I lived for a couple of months in Erith, in 1982, and never realised that it ever [once] had a town centre, let alone imagined how famous an Admiralty location it had been in Tudor times. Only yesterday, on following up a mention of Erith by Samuel Pepys (in 1662) did I begin looking for more information. If anyone could point me to other historical websites, I'd be most grateful. Seemingly, Erith has such a proud history.

Thank you for this lovely reminder of the town I knew, as a child. I used to live above the menswear shop, opposite Fine Fare, and would go to Saturday morning pictures at the cinema, then across the road for six penn'orth of chips afterwards. We played on the wasteground behind the cinema, and in 'the caves' (until we were chased away), then, when the houses were being left empty, awaiting demolition, they also became our playground. It was sad to see a once thriving town being reduced to rubble, replaced by an ugly concrete fortress, then become a ghost town where vandals and drug-users took over at night. Now that awful mess has been swpt away, and a new Erith has emerged from the ashes. Is it better? I cannot answer that, as I no longer live there.

Wow, I would have loved to walk around the old Erith! There’s nothing much there now, lots closed down: Wilko, Argos, Show Zone. Only visit now for Matalan and Savers as it’s close by.

Never been Erith before but planning to explore the place! 😊 Lovely view of the River Thames and of course the seals 🦭🦭🦭 I do feel sorry for them though. - what do they eat? How do they live and survive this dirty river? 😮

Friday Hill and the PomPom! Not sure they are still called that? I know vaguely where the Pom Pom but came from but not why Friday Hill was so-called loosely.
@garyhailey2603

The pom pom was the pub called the nordenfeldt ...the nordrnfeldt gun made the noise "pom pom" when it was shooting at the enemy ...erith used to be alright like most places that have been ruined....its called progress apparently

On the plus side, there has been some work done on the streets recently to make them *slightly* prettier. Not much shopping available now though. I hope that a new shopping centre comes in to replace the horribly dated one now. Good luck Erith 🫡

When this film was made it was Erith kent . Then in 1969 it became part of the London borough of Bexley .the start of the destruction of Erith. Councils have a lot to answer for

10yrs later and I’m seeing this for the first time. I had no idea how pretty parts of it were before the 30s era regeneration. The outcome as it stands today is truly shameful. It underlines how little interest there is in this section of the borough when it comes to planning and resources. Just look at the concrete jungles beginning to pop up around the train stations. As others have said it is soulless - I live in Belvedere (Nuxley Village) which is little different although the green areas do break up the monotony of glub housing a bit. The whole of Earth centre needs greenery to break up the featureless building design. It needn’t cost a fortune although the social issues may mean it gets smashed up “for a laugh” by the local yutes.

Thanks for the beautiful video of old Erith with powerful poem but so sad. Had heard about the changes within Erith high street so for the last couple of years, I've wanted to see this town. Yes stark concrete jungle for a shopping centre. Saw the river Thames with the tide out. This, with its long pier, looked enchanting.

Feltham is the same on the other side of London. It too was once a thriving old town which was destroyed by modern planning!

1.15 How could they pull down these beautiful buildings on the left, in Pier Road? Look at the roofs, they were wonderful.

Look at the photo at 6.16. How they could tear down those magnificent buildings in Pier Road, I'll never know. And what is there now? An ugly flat car park. I worked in Barclays Bank the first building at the top of the road. Those buildings were beautiful inside and out. Well built, magnificent finish inside. Imagine the luxury flats above the shops below, if they had kept the south side of the street. The other side, 1960's shops are still there! No character or class. What a crying shame.

If it helps that whole section of the dual carriageway is replacing the concrete highrises with (mock) wooden facaded medium density three story blocks. Much like how the Kidbrooke regeneration started at the Ferrier estate. Although that’s where the similarity ends. The old Ferrier estate was shocking (my mum grew up just up the road from there) it’s now actually quite nice. Larner Road meanwhile is still a dump.

Just a quick note. The title sequence say "Hendley Mitchell". which is probably a typo. It was of course Hedley Mitchells which I can remember. It was a great shop. The international stores were nearby opposite the Odeon Cinema. The Prince of Wales Pub stood on the site of the KFC . Some good shops in the high street and more pubs than I can recall. The regeneration plan had good intentions but was in my opinion ill judged and came at the wrong time. Bexleyheath did a similar scheme and I think it drew away a lot of custom from Erith. The Edward Butler connection to Erith is very interesting and if the government of the time had been more enterprising and Butler had been better backed then Erith would be considered the birthplace of the Motor Car. Another small footnote in the history of Erith is the fact that in 1884 the first Australian Cricket Tourists played on a pitch in what was the Frasers/ GEC/Parsons Engineering site at Fraser Road Nice to see some of the old site. Thanks

This makes me so sad. The arrogance of the "we know best" councillors and planners! I suppose the misplaced belief in "progress" and in the "need" to get rid of "outdated" buildings, the beauty of which wasn't appreciated in those days, is partly understandable for the 60s. But I can remember visiting the brand new Town Square in summer 1973 when working in Manor Road and seeing how awful it was, and how the years of impending and actual demolition had blighted the town. What I find harder to fathom is why the destruction continued into the 70s. The plan to basically destroy a whole town centre and replace it was wildly ambitious and stupid but surely by the mid 70s (ironically 1975 was architectural heritage year) Bexley Council must have seen what a terrible mistake had been made- and there was still time to save some of the buildings . But no, they ploughed on to 1980.
