Nice work so far. Do you have to change out springs and such or is the weight of the swap motor and trans similar to the original motor and transmission?
Transmission almost exactly the same, Miata 5 speed about 4 more lbs. I don’t know the engines weight but good that you asked 😇 - can confirm the k20 as it’s out at the moment. Will have to research the Fiat engines weight
So I weighed my complete k20z1 and it’s right at 280 lbs. I don’t have the original engine but research tells me it should be around 300 lbs. some posts out there say 330 at most. So interestingly it’s a weight savings. Good to know and will help me source the proper springs and struts. Thanks @wallacemeoski2440 for asking.
@@fiatmonkey4012 Good to know. I have akinn 81 I did a resto mod with. Fiberglass dash I copied from a classic Ferrari. Been thinking about a swap myself. No surprise your motor is lighter than the original considering. With that kind of difference you could really go with stock or any number of available springs and such. I will have to keep your work in mind when the time comes. Keep up the attention to detail, it will make all the difference and you will have a very enjoyable unique ride in the end! I am looking forward to your finished product.
WOW man…just WOW. There I was so proud of myself for exchanging the OEM carburator on my ‘79 for a Weber DEFV…and then I come across your video 😵😵😵…KUDOS TO YOU!!!
😂 well, hats off to you and anyone else wanting to try to get Weber carbs working and tuned right. That can be a serious chore. Of course they sound amazing.
This is such a COOL build, I've always loved the look of the 124 Spider 2000, and have owned several. How for along are you with the project? Can I ask approx how much you have into this project? What are you expecting for H.P. ? Nice job 👍 Danno
@@5589daniel thanks and appreciate the comment. Hard to say exactly how much $ into it, mainly because a lot of mechanical parts are essentially spare or free parts from other projects. However if I had to estimate cost for everything except the car, 7-8k would be a start. When all done, I will do a cost breakdown video. HP goals are modest. I would be happy with 175HP at the wheels. At least to start. Beyond that, I will need re-think differential and transmission option or upgrades.
I was actually trying both wheels to see which looked better. The silver CD 66 are more traditional looking I agree while the darker Abarth more aggressive but look better on a more sportier, rally style 124.
Looks killer! I always liked these cars, and would love to build one just like yours if I did. The widebody really makes the styling standout complementing the origin design. I always thought that a k20 swap in the aw11 first gen MR2 would be cool, but this has that beat by far. I did do something similar and have a Porsche 914 that I stuffed in a 1.8t with a big turbo. It would be very interesting running against your car and seeing the differences as I bet that your power is much more linear. I can granny drive mine around until about 3000rpm then it will build boost, but by 4500rpm its now a rocket and will turn into an animal as it completely leaps forward, tearing at the street until about 7500rpm. Before the 1.8t I did run my 914 with a 16v g60 with an aftermarket lysholm supercharger so I think I know how your car kinda feels, I really liked this setup for autocrossing. I imagine that your Fiat would be a beast at an autocross event. Right now I make between 320-350 depending on my boost and I weigh 2080 pounds with half a tank of gas, you must be much lighter at around 1800-1900 pounds. Loved your video! If you want to see my 914 I have a couple of old videos that you can see on my channel, nothing too special.
Very late reply sorry - sounds like our cars are really close power to weight ratio. With me in the car, scale says 2125, so the Fiat chassis weight is closer to 1930 lbs. Love to see how your 914 does in an auto-x. Also similar power band. With the Rotrex's pully size I am suing, I can't push the engine RPMs too high or I risk over rev the supercharger. I set limiter to 8400, with peak boost at 14 psi. It starts to make + boost around 3400 RPM, so even putting around, the car is pretty responsive. On the freeway, unless I am "having fun", I rarely drop it out of 6th gear at 60 or higher MPH. It has the power and torque to easily pass nearly anyone. And a supercharger linear power is something I really like about this setup. That said, when VTEC kicks in, you do sort of get a little "kick" that can sort of feel like a turbo kicking in (just a little). Love to see some videos of your Porsche!
Great point to make. I built this swap while living in a more milder climate (San Francisco Area) and honestly AC is generally almost never required however, I recently moved literally 60 miles away to south San Jose and the temps are well, on average 20+ degrees more. So, yah keeping AC would have been a good decisions. Problem I have is simply space for the compressor. There is no room at the bottom corner and the rotrex supercharger occupies the only other space I could use. I have considered. an electric compressor like this oneru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mRo05wph2F0.html There is space to mount it in the front boot and close to the battery, also in the front boot. However, I am not quite sure the trade off of space, power and added complexity vs cold air is quite there yet. That said, it's early summer and we haven't hit the triple digits (yet). Still thinking it through...
Is the car NorCal or SoCal? I am thinking of doing a K-swap X 1/9 as an upcoming project and would be interested in seeing it and learning from your experience. I am SoCal and am finishing a Fiat 124 Spider retromod resto.
Hi Michael. My car is in San Jose. I know of 2 x19 swaps in SoCal but I don’t know the car owners personally. Can try this FB group m.facebook.com/groups/2575480112697504/?ref=bookmarks Good luck with your build and don’t hesitate to reach or ask me whatever. Have done these now 3 times…
Partly. I used the subframe part of their kit with some modifications. Everything else I built custom/used alternative parts to the MWB kit. Great kit btw and I keep Matt up to speed on all of my modifications.
Very achievable numbers. I made 365 HP on a k20z1 with the same rotrex as this red x19 has. But plenty more to be had on that too. Are you turbocharging or supercharging? My dallara setup ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Rkv63_cnqo.html
@@fiatmonkey4012 ahhh, ok. Thanks. I saw a different video where you have a single wiper setup and was wondering if you did some kind of 'hidden' or recessed wiper setup to clean up the look. Very cool cars! Makes my '74 project look sad by comparison.
Ah yes. I did switch to a single 170 degree sweep wiper later. I used the center hole that was originally for one of the window washer tips, drilled it out some and installed a rear wiper motor from a mazda CX-5. It's almost complete, but I need to make some adjustments.
Didn’t cut into the rear boot at first however when I added a supercharger since, I added an air2water intercooler in the boot. I left it enclosed to help keep intercooler cool and still allow me to use the rear boot for storage. I did use a kit from www.Midwest-bay less.com. It consist of the engine cradle, axle rods (CV joints not included), shifter cables, shifter, engine/trans mounts.
The wheels are Advanti Storm S1 (Miata mazdaspeed version). www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda-Performance-Part/61-1387.html. Stock X with stock fenders, you are limited to 13, maybe 14. Anything bigger and you will likely need to roll the fender lip.
@@fiatmonkey4012 thank you for your quick reply and interest. The wheels on the car now it's 15" or 13/14 and what the tires size on each rim. Best regards, 💐💐
Can't remember where I found that music sorry. That's a Honda k series engine. It's a fairly straight forward engine/transmission swap (with some cutting/welding) and let's these little cars really show what they can do.
Awesome! I’ve followed your build thread on the red K20 car, just found this video of your new beast! I’m about to start a very similar build on my 1986 Bertone. I’m really torn: all-motor K24 or turbocharged K20/K24. Also 13’s vs 15’s. Would love to chat with you!
I just inherited an x 1/9 from my dad that just recently passed away, and I am looking at doing this swap as he already bought the k20 motor. Could you point me in the direction on getting info on completing this build?
@@fiatmonkey4012 thanks man! I’ll check it out, and I saw some things with them online and I’ll definitely check them out. I’ve seen a few receipts from them.
Sweet. Very nice engine bay prep, is that still a 1500cc Fiat unit with a twin carb manifold? I have a standard Gran Finale which I have owned from new bought 1989.
I *think* it's a 1500 head on it in this video, but not sure about the short block. I don't recall if it was non interference or not (usually means non-decked short block) with a pair of 40 DCNF Webers which IMO, are the best sounding NA setup you can do on the Lampredi and like Italian engines. May not go the fastest, but like Sean says in the video "Sound like you are going 100 MPH...!". 100% agree
@@fiatmonkey4012 I have a couple of twin choke 35 Dellortos on my 1300 Fulvia Zagato but the restoration project is not quite finished yet. Seems like when it is I need to have a look at the little Fiat. Both cars look fantastic.
Nice build.. needs some race tires for all that power and braking now. Thanks for the update. You have one of my favorite dallara swap built! Keep the videos coming! I did the Dodge Daytona 2.2 Turbo build in my yellow 74.
Just getting started on my 74 swap, what corbeau seats did you install? was thinking of getting the Forza seats. Do you like how they fit in the car? I will have a ton of questions for the farther I get along. Want to build mine just as you did.
Forza fixed back are the ones in the car. Its a tight fit and as with most aftermarket seats in the x19, you will have very little head room with top on. I removed the seat bottom foam padding and replaced with much thinner material that helped a ton.
