ me in Recruit Training in 1997 - Gleno 😁, go on the Vikings !!!!💪🇮🇪
The Irish approach through known distance firing ranges and the "falling plates" competitions are so important to actual combat shooting and marksmanship.
People seriously underestimate how painful those fast marches with the rucksack are on your legs, especially if you're not used to walking with 100+ pounds on your back and haven't stretched. Most of these lads probably had sore legs for a week.
Good lad, knuckle down with your study at school and do a cadetship. Serve as an officer and make a proper paid career of it. Enlisted soldiering is no way to make a living these days unfortunately, unless a life of poorly paid hardship is the dream for you personally.
The 107th Infantry Battalion is a bit boring compared to the old Irish Regiments like the Royal Dublin Fusiliers/the Connaught Rangers/Royal Irish Rifles and the Irish Guards etc. And even the old Militia units like the Royal County of Dublin Rifle Volunteers and the Royal City of Dublin Militia and the many others. I know why the original names were changed but the modern names are anonymous and could come from virtually any country.
