OK thank you for your recommendation on Bleak House - no I have never read it but I swear I am going to read Wuthering Heights based on your strong recommendations and so I can go back and listen to your videos - eventually HAHA. Yes, I grew up on the Albert Finney version of Christmas Carol also. I read Great Expectations when I was a kid and the only thing I remember about it was crazy Miss Havisham HAHA Thank you for the video - I enjoyed listening in while I prepare for work.

It's so hard to keep up with all I want to read! The good thing about Wuthering Heights is that it reads pretty quickly once you get into it. (I can't say the same for Bleak House!)

Thanks for presenting Elizabeth von Arnim. I had heard of her a couple of times, but so far haven't read anything written by her. You got me interested in 'Father'. On Jane Eyre (I first read it about 25 years ago): I just recently watched the 2011 film (by Fukunaga) together with my daughter and we loved it. I consider this the best film adaptation I've seen of that novel. Do you have a favorite film adaptation? On Wuthering Heights: I fully agree with you on the outstanding way nature is described. I love books where you can tell that the author really is a good and detailed observer of nature. You mentioned in your first video that you love Thomas Hardy, and I think he is also very good at this (also using a lot of symbolism, - e.g. birds).

I love the 2011 Jane Eyre. Visually, I think it is my favorite. I just watched the 1997 version yesterday and I found that Rochester to be an absolute narcissist, which I found interesting because I've never quite been able to reconcile their relationship in romantic terms and it got me thinking about the psychology behind their characters. I need to read more Hardy. I'm thinking Jude the Obscure will be next.

@@libbyreadsGood choice! Jude the Obscure has some heart-wrenching scenes, but I think it is a very convincing 'Bildungsroman' and a strong accusation of the elitist Victorian society that doesn't give a chance to Jude to work up his way into the circles of 'the learned and educated' ones. This is one of my two favorite Hardy novels (together with "The mayor of Casterbridge").

Hi Libby, JosephFrancisBurton brought me here, because we had some conversation on Wuthering Heights and he told me that you're doing a close reading project on this great novel. I think I'll start binge watching your WH videos right away 😂. I love your broad reading taste and intellectual curiosity. I'm glad you started a channel. I hope you'll find the booktube community as warm and welcoming as I did. Don't worry about the small number of subscribers, - it's hard in the beginning to get the attention of the almighty youtube algorithm. It just takes time and consistency. Best regards from Germany, - David.

Thank you! I'm finding it a lot of fun. Giving deeper thought to WH for the videos still has me thinking about the book every day. I appreciate the welcome!

I have been recommended Virginia Woolf, in particular her essays, so many times! I have just never gotten around to it. Those two Anne of Green Gables books, both the author biography and landscapes, look most interesting of the lot to me. I picked up a cheat paperback copy Wuthering Heights as promised, and am surprised at how short it is!

Virginia Woolf has a unique voice for sure. I prefer what she has to say about writing fiction to her actual fiction. Wuthering Heights reads very quickly, in my opinion!

I have never read Elizabeth Von Arnim, but Father sounds like a tragic comedy. I like it has a lot of ironic tragedy in it. I have my own theory about Heathcliff and who he may be, and my own theory about Wuthering Heights in general - but I think it's genius is that it has found the right balance of specificity and ambiguity to allow everyone to have a bit of a different theory about it. And I really like your idea that the virtuous people may not in fact be the good people after all HAHA. Thank you Libby, I really enjoyed your video discussion

Thank you. Yes, I would say Father is a bit of a tragic comedy. I was surprised at how modern the writing feels. I love, too, that Wuthering Heights can be so differently interpreted. It almost feels that she meant it that way and utilized the different narrators to that purpose.

Fact check: Cowan Bridge is the name of the school the Brontes attended. Cambridge is the University attended by Patrick Bronte.

Yeah, I read a lot of Jane Goodall when I was a kid and found it all fascinating - I think her major scientific contribution was to document how savage and warlike wild chimpanzees really are. I used to know a colleague of hers, a lady who worked with her in the 1960s, who had almost nothing good to say about her .. HAHA. I read Gone with the Wind about 40 years ago - so long ago I remember almost nothing about it. I was inspired to read it after the characters in the movie The Outsiders were reading it to pass the time while they were hiding from the Law. I remember enjoying it though. I thought the movie, at least the first half of the movie, is fantastic. Oh yeah, what is a Victorian novel without some good drama over a will HAHA. Yeah, I can’t say I have ever read Jane Austin, and I am not really inspired to try, but Thomas Hardy is great. I love the guy despite your love/hate relationship. Yeah, ruining good people’s lives is part of his charm HAHAHA. OOOHH I would love to hear your more in-depth thoughts on Tess … I am tempted to do a Thomas Hardy series after I finish my George Eliot series. I love Winter too, but glad to see Spring come. It just happens faster and faster every year. Thank you for the video.

I had forgotten they were reading that in The Outsiders! Yes, Thomas Hardy was very harsh with his characters, but he was definitely a realist. He must have been a ton of fun at parties!

Hello Libby, I appear to be your first subscriber. Sorry none of your dates are able to read very much - and I would go out with you and talk books but sorry I am happily married. Anyway, I love that edition of War and Peace you are holding up there - the end pages and cover are really neat looking. I have a tattered copy of the Maude translation on my shelf that has been daring me to read it for several years now .. HAHA, someday I promise. Yeah, I am not much for the hauls and TBRs either, but if you want a video idea, just pick up a favorite book and start telling us about it. Thank you for the video.
