Art vlogs, draw with me or material review videos 🌿 On a journey to become a better artist...

I'm Evelyne, freelance illustrator for fantasy games and books, and I'm posting my own art practice journey as I try to get better at anything and everything, from portraits to landscapes, charcoal to oil pastels.

Painting mostly in acrylics and watercolors, with the occasional digital sketch and lots of oil pastels.

I'm a Swiss artist living in South Korea, and while mostly painting for clients, I can't wait to go outdoor sketching around Jeju Island, to visit some traditional temples or cute cafes to fill my sketchbook.

As I also mention art supplies that I personally use and love, some of the links I post may be affiliate links (always marked!), for Jackson's Art and Rosemary & Co. in particular, so if you purchase through my links, I may earn a small commission.
As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

M’lady, just found your channel by chance and I’m mesmerised by your drawings. I have a copy of Dracula sitting on my bookshelf and you gave me good reasons to read it. I’m currently working on drawing a close girlfriend of mine as a super hero and my planning process has been similar: drawing pages of possible costumes, poses, colour combinations and variations before the final piece. It is really inspiring and refreshing to see your approach on your painting as well 🔥 Keep up the good content! 💪🏻

Thank you! I hope you get to read that Dracula book you have - there's also the Dracula Daily newsletters which are a fun read every year, and those were the reason I got so into the story. And yes, filling a sketchbook page (or many sketchbook pages!) like this helps so much with preparation, and it helps me to dive into the actual painting with more confidence. I hope it's the same for you! 💙

Loved the colour palette you've used here! And the art, gosh - so gorgeous! I think the one you struggled with is the one that grabbed me the most - I love the earth tones and the expression you finally settled on - but the tiny tiger one! The colour contrast there - I love oranges with teals so I do love that one too. I loved hearing about the mythology too ! I've been trying to do some finished pieces outside of a sketchbook recently, having a few art days here and there, and it really is so rewarding to do a 'proper' finished piece.

Thank you so much! This entire color palette was very new for me - I didn't even own any green paint beyond a simple Terre Vert for glazing, and it was fun to put the pigments to the test here! Especially the turquoise now pops up everywhere in my art haha... I'm glad you mentioned that little painting I struggled with, because in the end, that was my favorite, too. Sketchbooks are such a wonderful space for exploration or when we only have a little time for drawing, but it felt good to just move from sketchbook pages to canvas without thinking too much, and have something finished. 🥰 Really rewarding, like you said!

This was so good, ngl the thunderstorm was so in time for this. I especially liked multiple sketches of Lucy's face, but the expressions on the male faces (sorry i haven't read Dracula yet) were so well done too. I've also noticed in your replies that you're going to try some soft pastels and honestly can't wait for it As for my personal project i recently got back into watercolors after a month or two (work and mental illness suck) and i'm trying to remember how to paint my OCs. Still lacking direction in terms of stylistic choices but i'm excited for it

Thank you! Honestly, it was the other way around - that storm rolled in and I finally sat down and committed to sketching these! I loved sketching Lucy, and just started painting her face yesterday - I hope I can capture the expression... The soft pastels I got are a small set of Sennelier ones for portraits, so it feels very fitting to try maybe another vampire with those. :) I'm so sorry to hear about the mental health struggles, and I hope this means you're feeling a bit better now. Art breaks, no matter the reason, can be difficult to bounce back from, so I hope you'll get a similar stormy-yet-cozy evening or two for yourself and your OCs ♥

Ah, Gouache. Welcome to the rabbit hole. :D I love using Gouache in a thick, opaque consistency. If you want to do the same, I can recommend using brushes meant for Acrylics because they hold less water. If you have more time/are painting at home, I can also recommend to swatch your colors and mixed colors on the side first to really see what they look like after drying. Some acrylic gouache can also be great as a first layer, because it doesn't rewet. I've also heard the recommendation to save black and white for your last layer with Gouache, so that you can push the contrast (but I usually work with black early on to establish where my shadows are). I love how these tiny studies turned out. Painting on the go poses its own challenges. My favorite from the left sketchbook spread is the view of the book store, and my favorite from the right side is the temple. I also greatly enjoyed hearing your explanation of the temple's colors and what they symbolize. Did you buy the Silmarillion? That took me ages to finish... Lovely travel/art vlog! I enjoyed this video a lot. And wasn't that your own painting in the art exhibit? That must have been amazing to see!
@evydraws-art
@evydraws-art 11 дней назад
Oh no, did I stumble into ANOTHER art supply rabbit hole?? I'd used just white gouache and poster color in the past, but now that I'm diving into full gouache paintings, I'm hooked! And thank you for the advice, I have a lot of acrylic brushes, so I'll give those a try for those more opaque layers. Do you have a favorite brand of gouache paints, by the way? And do you use them mostly at home or on the go, too? :) I always avoided black in the past, thinking it would make color mixes look lifeless, but I'm embracing contrast and darkness nowadays, so straight out of the tube paint it is! The one thing that always surprises me when painting on the go: How long it takes! Especially just getting ready, and figuring out what to paint haha... (and I'm so delighted you spotted my paintings there! I participated in several group exhibits earlier this summer, and it was a wonderful experience!) I actually bought that Silmarillion! Listened to the audiobook but I want to illustrate some specific scenes and characters in the future and thought it would be nice to have the actual printed text. Thank you so much for your lovely comment <3

@@evydraws-art Well you catapulted me into the oil pastel rabbit hole, so now I'm gonna watch you go down the Gouache hole with a certain sense of Schadenfreude. 😉 My first Gouache set was Reeves. Very cheap and a bit chalky, but I painted some really nice work with them. I'm exclusively using Holbein these days. They have some lovely seasonal sets as well. I've uploaded reviews of their spring and winter sets to RU-vid, but those were some of my earlier videos, so no idea if the audio sounds any good... Those two sets both include a turquoise color (a darker one in the winter set) that are just perfect for the roof tiles you see on Japanese or Korean temples! I'll leave my Torii gate speedpainting here in opaque Gouache if you are interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lQRGhXdZfwI.html I don't really paint on the go, but I admire any who do! I prefer painting at home where I have all of my supplies and related stuff. The only other place where I paint is my parents' home, since my mum also loves to paint and has a lot of supplies as well, so I don't need to worry about bringing everything. I'd love to see what you will paint from the Silmarillion!
@evydraws-art
@evydraws-art 11 дней назад
Schadenfreude for art supply rabbit holes is the best kind of Schadenfreude! :D (there are too many rabbit holes! the entire art community is just rabbits digging little holes for each other...) I'd never even heard of Reeves! I have a couple by W&N and a single poster color by Shinhan, but Holbein are my first pick now since they're very affordable in Korea and easy to find. I think I've seen those seasonal sets by them, they look VERY tempting (oh no, the rabbit hole!) I'll have to take a closer look! And that color selection from Winter would be a great pick... 👀 A mom who paints and has her own supplies to add to the mix sounds amazing! But yeah, the bringing along of supplies is why I mostly paint at home, too - but that's why I feel like documenting these travel sketching sessions when I get around to them. <3 Silmarillion art feels perfect for autumn days of golden and red leaves... very excited myself!

@@evydraws-art Hahaha, yes! I feel that we artists are caught in the endless loop of rabbit holes. My husband saw me look at the Sennelier oil pastells on Amazon and I had to tell him "I don't have this particular medium yet" to explain why I'm looking at art supplies again. The Holbein winter set is lovely, just know that many of them are more transparent paints, even when used straight from the tube. My mum used to only paint in acrylics, but recently she has gotten into inks and watercolors. Whenever I visit, we show each other our recent work or latest supplies. 🤩 This also makes it super easy for me to find gifts for her, since I know what she already owns and I generally know what kind of brands or sets are good, even for media that I don't paint in.

I was just talking to my partner about all the acrylic gel mediums I own (it's only three! it's fine!) and what the differences are... at least he gets it since he loves photography haha. (... did you get those Sennelier ones? 👀) Interesting about those being transparent! I'm definitely looking for more opaque paint, because I have my old watercolors for when I'm painting transparently. Now you might actually have saved me from doing an impulse buy haha As I love acrylics above all: Say hi to your mom! ☺️ And that really sounds like an amazing gifting opportunity - artists are just so easy to shop for!
