With insect netting or shade cloth over the plants, I’m wondering how pollinators reach the flowers?
@BootstrapFarmer
@BootstrapFarmer 20 часов назад
If you are using frost blanket all day in the winter/early spring it’s likely the pollinators are not active yet ant it’s too early for flowering crops. On the shade it cold be fastened in a way that the sides or top can be open to allow pollinators in if needed.

This is a great and informative video! Thanks for sharing... It was fun to see our friends from the Nakid Gardeners there. We've been working with the USDA/NRCS for a few months now and are looking forward to seeing what they come up with. It's our first time working with them... We're actually getting together with our NRCS rep tomorrow morning.

How do you close the gap when the sides are down and you're rolling to the outside to keep water out? We've just installed our roll up sides, but noticed that when the sides are down, the gap is closed better at the bottom when the side is rolled up the other way...just at the bottom. The weight of the bar and the rope hold it also, but the gap... what do you do? We do have the wind brace corners also covered.

I have tomatoes growing in pots along the outside wall of my garage during the summer.July temperatures here were 35-38 degree. My tomatoes dropped their flowers due to the stress they were in. I want to buy a shade cloth to shade them next season from this heat. Would white shade cloth be best for this situation and at what % shade cloth.
@BootstrapFarmer

It sounds like white would be best but I encourage you to call and speak with our tech team so they can cover all of the variables. 888-406-1982 option 1

how do you prevent stem breaking at the base of the plant while lowering? We grow cucumbers and I observed a lot of plants dying because stems are cracked. I'm trying to find a better way of doing it, but some co-workers are incredibly stubborn in their ways. I'd be grateful for any pointers
@BootstrapFarmer
@BootstrapFarmer 16 дней назад
Vines breaking off is likely to happen whenever you’re trying to lean too far. I would not lean/lower anymore than 4 to 6 feet at a time depending on how the plant is doing. If you start them early, the vines have a natural band without having to overcompensate such a sharp angle from leaning more than what the vine can take. Inevitably, he will snap a vine, but overtime you can engage that with more experience. Just know that when you do snap a vine, you can develop a secondary leader, a very high percentage of the time and not lose the stock. It’ll take a little bit more care and I like to mark the plant so everybody knows to give that vine a little TLC during pruning. You will also notice that the longer as the plant lives, you’re more likely to be able to lower more of the vine further than 6 feet .

So do they need to go in the sun right after putting the seeds in the soil or wait until the seeds germinate to move them outdoors?
@BootstrapFarmer

They will germinate inside to develop root systems for an easier transition.

On the first pipe you indicate a mark 9 inches in. Do you do the same for all 3 poles when using the 20 foot bender? Or the 2nd and 3rd posts have marks every 18 inches and no 9 inch mark?

I can attest to the over usage of amendments, you most definitely can overuse them. When I first started my garden I had a little soil mix and I put so much of everything in, thinking it would just increase the plants almost infinitely, it didn't and all my plants got burned lol

What do you think of rice hulls for drainage?
@BootstrapFarmer
@BootstrapFarmer 23 дня назад
I’ve personally never use them but regionally we don’t have those available to try. Local materials are great and as long as they don’t throw off the pH. I would experiment sparingly to begin with.

May I ask what you use under your raised beds
@BootstrapFarmer

A lot of people use cardboard or landscape fabric. Some people also may silage tarp to prep the soil.

My raised beds have sooo many earthworms, the top few inches are literally pure worm castings! The structure is very loose and I need to amend it...any suggestions?
@BootstrapFarmer
@BootstrapFarmer 25 дней назад
Sounds like a case off too much of a good thing. I would relocate as many as you are comfortable with to another area or into your landscape and replenish top layer with a good quality locally sourced layer of compost with some clean topsoil and mix in any amendments you might need. Hard to say exactly what you’ll need without being there or knowing everything you plan to grow but diluting the richness and possibly high nitrogen % is what your goal should be.
@lesliebehrens7252
@lesliebehrens7252 12 дней назад
I would suggest double checking the ID of your worms. Invasive jumping worms (which I brought in unknowingly in bagged soil mix) are big, fat and very active when disturbed. They will break down soil structure to the point where your soil looks like coffee grounds. IDK your worm history but you might wanna check. Lots of info on RU-vid. Also do not relocate worms, castings or soil from there until you know. Only thing worse than having them is spreading them around.

I'm both a subscriber and a customer. I really appreciate the info and your high quality products. I'm building my own raised beds and I've done quite a bit of research on soil. I have 4 beds planted with about 10 more to go. It's a lot of work but everything planted so far is doing well. Everyday is like a treasure hunt for produce and the whole process brings me so much joy! I'm about 5 years away from retiring and getting this established now for my next journey in life is like fulfilling a dream come true on 20 beautiful acres. Thanks for all you do!

A trick to find a leak is to use a leak dye syringe or make your own with red food dye and a small tube in a poked into a soda bottle to help check suspicious areas. A scrap piece of liner with bike tube patch glue on one side of a circular patch fold in half to cover glue and open it up once over the hole and press out from center to remove any water between the layers.
