Better if you remove the existing wall down to the studs and screw the clips into the studs. More cavity depth provides higher STC and less resonance at lower frequencies.
So, the TecSound - is that mass-loaded vinyl? Do you actually install the rockwool before putting up the first layer of drywall? What’s the total STC rating for this solution? How do you deal with all of the penetrations that need to happen through this sound treatment, like electric boxes for switches or receptacles, windows, air vents, etc…?
Tecsound is similar to Mass loaded Vinyl, it is PVC based. Yes the rockwool goes in the newly formed cavity behind the drywall. We supply acoustic socket boxes for penetrations, in single, double or triple. see link www.soundinsulationstore.co.uk/products/acoustic-socket-box-double?_pos=1&_sid=1c5ba88df&_ss=r&variant=48961241619
So, whats the total added thickness here? Also, could this be done on a brick wall where on the other side is our neighbour and which carries our staircases on our side of the wall… the staircases should be decoupled for best result, isn’t?
Question?? What is not clear is the level of sound. We are renovation a basement flat in a residential block and street. The basement was converted into an orthodontist in the early 80s until they closed in 2021. We are now turning back to residential. What level of sound would fail us? Very difficult for us as the flat above is nothing to do with us and have wooden footboards as it’s an old Victorian conversion into flats. Are we suppose to pay for the above flat to have sound proofing to their floors as well We are at all loss Btw thanks tor the upload
If it is going through planning as change of use from commercial to residential you are changing your property (not upstairs) so you will need to achieve building regulations part E for conversions. You may be able to achieve both the airborne and impact requirements from installing a good acoustic ceiling system. However you may need to discuss the neighbour installing an acoustic floor. This may not be acceptable to them, they could also refuse access to their flat to carry out a test. A discussion with your neighbours and your BCO is required!
Looks pretty good. I guess I found the solution for noisy neighbours! Thanks RU-vid. Quick question about sealing, does can it replace existing sealing, or it goes over it?
In general this would be to replace the existing ceiling as it is fixed to the joists. It can go under an existing ceiling, however you would need to consider the fixing used and the loading on the structure.
Hello, thanks for the video! how much does it isolate? If I build a musical studio in my house (maximum sound level 90 dB) is it enough? Thank you Edoardo
What gauge is the furring channel. I went to the store and they recommended 20ga dwc and it’s way too hard to bend to fit in a genie clip. Also it’s a solid metal vs the one showed in your video.
its as heavy as lead- mass loaded vinyl . it stops the low end bass travailing through walls you would need about a meter of rockwool to accomplish the same
