The song was used to good effect in a 1976 film, Voyage of the Damned. In 1939, the SS St Louis sailed from Germany with a passenger manifest of Jews escaping brutal racist oppression under the antisemitic laws of Germany and Austria. Little did they know the ship had been allowed to sail for Havana so that the Nazis could make a cynical point: That no one wanted Jewish refugees. German agents bribed authorities in Havana not to allow it to land, and agents of the Zionist World Jewish Congress pressured the Roosevelt Administration not to let them disembark in the U.S.A., as those who didn't settle in Palestine had no use for the Zionists alive (dead, yes). I remember when Jews could be proud to be Jews; I'm sure the actors in the film considered it an honor to be part of it. My father didn't make it home from France, where his fighter plane went down in flames in 1944. He was mostly German-American. His mother always told me to be proud I'm German. if you watch for what the German crew say after Wien, mein Wien finishes, you'll hear something poignant. How do things come to such a sorry end when people are all alike everywhere? I've set it for where the song starts. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9lokt_5CVyY.html
Impresionante voz la de Sagi-Vela en su juventud. Un fiato increíble....el final es espectacular por la delicadeza del canto y la regulación de la voz. Unico!!!
I love Faure, nice singing, a little pitchy on the high notes, which is weird, and I dislike the “artsy” shifting images out the window. Perhaps they were meant to reflect the lyrics, perhaps not….I always look these things up, but the extended meaningless introduction lasting almost 2 minutes made me tired of the whole thing.
Haar bijnaam was madame dewolf.
Range, coloratura and trill all amazing but to be honest sustained upoer tones are often hooty or off key. Perhaps the ancient recordingis partly responsible
This piano music is unique for background purposes, but not only therefore! Why is this musiic forgotten and don't we never hear this music again? In stead of some horrible modern music.
