God, this is fire. I've often brushed off the gender expectation dichotomy between heroines and villanesses, but you laid it out super well. And you killed it with the sources.

Nope, its a reality, of course its an American whining about it. Some of the best isekai have slavery in it, who cares.. Nobody is bitching about "Oh man Slavery is in Game of thrones" "Oh man slavery is in movies". Shield Hero is great, Mushoku is great, and he saved Raphtalia becomes a hero. Don't buckle Anime, first they'll complain about this, and then if you give them that, then they'll start bashing women being "objectified" and then Anime will be just like all the garbage Hollywood "entertainment" we have now like the Acolyte or Rings of Power.
@addidaswguy

And I am not "Pro Slavery" in anime, It is definitely something that has made me feel uncomfortable watching.. However, I am all for LEAVING anime/LN/Manga creators alone.. Once you start putting limiters on them, regardless of what they are, then the floodgates will begin and it is only going to get worse and worse, I can barely watch current day shows with their forced crap, "for everyone" but actually for way less people, and just horrible and non creative writing.

It's not bad if a fictional story has slavery in it as long as it is handled well. When the story is glorifying slavery in any way, that's when it becomes bad (such as making the mc a kind enslaver just because he treats them well or something), or making the mc look like a joke because the mc claim to hate slavery and wants to destroy it only to end up contributing to it and was shown outright enjoying having his own slaves in the end. And will you shut up, so what if she is American? People have the rights to have morals if they want to regardless of nationality or race. I'm a Filipino and still understand her (mostly because I know my own country and people has been enslaved by other nations such as Spain AND Japan) and she has even worded everything I wanted to say. Let me guess, you are an American yourself and you're disagreeing with her, surprise.
@addidaswguy
@addidaswguy 5 дней назад
@@IvanUnova yes I am American, but annoying Amercians think our way is "the right way" and want to impose it onto the rest of the world. A story is a story, it doesn't matter if they make things look good, bad, whatever, it's fiction, and nobody should ever have to worry about what people think is "right" when they write fiction. That's why 95% of current day media SUCKS and why Anime doesn't, because they don't let whiny people on the Internet dictate their writing, and if they ever do, it'll be just as bad as everything else

...Did you even watch Banana Fish? It's NOT fanservice and it's not adolescent angst. The story is about man who was a victim of sex trafficking as a child, street gangs, corruption, US military intervention... Disgusting how you diminished such a story like that.

Calling a story about a child r victim, who again continues to face sexual violence in the story, "adolescent angst" and "fanservice" is incredibly irresponsible

The one time in JoJo that someone is criticized for their fashion sense/choices is Josuke’s hair, and we all know how that ends… but aside from that, I think it’s a lesson built into the story - Josuke’s hair is extremely important to him, for reasons that a stranger could never know. The idea being that you shouldn’t criticize someone else’s fashion or style choices because you really never know the meaning or story behind them

Not sure I agree completely with the points on Uraraka and Toga, for one I feel Uravity's growth as a fighter is actually pretty interesting not to mention Toga being "misunderstood" due to the inherent malicious nature of her quirk is the foundation of her entire character arc. Not to mention she isn't opposed to Uraraka because of Conflict over Deku and rather she's also in conflict with Deku to the point of harming him genuinely because she likes him and is also depicted as being attracted to Uraraka as well as another female character in the show (Tsu). If anything, Deku just takes precedence essentially due to a trauma response from Toga (he looks like her first crush who died).

The problem I see is with the institution of slavery existing in a world of magic and somehow being so prevalent. Most labor is possible to replace by magic I would assume. So what's the point in keeping someone as a slave? Sex? Well most people wouldn't justify that other than a few degenerates and nobles. So at that point it becomes weird.

When writers themselves don't realize/acknowledge their hero is evil, I don't know if it's because they suck at writing or as a human beings. And this is so easy to fix; I'll set you free > I've no home to return to > Then follow me > allies, friends, lovers or whatever bs fantasy isekai you want it to be. Problem solved.

6:53 "[Uraraka is] a mind-numbingly boring character" HOW DARE YE SPEAK SUCH HERESEY That aside really great video, I agree with about 99% of what you said. Shounen being such a boy's club definitely does lead to less developed female characters, and if tokenism wasn't a bad enough for the heroes, there's often so few female villains that they'll almost always fall into a recognizable trope without much nuance.

I haven't seen the other shows in question, but I did watch Shield Hero for a bit before it became unbearable. Believe it or not, it gets WORSE from where you stopped. I liked the premise of having a main character with little to no offensive capabilities (though that changes not long into the first season) and I'm certainly not opposed to dark or edgy storytelling, but the way they handled slavery was an unignorable blight against anything else that was enjoyable in the show. What you luckily avoided based on where this video left off is how Raphtalia actually tries using her slave crest to flirt with Naofumi shortly after having it reapplied, which just thinking about makes me want to vomit uncontrollably. Things don't get much better along those lines for the rest of season 1, but my breaking point came at the start of season 2 when Raphtalia asks another character if she wanted to become a slave, framing it as a good thing for her. I truly wish I was making that up or exaggerating, but I realized that I had made a mistake investing as much time into this show as I had at that moment. The idea that other shows thought that was the trope they needed to copy for success, as well as the fact that they seemed to be right in some cases, is incredibly depressing.

It is a must-see anime, although it touches on very sensitive issues and is not afraid to talk about them. I would pay good money for an isekai anime about a brother getting transferred to another high fantasy world will all the races im not even kidding. He's expected to help save the world from the daemon king after ten years but after learning that this kindom practices slavery he refuses to try to fight the demon king unless the kingdom outlaws slavery and free up all slaves in their kingdom, even brutally killing a slave owner escaping prosecution because he is the summoned hero but it does lose him alot both from the nobility or wealthy who see im as a bloodthirsty brute and alot are slave owners themselves, nor the commonfolk who are now terrified or disgusted by his butchery.

I'm a few months late but holy shit. I cackled my ass off not one minute in and bawled my eyes out after 6 minutes. Like yeah, duh, Sk8 is hella queer, but you brilliantly put it into tangible words why. I loved every single character analysis!!!! One thing I'd like to add (somebody might have mentioned it before) in the queerbaiting debate about having to prove being in love as a queer person is heavily Western-minded. In the Japanese language and culture a *lot* is based on context and your own interpretation, whereas in Western countries you have to be way more direct. So I believe the production team just put a lot more trust in their Japanese audience. Also THAT BINGO CARD IS BRILLIANT I WILL SO USE IT
@stg-tf4ns
@stg-tf4ns 27 дней назад
I'd have to imagine this has something to do with the cultural atmosphere and the general perception of slavery (any many other things tbh) in East Asia From a personal observation, despite having the general idea of 'slavery bad', the concept itself doesn't carry anywhere nearly enough weight compared to the western world. Both the amount and depth of the depth of discussions around the slave trade in the general public are quite lacking, presumably due to the difference in the historical background of different countries So considering your average Japanese isekai authors/manga illustrators, I'd say it's completely possible that a great part of them have zero understanding of slavery especially in a western context (despite the fact that most isekais are largely fantasy with a heavy medieval/renaissance European theme) and thought that it'd be a thing that's not that hard to get away with for the protag to use as a plot device as they can just 'be nice' or 'have a reason'

Here's a thought: imagine you woke up tomorrow in another world and this institution (gotta watch how I put things) is alive, well, and completely unquestioned to the point where even if you freed someone, they'd legitimately consider whether they could afford to get one for themselves later down the line. Further, it's at the level of technology typical of this genre. What would you say and do in this world? Keep in mind, none of the arguments you bring up are likely going to make any sense to most of the people your speaking to: in our own history, it took the development of a religion whose principles (all become brothers and sisters under one deity who loved them enough take on flesh and die for them) gave rise to the idea of a basic dignity to all humans which in turn undermined the idea you could have that level of control over someone else. In this fictional world, that never happened. Further, its likely that current political philosophy that was inspired in part by said religion as well as the writings of ancient philosophers and championed the ideal of human liberty also did not arise here. In the fictional world, it's likely that the usual way of doing things exists, and further since technology is still medieval, there's no substitute for...free labor. So what's your plan? Do you try forcing your modern morals on this society at weapon point? Either you get buried in enemies, fall to old age before you accomplish anything...or there's not going to be enough people left for this topic to matter. Do you try to appeal to the powers that be? Chances are they have the most to lose from intentionally destabilizing their own kingdoms by doing that, so good luck. There's only one way to meaningfully win a fight like this, and that's by convincing people that this is objectively wrong...and in that case, as in our world, you may have to get used to the idea that something like that will take multiple lifetimes if not centuries or millennia. Considering most of these kinds of stories only take place over a single person's time in the world they find themselves in, then its no surprise that from both a writing perspective and a human one, they just role with it, because trying to stop whatever bad guy or monster is threatening to make life worse for everyone is going to immediately outweigh stopping something on this scale. That said, for prospective writers consider the above. If the hero takes care of the usual stuff early enough onward, then dealing with the above could be a whole story on its own. Also, for those who like a good tragedy, perhaps you could go full Konrad Curze and have this noble cause and the lengths the hero goes to achieve it turn them even more terrifying than what they tried to destroy, only for them to realize and morn it at the very end. After all, not all stories and endings have to be idealistic, and sometimes someone who wanted to be a hero but was turned to a monster by their own fanaticism provides both a good story and an important lesson on how far to go for a good cause.

11:04 This is not a misogynistic idea, is just the reality :/ Girls are indeed very bad being a leader and also being equal co-op to man. When for whatever some random man(me) for some dumb or naive reason did try treat a woman like he usualy do to his equal manly buddy .... It's failed, catastrophically! It's not how reality flow you know -_- Girls get so confused when you let they free to act and help solve the stuff by her own... The poor girl get so clumsy and slow but when i leadership her she get much faster, smart, eficient to solve problems and helping me! When i do co-op with a manly friend i don't need to lead the guy like was need for the clumsy girls because he can co-op with me by himself very easy and on efficient ways, whiout me bossing. My actions and his actions mix toghter perfectly so there is no need to boss around, and i hate being a leade, cause i am lazy. But sometimes is sweet when i need to boss a girl i will not lie. Also sounds like you girls love when some Manly man is taking the leardship, so complaining about it is hipocrisy, because you ladies like much much when a man turn you into a woman! You Ladies can't complaing about misogynistic when at same time being much happier between the legs when suffering on the hand of evil mysogystic, that don't treat girls equals, so evil eeek! So That is Hypocrise to my point o view!! Also i like that, sometimes the girls get very cute :) Sooo Welcome to Biology, Welcome to Reality!!! And gender gap is bullshit, it's mean nothing, woman don't like be in power positions, that is simple as that, gender gap is not a real problem, is just girls being happier doing her stuff she wanna do instead of obeying blind and mindless the dumb modern society that created singles, unhappy and sad ladies, Also turn the girls souls so ugly tha make me wanna puke. I mean really, A woman that was used a lot of times and did lost his feminity virtues is soo fucking ugly that make me sick, and i love romance and by a lot, a good woman has a yuumy soul, so the worst are the girls out there less fun i have :(

Jojo's and its approach to unconventional masculinity and androgynous fashion was a huge part of the journey I went on unpacking my concept of gender, as a trans man. Something about the way the characters exhibit feminine traits while still being undeniably masculine made it feel like the show was holding my hand while I settled into myself, if that makes sense.

7:01 Pretty disingenuous portrayal of what happens here. The censor graphic isn’t really censoring much that would get you demonetized, and it’s an attempted R scene cut short by the protagonist’s intervention, not even a full on one as described in the video. There is definitely much worse in both film and anime. I’m also not a fan of how that anime was skipped over and denounced because umm… the lady yelled and struggled for a moment, almost fully clothed. The hero stopping the R would’ve even made for a good point in the “They use this trope to show the heroes as above this kind of stuff” discussion.
