Brilliant book ludicrous amount of ads ,had to stop listening

Milligan describes a Major as having a face like a disassembled sink pump..... and oddly, i can picture that.

I was first introduced to Spike's humour when i was waiting with my sister, for my brother to come out of a Sootie show on Bournemouth pier. There was a book shop in the entrance to the pier (we couldn't afford to actually go on the pier). My sister picked up "Rommel" and was guffawing while reading it. It was late 70s, I'm ashamed to tell you my sister "lifted" the book and took it home where i read it once she'd finished it. I've since read and loved all these books ever since (i paid for them). Sorry Spike for the loss of revenue for that stolen book, but it was my sister's fault not mine lol

Listening to the Goon Show on the radio, the next day we would all do the one liners and accents of the funny bits. Just remembered that now! I read his book Adolf Hitler, my part in his downfall and remember a particularly funny part about the sergeant telling Milligan “you idiots, you’ve put the tent up inside out!” “That’s okay sarge, we’ll sleep on the outside!” 🤣

Far, far, far too many advert breaks to be able to listen to and enjoy this great mans work. Very frustrating as Spike was a great storyteller.

1972,in traction and well smashed after bike accident,a mate gave my this book,so painfull when laughing i could barely read a page b4 stopping for a rest!!!

I read these books at school. That was 40 years ago, I still howl with laughter reading them or listening.

I have all six books in paperback. And now i discover there's a seventh. He was a lunatic. He lived through a very harrowing experience especially in Italy, and STILL made it all sound funny. My favourite Milligam moment however is when he's being given a lifetimes achievement award, and the hosts are reading him a letter from then Prince Charles, and he refers to the Crown Prince as a Grovelling B*stard. ONLY Milligan, you never knew what he was going to say, but you could be certain it would be something no one else ever would.

Can anyone recall a story about a heavy lifting crane crashing to the beach from a cliff whilst lifting anti tank defences on the beach. I think it was Harry Secombe that sheepishly approached Spike on the beach and asked if he'd seen his crane. Spike asked "What colour was it?" I heard that story some years ago and it may have grown or deteriated over time but if it rings any bells with any fans I'd love to look it up. Maybe it was from his memoirs but I thought it was on the radio I'd heard it. Any fans recall??

Funny that Jewish guy Shapiro sending his money home to his mother to buy houses! Jews knew even then to buy property. AFAIK jewish POWs did not suffer the same fate as european civilian jews, after all we had their POWs if they killed ours
