In a recent(ish) biography, he was found to have regularly visited Toni for the duration of his life, staying with her on every occasion. His wives had no idea...
Superb, laughed and cried in almost equal measure. Seems even with two World wars in the 20th century the 21st century has lost a lot of humanity and pleasure.
Can anyone recall a story about a heavy lifting crane crashing to the beach from a cliff whilst lifting anti tank defences on the beach. I think it was Harry Secombe that sheepishly approached Spike on the beach and asked if he'd seen his crane. Spike asked "What colour was it?" I heard that story some years ago and it may have grown or deteriated over time but if it rings any bells with any fans I'd love to look it up. Maybe it was from his memoirs but I thought it was on the radio I'd heard it. Any fans recall??
A heavy gun fell off a cliff under recoil, narrowly missing Secombes tent. Spike appeared and said, " Anyone seen a gun?" Secombes replied," What colour is it?"
