Originally recorded at the legendary Sun studios in Memphis on 3rd March 1951 by Jackie Brenston & The Delta Cats - who in reality were Ike Turner’s band The Kings of Rhythm - Rocket 88 is claimed to be the first ever Rock n Roll record by Sun Record's owner/producer, Sam Phillipps. It was co-written by Brenston and Turner and was a groundbreaking fusion of jump blues and swing, featuring a fuzzed-out guitar [due to distortion on the guitar's damaged amplifier] off-key piano and interspersed by Brenston's saxophone solos. Strictly speaking, the song was essentially R&B [it became number 1 on the R&B charts that same year]. However, it was quickly picked up and covered by Bill Haley and the Comets also in 1951 which essentially cemented his connection with Rock n Roll. As a result, and by association with Haley's pioneering of Rock n Roll - Jackie Brenston's original version of 'Rocket 88' was deemed by many 'experts' [at the time and since] to have been the very first Rock n Roll record. [this is actually highly ironical - many ill-informed 'observers' claimed Haley had greatly influenced Brenston's musical style, when in truth it was completely the opposite!] Interestingly, Elvis Presley - who recorded his first records for Sam Phillips at the Sun Records studio, would pester Phillips to death to hear all his latest records. [Phillips was also a highly acclaimed DJ]. Phillips consequently played Jackie Brenston's 'Rocket 88' for Presley - who loved it so much, it became his 'all-time favourite' record! I have both Jackie Brenston's [and both Bill Haley and the Comet's] vinyl releases of 'Rocket 88' and whilst I do prefer Jackie Brenston's version overall - Haley's [Rockabilly] iteration of the song is extremely good too!

Bill Haley did a great version of this in 1951 with the great Danny Cedrone on lead guitar. The same guy who played the lead on Ro ck Around The Clock. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_lPU6xwc8Cs.htmlsi=NorHcLXJqbPghqIa

Bollocks to the distortion hype, there are/were many claims and origins to R&R , just listen to some Amos Milburn, Louis Jordan, Jay McShann, N'Orleans' Dave Bartholomew et al...it goes back to the '40s R&B as much, or more, than the 50's!
