I'm a Volvo 850 enthusiast, just trying to restore and maintain my two Volvo 850's.
These video's are for entertainment purposes only. They are not instructional videos. Obviously everyone's car is different and presents their own unique challenges. We all work on our own cars at our own risk.
If in doubt always consult your garage/ vehicle repair shop. I only work on my own cars and do not undertake work on other people's cars.
Excellent job mate👊 My mates just finished mine and it running/ pulling sweet. Burnt exhaust valves. Machine shop guy reckoned due to sticking lifters👍
@@martinmoran89 Thanks I can't tell you what connector its plugged into but Haynes manual hss wiring diagrams in the back of it that should. Also this ebay listing should give you an idea of the type of connection. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126502705230?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=cKpRf83jRNK&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=6CyPYYnfSlG&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Thanks man, I haven't had the pleasure of owning a C70 yet, it's very clever how Volvo used the same P80 platform for them. I know some C70 have the full Dolby surround system which I'd love to experience one day. Welcome onboard 👍
It is. I haven't had sny issues with it. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276123205399?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=3yMf4dkXRB2&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=6CyPYYnfSlG&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Jesus that's time consuming innit, can see why shops are expensive. I bought an aftermarket head gasket kit with the seals. Reckon aftermarket is good enough for this?
good effort on the turbo swap, been there myself.. although, your 'smoke' did just look like condensation from a cold motor warming up. You would expect a little oil like you found in the turbo inlet, pcv systems aren't perfect and the oil vapour will collect there.
Thanks. the old girl has been parked up for a year now. She could definitely do with a good run to blow off the cobwebs. Hopefully get her back on the road soon. 👍
Yeah I agree, not worth risking using old lifters. Will probably get new ones when funds allow. There seems to be someone in Germany selling after market lifters in 10s for competative prices though.
Will save this to watch properly, have oil burning issue to. Have spare head to either just swap, or fix current head, would be nice to keep engine org and do stem seals. Thanks for the video. Can you do one on a d5 head gasket!!!!
You have to watch out with alcohol and plastic. Sometimes a solvent, even one as mild as alcohol, can cause what's called 'environmental stress cracking'. I've hit the wrong piece of clear plastic before and watched it completely craze in a few seconds, with cracks propagating out from where I touched it with alcohol. Sometimes plastic piping develops cracks from the inside out from something as innocuous as water with antifreeze.
Ok doke. Some of that grime is really stubborn to remove though. That said I haven't seen any adverse effects develop on the fascia and it's been a good year since apying it. But I understand what your saying.
Were those pictures in your other video (Volvo 850 wooden door panel inserts) from an old (German) Volvo brochure? It looked like it said a dealer could fit out your volvo with wood 'in minutes'. Were they talking about the dash and console as well as the door cards? I can see popping out the masonite/leather door card and snapping in a wooden replacement in minutes, but I don't see how they could do a dash and console. The veneer on my 850 is coated with a thick clear finish, glued down, and then the black plastic around it is painted black. You can see where someone taped off the clear coated veneer and then painted black next to it, overlapping the junction between the black plastic dash and the wood veneer. I'm dying to figure out how to restore/replace that veneer on a dash/console. I've also seen veneer on the doors on the horizontal surface below the door card (on either side of the door handle pocket)
No, I've only just found this brochure/pictures. Yeah I think it just means the dealer can swap the wooden door card inserts. I've seen one guy restore his dash console before with great results by using a small orbital sanding pad on the clear coat/veneer. But never tried it myself..yet.
The wood trim amount just differentiates 850 and V70 and is one of the elements that pushed me towards the 850s little brother... 850 so damn serious and "grown up" with all these sharp corners and wood... made me feel like an OLD mothertrucker, you know? Let me be a silly clown in the V70 😛 Glad you persisted!
re-watched this... I realize i would have been scared shirtless if you told me to do this, and i would have used really foul language during my attempt at doing it. Mechanics are frigging Heroes, i tell you. Applause. Hat´s off to you.
And here is a good example why all car owners should pop the hood and spend some time looking around. These are complex machines , and our lives depend on them. Our lives, our GF´s, our Kids´ and our Dogs´... So look around, clean the engine bay, shine a flashlight in there and immediately note all things loose and whack, all wetness, drips...
Yes I used oil on parts previously and that evaporated. I will monitor the flywheel over the next few months to make sure that the lithium greese hasn't evaporated. 👍
worth noting, this will only do front toe not aligned to the vehicle center line. if you car is pulling, you need to do rear toe relative to center line.
had one of these. total waste of time. have a set of dunlop optical gauges that are ok. now i use a "bought" string kit with the mounting frames. welded up some 500mm x 500mm x 500mm square tables on wheels to sit car on from the 2 post (you could use some home made drive on ramps). can now do each wheel mm perfect and do a true 4 wheel toe alignment. you could just use a tape measure, even volvo will give the the mm difference at the tyres in the pocket data books\vida if you cant be ars.. to work it out.
Got to start somewhere old boy🤣 those dulop optical guages are kinda pricey. I did like the look of them though. I get what your saying though. There seems to be alot of different methods to choose from. But this is relatively easy to do nonetheless.
@@850BRICK if you just doing front toe, then use a tape measure, volvo pocket data gives the spec as 3.6mm difference between front and back meaurements to the center of the tyre. you can also take a meaurement to a center point on the car to center steering against the steering wheel.
@@850BRICK meyle or febi etc are ok, most aftermarket parts are ok these days, for brakes in normally go volvo pads just for noise\feel etc, cambelts either gen volvo or gates etc,
Loving these videos as its pretty much all the things i need to do to my v70 t5. Mine isn't remapped so only boosts to around 9 psi then suddenly drops off to around 4 psi. Does this sound like a faulty waste gate to you?
Could be but have you checked your recerculation valve? Sometimes the rubber diaphragm is torn. Or you could have a boost leak somewhere else, like on a rubber hose in the engine.
@@850BRICK I haven't. I need to get the right tools to do this really. Both of these items are cheap enough to buy. I can move the actuator arm with my hand. Should I be able to do this easily enough?
I cant say I have, but never say never. I did put a gasket on once before but the damn thing still leaked. I just put a thin layer of exhaust paste now 🤫👍
